16. Izei #2

"That's a map of Callel territory," he said, his voice deadly quiet. Cassian wasn't just planning to eliminate Freesia. He was preparing to attack the Callel pride directly. "They're planning an assault on my people. On our home."

Every protective instinct his panther possessed roared to life, demanding he shift and end the threat immediately.

The urge to tear through the estate's defenses and rip Cassian apart with his own claws was almost overwhelming.

But years of tactical training held him in check—rushing in without understanding the full scope of their enemy's plan would be suicide.

Information first, he reminded himself, forcing his breathing to remain steady. Then we make them pay.

Through the binoculars, he watched Cassian gesture toward different sections of the map while Mareth nodded in apparent agreement.

The sight of the treacherous tigress standing beside the jaguar Alpha filled him with cold rage—she'd helped orchestrate the massacre of Freesia's family, and now she was planning to destroy his.

Movement near the estate's front entrance caught his attention, and Izei shifted his focus to five figures emerging from the building. Panthers, not jaguars. But these weren't just any panthers. Recognition hit him like a sledgehammer to the chest.

"Those bastards," he growled, his voice carrying enough menace to make even Reth glance over in concern. "I know those five panthers. I exiled them from the Callel pride two years ago for trying to spread hatred about tigers and the Waverly Compact."

The memories flooded back—heated confrontations, demands that he reject the ancient treaty, poisonous rhetoric about panther superiority.

He'd given them multiple warnings before finally deciding their toxic influence posed too great a threat to his pride's unity.

Now, watching them walk on Cassian's estate grounds confirmed his worst suspicions about the scope of this conspiracy.

Freesia's sharp intake of breath drew his attention back to her. She was staring through her binoculars with an expression of shocked recognition, her face pale in the moonlight.

"Those two," she whispered, her voice trembling with barely contained emotion. "The ones with the facial scars. They were there the night my family was murdered. I'd recognize those scars and those eyes anywhere, even though they were in panther form."

The words hit Izei like a slap. Not only had Cassian recruited his exiled panthers, but they'd participated in the massacre that destroyed Freesia's world. The betrayal cut deeper than he'd imagined possible—members of his own species had helped orchestrate the attack that nearly broke his mate.

They'll pay for every drop of blood they spilled, his panther snarled. Every moment of pain they caused her.

But before he could voice his fury, the sound of rustling vegetation behind them made every shifter in their group freeze. Luka's head snapped around, his scout-trained senses immediately identifying the threat.

"We have company," he hissed, his hand already moving toward the knife at his belt.

Six jaguar shifters emerged from the jungle shadows, their movements coordinated and purposeful. These weren't patrol scouts—they were trained enforcers, and they'd clearly been tracking their group.

"Hey," the lead jaguar called out. "What are you doing here?"

Angus stepped forward slightly, his face a mask of calm determination. For a moment, Izei thought the Gamma might try to bluff their way out of the situation. Instead, Angus made a choice that would change everything.

"Run," he commanded, his voice carrying absolute authority. "Now."

Izei didn't hesitate. He grabbed Freesia's hand and pulled her toward the nearest escape route, trusting his allies to follow. But after only a few steps, Freesia dug in her heels, her tigress refusing to retreat.

"We can't keep running," she said, her sapphire eyes blazing with determination. "We need to fight."

Around them, the sound of shifting bones and tearing fabric filled the night air as Luka and Reth began their transformations. Izei met his mate's fierce gaze and saw his own resolve reflected there.

"Let's do this," he agreed, already feeling his panther pushing toward the surface.

The shift took him in a rush of sensation—bones elongating, muscles expanding, midnight-black fur erupting across his skin. Within seconds, his enormous panther stood where the man had been, his golden eyes fixed on the approaching jaguars with predatory focus.

Beside him, Freesia's transformation was equally swift and magnificent.

Her tigress emerged in a cascade of golden-orange fur marked by bold black stripes, her sapphire eyes blazing with royal fury.

Even in the heat of impending battle, Izei's panther felt a surge of pride at the sight of his fierce mate.

Luka's lean jaguar form positioned itself protectively near his brother, while Reth's massive charcoal-black panther created a wall of muscle and menace.

But it was Angus's transformation that carried the most weight—the moment his powerful jaguar emerged, he was making an irrevocable choice to stand with them against his own pride.

Then the battle erupted with explosive violence.

Izei and Freesia moved as one unit, their completed mate bond creating a synchronization that made them devastatingly effective. They took down three jaguars in a coordinated assault that showcased how naturally they fought together, their individual strengths complementing each other perfectly.

Luka's agile jaguar used speed and cunning to outmaneuver his opponent, while Reth's overwhelming power simply bulldozed through his challenger's defenses. Angus fought with grim determination, his jaguar's protective instincts now focused on defending his new allies rather than his former pride.

Within minutes, six jaguars lay dead in the moonlit grove, their human forms revealed in death. The cost of their reconnaissance mission had just escalated dramatically.

Angus stared down at the bodies of his former pride members, his naked human form trembling with the weight of what he'd just done. "I can't go back," he said quietly. "When Cassian sees my injuries, he'll demand answers. I won't survive the night."

Izei's bloodied human form stepped forward, still breathing hard from the fight but already thinking tactically. "You have a place with us, if you choose."

The look that passed between Angus and Luka carried years of complicated history, but Luka's expression was pure hope.

"Yes," Angus said firmly. "I renounce my position as Gamma of the Vael Pride. I stand with you now."

"Then we need to move," Freesia said urgently, already pulling on her tattered clothing. "Before more of Cassian's people come."

As they hastily dressed and prepared to flee through three miles of dangerous jungle, Izei felt the weight of everything they'd learned tonight. Cassian wasn't just planning to eliminate Freesia or the Waverly Compact—he was preparing for total war.

And now they had proof.

The real fight was just beginning.
