2. Izei #2
He lifted his hand and knocked against the heavy wooden door, and the sound seemed to echo through the forest silence.
Within seconds, the door opened slowly to reveal a lean man with sun-bronzed skin and green eyes.
This had to be Luka, the exiled Vael jaguar pride member Gerri had mentioned—the one who'd been protecting Freesia for three months while she carried the weight of preserving peace on her shoulders.
But it was the scent that hit him like a tidal wave. Orchids and rain and something utterly intoxicating that made his panther surge toward the surface with desperate recognition.
Mate.
The word blazed through his consciousness with terrifying certainty, but Izei forced his expression to remain neutral as the jaguar shifter stepped aside to allow him entry.
"You must be Izei Callel. I'm Luka," he said, though his hand remained positioned near the weapon at his side. "Come in."
The cottage interior was sparse but functional—furniture arranged to provide clear sightlines, weapons positioned within easy reach, and maps spread across a small table that suggested constant planning for movement. Everything spoke of people who lived knowing danger could arrive without warning.
Gerri Wilder stood near the far wall in one of her signature designer pantsuits, and her hair was perfectly styled despite spending the night in a safehouse. But her eyes held that knowing sparkle that suggested she was thoroughly pleased with herself.
And beside her stood the most breathtaking woman Izei had ever seen.
Queen Freesia Waverly commanded attention without demanding it, her athletic frame poised with the grace of someone trained for both leadership and combat.
Her thick dark hair was pulled back in a practical braid and revealed striking blue eyes that deepened to sapphire as she looked at him—eyes that carried centuries of royal bloodline and three months of devastating loss.
Even exhausted and dressed for survival rather than ceremony, she possessed an unmistakable regal quality that reminded everyone in her presence that they stood before royalty.
But when their gazes locked, her scent intensified until his panther was practically clawing to get closer to her.
The mate bond recognition was instant and overwhelming, a primal certainty that this woman belonged to him and he belonged to her with the same inevitability as breathing.
Her eyes widened slightly, the sapphire darkening to midnight blue as her tigress clearly recognized what his panther was screaming at him.
For a heartbeat, the professional mask slipped to reveal something raw and vulnerable before she pulled it back into place with impressive control.
"Well, hello Izei," Gerri said brightly, her voice carrying satisfaction that suggested this meeting was unfolding exactly as she'd planned.
"You're right on schedule. As you've probably gathered, this is Queen Freesia Waverly, and she's quite anxious to relocate today, so we should keep introductions brief. "
Izei remained precisely where he stood, knowing that stepping closer would make maintaining professional distance impossible. The mate bond was already pulling at him with magnetic intensity, and physical contact would activate something neither of them could afford right now.
Freesia's voice carried the authority of generations when she finally spoke. "Luka and I would like to relocate to the northern safehouse on the outskirts of Vael territory."
"Absolutely not." The words emerged with more Alpha command than Izei had intended, his panther's protective instincts overriding diplomatic consideration.
Taking his mate anywhere near territory controlled by the pride most likely responsible for destroying her family was unthinkable.
Her eyebrows rose with regal displeasure. "Excuse me?"
Izei forced his tone into something resembling reasonable negotiation rather than territorial demand. "What I mean is that my estate offers significantly better security than any safehouse. It would be strategically wise to go there instead."
She glanced toward Luka, who looked ready to voice his own objections to changing their carefully laid plans. "I'm not going anywhere without Luka."
The declaration shouldn't have surprised him—loyalty was clearly important to her, and the jaguar had kept her alive for three months. But his panther snarled at the idea of another male maintaining such close proximity to his mate, even though logic insisted Luka's protection had been invaluable.
"We'll extend our protection services to include Luka as well," Izei finally said.
"Thank you." Her relief was genuine, though wariness remained in those stunning eyes. "But we really must leave immediately."
Gerri practically beamed as she retrieved business cards from her purse with theatrical flourish. "Well, I think my transportation has just arrived. If you two ever find yourselves needing anything, please don't hesitate to reach out."
She pressed cards into both their hands before rushing toward the door with the efficiency of someone used to making dramatic exits.
Suddenly Izei found himself alone in the cottage's tense silence with his newly discovered mate and her protective jaguar companion.
Luka's unease was palpable, and Freesia's caution created an atmosphere thick with unspoken complications.
His panther was growing more possessive by the second, his protective instincts demanding he establish his claim and eliminate any potential threats to his mate's safety. But logic insisted that maintaining professional distance was the only way to navigate this impossible situation right now.
"I'll meet you at the SUV once you've gathered your belongings," he said, retreating toward the door before his control could slip further.
Outside, Gerri was already disappearing down the forest road in a sleek sedan, leaving him to process the magnitude of what had just occurred as he slid into the passenger seat beside Reth.
"So," Reth said, immediately noticing his Alpha's tension, "is she coming to our territory?"
"Yes, but she insisted on bringing the jaguar." Izei's voice sounded strained even to his own ears. "She wouldn't agree unless he was included."
"This is getting more complicated than we bargained for."
Reth's observation was an understatement of epic proportions, but before Izei could respond, the cottage door opened to reveal Freesia and Luka approaching with their minimal belongings—everything they owned apparently fitting into three small duffel bags.
"Yes, it really is," Izei said quietly, watching his mate walk toward him with unconscious grace. "Because Queen Freesia Waverly is my fated mate."
Reth's expression shifted to something approaching shock. "How is that possible? A panther and a tigress as fated mates?"
"I don't know, but there's no question about the recognition." Izei's panther purred with satisfaction at finally acknowledging the truth aloud. "She felt it too."
"Did you make physical contact?"
"No." The word came out rough. "I can't activate the mate bond right now. That would complicate everything beyond repair."
Reth studied him with the concern of someone who'd watched his Alpha navigate impossible situations for over a decade. "You'd better figure out how you're going to handle this."
The back doors finally opened, and Freesia and Luka settled into the back seat, their presence immediately filling the vehicle with tension and unspoken questions.
Izei stared straight ahead as Reth started the engine, his mind spinning through scenarios and contingencies while his panther demanded he turn around and claim what belonged to him.
For the first time since becoming Alpha thirteen years ago, Izei had absolutely no idea what he was going to do.
