Location: Somewhere Wet and Worse
Time: Minutes Later
Isurface, gasp, and immediately try to stab him.
Pure reflex.
He catches my wrist.
Of course he does.
“Still angry,” he says. “Good to know.”
“You should have stayed out of this,” I snap.
“Funny,” he replies. “I was about to say the same to you.”
We make it to a half-sunk fishing skiff and drag ourselves aboard.
I’m soaked, bleeding, and furious.
“This wasn’t part of the plan,” I say.
“That convoy you were in?” he asks. “It was never going to protect you.”
“I know.”
He stares at me.
“You know?”
“Yes,” I say. “That’s why I let them take me.”
Silence.
Then: “You did what?”
“I needed to see who came for me,” I reply. “Now I know.”
“And?” he asks.
I look at him.
“They’re not trying to capture me.”
“They’re trying to kill me.”
His jaw tightens.
“What are you carrying, Mila?”
I don’t answer.
Instead I say, “You should walk away. Right now.”
He laughs once. No humor in it.
“Yeah,” he says. “That’s not how this works.”
I meet his eyes.
“You don’t understand what you just stepped into.”
He leans closer.
“Then start explaining.”
And whether I like it or not…
