12. Izei #2
The mate bond had been a steady presence all day, carrying hints of Freesia's emotional state like distant music.
But then the bond suddenly sharpened. Izei's head lifted from the blueprints, his panther stirring with recognition.
Through their connection, he felt her approaching—not just physically, but emotionally.
Whatever battle she'd been fighting in that guest room, she was emerging from it.
"What are you all doing in here?"
Her voice carried exhaustion and something raw around the edges, but it was steady.
Every head in the room turned toward the archway where Freesia stood, and Izei's chest tightened at the sight of her.
Dark circles shadowed her striking blue eyes, her hair was pulled back in a messy braid that suggested she'd been running her hands through it, and her clothes hung slightly loose on her frame.
She looked like she'd been crying for twenty-four hours straight.
She also looked like she'd fought her way through hell and emerged stronger.
Izei pushed back from the table, his protective instincts demanding he cross the room and pull her into his arms. Instead, he moved only a few steps closer, giving her space while positioning himself where she could see his support without feeling crowded.
"We were just working on some things," he said, his voice carefully neutral despite the relief flooding through him.
Her sapphire eyes swept the organized chaos of their makeshift operations center—maps marked with search zones, laptops displaying field reports, housing plans spread across surfaces, and five people who had clearly been working together with singular focus.
"What things?" The question held genuine curiosity rather than suspicion.
Luka straightened from where he'd been bent over a communication device. "Well, I was coordinating with Angus on gathering more intelligence on Cassian."
Kenia looked up from her tablet, where she'd been reviewing construction timelines and supply lists. "I was working on getting houses and spaces ready for your pride members. We have temporary housing available immediately, and construction teams standing by for permanent homes."
Reth gestured toward the stack of files and maps spread across the side table. "Aldric and I were gathering information on the remaining pride members—where they are, how to get them here safely, who might know the locations of others we haven't identified yet."
Aldric nodded from his chair, his weathered features carrying the quiet satisfaction of someone finally able to act rather than simply endure. "We've compiled detailed profiles on forty-three confirmed survivors and have leads on at least seven more."
Freesia stared at them all with something approaching awe, her gaze moving from person to person as if she were seeing them clearly for the first time.
The small satchel containing the Waverly Compact rested against her hip in its familiar position, but her hand wasn't clutching it with the desperate grip Izei had grown accustomed to seeing.
"You were working together to do this for me," she said slowly, her voice carrying wonder and disbelief. "To help me restore what I lost. To help me carry this responsibility."
The room fell silent except for the soft hum of electronics. Izei felt the weight of her realization through their bond—not just gratitude but something deeper. The understanding that she wasn't alone anymore.
"Yes, Freesia," Izei said, allowing his voice to carry the full depth of his commitment. "We're all working together for you. To give you the future you deserve. To help you not only protect the peace of this region, but to finally give you some peace too."
Her composure wavered, and for a moment Izei thought she might collapse—not from weakness, but from the overwhelming relief of finally having people who understood that her burden was worth sharing. Her free hand pressed against her chest as if she were trying to hold something precious in place.
"Thank you for doing all this," she whispered, then cleared her throat and spoke stronger. "I really don't have words to tell you how much this means to me."
"Have a seat," Izei said gently, gesturing toward the leather couch.
"Yes, come sit next to me." Luka patted the cushion beside him on the couch, his expression warm with the easy affection of someone who had watched her survive the impossible and was genuinely happy to see her engaging with hope again.
She moved across the room with careful steps, as if she were still testing whether this moment was real.
When she settled onto the couch beside Luka, Izei noticed that she kept the satchel positioned where she could feel its weight—still protective, still vigilant, but no longer desperately clutching it like a lifeline.
For several heartbeats, she simply stared at each of them in turn.
Through their bond, Izei felt her processing something he couldn't quite identify—not just the scope of what they'd accomplished in a single day, but something larger.
Something that felt like possibility taking shape in her mind.
Her blue eyes held a clarity that hadn't been there since learning about Mareth's betrayal, and beneath the exhaustion was a growing sense of determination that caused his panther to roar with satisfaction.
"There's something I want to tell you all," Freesia said, her voice gaining strength with each word. "I think I'm ready to finally share my story."
