Captain Again

England Camp, Switzerland — July 2025

The second tournament felt different.

That was the thing nobody warned Leah about.

The first Euros in 2022 had felt magical. Chaotic. Unexpected.

This one felt heavier.

Not because she doubted herself.

Because now everyone expected England to win again.

Including England.

Including her.

Leah stood alone near the balcony outside the team hotel in Zurich watching early morning light spill across the lake while the rest of camp slowly woke behind her.

Captain again.

Second consecutive Euros.

Still surreal honestly.

"You're awake offensively early."

Leah turned slightly at the sound of Beth's voice behind her.

"Couldn't sleep."

Beth walked beside her quietly, coffee already in hand.

"Nervous?"

Interesting question.

Because the answer should've been yes.

But somehow—

it wasn't nerves exactly.

"It feels different this time," Leah admitted softly.

Beth leaned against the railing beside her.

"Different good or different terrifying?"

"Both."

Fair.

Very fair.

Silence settled briefly between them while Switzerland glowed gold beneath soft morning sunlight.

Then Leah laughed quietly under her breath.

"You know what's mad?"

"What?"

"The first time..." Leah shook her head slightly. "I genuinely felt like I was trying to survive the tournament."

And she had been.

Pressure.

Media.

Responsibility.

Trying to prove she deserved to wear the armband after Steph.

Everything felt enormous back then.

Now?

Now she understood leadership differently.

Not perfection.

Presence.

Beth glanced sideways at her.

"You know everyone trusts you, right?"

The softness in her voice settled quietly between them.

Because maybe that was the biggest change of all.

In 2022 Leah constantly worried about whether she belonged as captain.

Now the team looked at her like she was home.

Leah smiled faintly to herself.

"I still feel twenty-five sometimes."

Beth snorted loudly.

"You literally lifted the Champions League six weeks ago."

"That feels fake still."

"You are deeply irritating."

Hopeless.

Absolutely hopeless.

But underneath the humour sat something real too.

Because Lisbon changed her.

Not ego-wise.

Emotionally.

Winning the Champions League with Arsenal healed some hidden broken thing inside Leah she hadn't fully understood before.

For the first time since the ACL—

football stopped feeling fragile.

And somehow that made room for everything else too.

Love.

Peace.

A future beyond surviving.

Then suddenly her phone buzzed.

Elle

Leah opened it instantly.

A photo.

Airport coffee. Sunglasses. Boarding pass barely visible.

And just like that—

the pressure in Leah's chest loosened slightly.

Beth noticed immediately.

"Oh that's disgusting."

"What?"

"You did the smile."

Leah looked deeply offended.

"There's no smile."

"There absolutely is."

Rude.

But unfortunately true.

Because Elle was flying in for England's opening match tomorrow.

Quick turnaround before Paris work meetings.

Then back again for knockout stages.

Ridiculous behaviour honestly.

And yet—

Leah loved her for it more than she could properly explain.

"You know what's weird?" Leah murmured softly after a moment.

"What?"

"I thought football was the biggest thing that would ever happen to me."

Beth looked at her carefully now.

"And?"

Leah glanced down at the message on her phone again before smiling faintly.

"Turns out life gets bigger."

The words settled warmly into the morning air.

Because maybe that was the truth now.

Football would always be part of her heartbeat.

Always.

But it no longer carried the entire weight of her happiness alone.

And standing on a hotel balcony in Switzerland preparing to captain England into another European Championship, Leah Williamson realised something quietly life-changing:

the strongest version of herself wasn't the one who carried everything alone anymore.
