Lisbon, 314am
Afterparty — UEFA Women's Champions League Final
The party blurred into noise after midnight.
Music too loud. Champagne everywhere. Arsenal staff trying unsuccessfully to control players already emotionally destroyed from celebrating.
Lisbon glowed outside the rooftop venue while the Champions League trophy sat surrounded by teammates taking endless photos with it.
And somewhere in the middle of all the chaos—
Leah finally stopped moving.
Emotionally. Physically. Everything.
Because the adrenaline crash hit all at once.
One minute she'd been dancing with Beth and Katie screaming lyrics she didn't know.
The next—
she just needed Elle.
Leah found her near the quieter corner of the rooftop away from cameras and flashing lights.
The second Elle opened her arms, Leah practically collapsed into her lap without thinking.
Hopeless.
Absolutely hopeless.
"You okay?" Elle laughed softly, hands immediately wrapping around her waist instinctively.
Leah buried her face against her neck dramatically.
"No."
Interesting answer.
Very interesting.
Elle smiled softly while her arms tightened around her automatically, grounding her there against her chest while noise and celebration swirled around them.
And suddenly—
Leah felt it again.
Everything.
The mascot.
The ACL.
The captain.
The little girl inside her somehow surviving long enough to become this woman.
"I think I'm in shock," Leah admitted quietly against her shoulder.
Fair honestly.
Very fair.
Elle brushed slow fingers through the damp curls at the back of her neck while Leah stayed folded into her like she physically needed holding together.
And maybe she did.
"You know what I kept thinking during the trophy lift?" Leah murmured softly.
"What?"
"That I wish younger me could see this."
God.
That sentence.
Elle's chest physically tightened.
Because tonight wasn't just success for Leah.
It was healing.
Proof.
Survival.
"You became everything she dreamed about," Elle whispered softly.
Leah laughed weakly against her skin.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
Silence wrapped gently around them despite the chaos surrounding the party.
And honestly?
Neither noticed anyone else anymore.
Leah sat sideways fully curled into Elle's lap now, medal still hanging around her neck while Elle's arms stayed looped tightly around her waist.
Safe.
Possessive.
Home.
Someone from the Arsenal media team walked past.
Paused.
Then visibly melted.
"Oh that's disgusting," Katie yelled from across the room immediately. "Take the photo."
Traitorous behaviour honestly.
Leah didn't even move.
Too tired.
Too happy.
Too in love.
The flash went off once.
Black and white.
Leah sitting in Elle's lap with her head tucked against her shoulder while Elle wrapped both arms around her tightly from behind, smiling softly against Leah's hair.
Intimate.
Unguarded.
Real.
Neither thought much about it at the time.
Until Elle posted it at 4:02am from the hotel afterward.
My champion and a red heart.
And within minutes—
the internet completely exploded.
—
LEAH WILLIAMSON WON THE UWCL THEN IMMEDIATELY SAT IN HER GIRLFRIEND'S LAP ALL NIGHT I'M UNWELL.
The BODY LANGUAGE???
No because this is actual love.
Leah Williamson looking this soft after everything she's survived... I'm emotional.
THE WAY ELLE IS HOLDING HER ??
Football won tonight actually.
—
Then mainstream media picked it up the minute Leah shared it.
Sports pages.
Entertainment pages.
Lifestyle accounts.
Everyone suddenly obsessed with the image of Arsenal captain Leah Williamson — medal still around her neck — looking impossibly small and safe in the arms of the woman she loved.
And honestly?
People weren't reacting because it was glamorous.
They reacted because it was real.
No posing.
No performance.
Just exhaustion and relief and love after the biggest night of Leah's career.
Leah opened Instagram the next morning in the London hotel.
Immediately regretted it.
"Oh my God."
Elle looked up from the bed.
"What?"
"There are articles."
"About the football?"
Leah blinked once.
"No. Apparently about me being held like an emotional support animal."
Elle physically folded laughing.
"That's actually accurate."
Rude.
Very rude.
But unfortunately true.
Leah dropped backward dramatically against the pillows covering her face.
"I've accidentally become part of the lesbian internet."
"You say that like it's bad."
Leah peeked at her through her fingers.
"...fair."
Then softer—
"Do you know what's weird?"
Elle moved closer immediately.
"What?"
Leah looked toward the photo glowing on her phone screen.
Then quietly—
"I really don't hate being seen anymore."
Silence settled warmly between them.
Because that was the real thing underneath all of this.
Not headlines.
Not viral posts.
Healing.
Leah spent so long believing love needed to stay hidden to stay safe.
But this?
This photo wasn't exposure.
It was peace.
Elle leaned forward kissing her softly beneath morning London light.
And somewhere between Lisbon and London, between trophies and afterparties and finally allowing herself to be loved openly, Leah Williamson realised something life-changing:
the happiest moments of her life no longer belonged only to her.
Now they belonged to the people she chose to share them with too.
