Chapter 6 Second Place
Summer vacation was ending.
No matter how broken my parents were, they still had to think about my schooling.
If the incident had happened later—after I finished junior high—they might not have supported me continuing to high school.
But nine years of compulsory education? They had no choice.
My elementary school homeroom teacher heard about our family tragedy and came to visit, bringing two bags of fruit.
She gently brought up my studies.
"I understand how difficult this is for you. But no matter what, the child still at home matters too.
Nanfang did very well. She ranked second in the entire grade for the junior high entrance exam—and placed high in the district too.
My advice is to take her to register at City No.1 High School before the deadline passes. I have connections there. I can help put in a word."
My parents had been staring at the floor.
When they heard my ranking, their eyes lifted slightly.
"Second… place?"
Our elementary school was the best in the county. The top students could aim for City No.1 High.
The teacher nodded.
"Yes. To be honest… in the past, you've paid less attention to Nanfang's education. She bloomed late, but she has real talent. I've always believed she's someone worth nurturing.
Resources here are limited. If you invest in her, she could repay the family one day. And maybe… ease some of the regret. Right?"
He patted his knees and stood up.
"I've stayed too long. Think it over. Call me if you need anything."
My parents saw him out, half embarrassed, half grateful.
Then they leaned against the doorframe and fell silent.
After a long while, my father turned to me, voice heavy and worn.
"…Do you want to go?"
Of course I did.
I lowered my head and let my voice tremble.
"Dad, Mom… thank you."
