Elias sat up.
His heart felt strong pumping in his chest, and when he looked down at his hands, his scars had faded to silver, barely visible. He was hungry, too. In a different way than before, and he knew at once what had happened.
When Elias closed his eyes and searched for the thread, it was gone. His head was quiet and it was awful.
Then he prayed again, for himself.
Elias dressed. He left his harness on the floor with his knives and his doll. He took the book and the papers from Victor’s coat and the protection of his name, freely given.
Then he walked out into the world, new.
