Chapter 37-The dinner that shouldnt have happened
Audrey's POV...
I blinked in surprise. How could it be... does it mean his father had a hand in the scandal? I looked at Jonathan, he was staring into the thin air. I knew he was anything but calm even though his face didn't show it.
I slowly reached out and intertwined my fingers with his. He blinked and turned to me.
I offered him a small and reassuring smile. "I'm sorry. I didn't know that if we dug further that we'd discover this. If I had known, I wouldn't have tried to get the clip. I'm..."
He put his index finger to my lips and shut me up. "Sshh. It's not your fault. If you hadn't done it, how would we know who was behind it?" He asked, looking deeply into my eyes.
I slowly bit my lips as I watched him. It seemed he was trying to keep it in. I didn't want him to think he was alone on this.
"If your father is behind all this..." I paused. His eyebrows tweaked when I mentioned his father. "Just know you're not in this alone. We're in this together," I nodded as I said that.
He smiled and nodded.
"So what are we going to do now?" I asked.
He let out a sigh. "He invited us for dinner tonight,"
My brows furrowed. "Dinner?"
He nodded. "Yeah. We might as well honour his invitation. If he's really behind this, then I most definitely want to know why"
"Will you be okay? I know how it feels to be betrayed by someone who claims to be your family" I said.
He touched my cheeks softly. "I'll be fine... as long as you're by my side," he added.
He turned and stared at the screen. His right eye twitched as he clenched his jaw.
What was his father up to now?
The tension in the room was suffocating. My eyes were wide and I thought I had heard wrong.
"Tell me about family," Jonathan's father repeated. "Specifically... your father,"
I stared at him with utter distaste. My heart was beating erratically in my chest. Why was he concerned about my father?
"From what I've read and heard about you," he shook his head. "You don't talk about your family. It seems like you're keeping it a secret. Why is that?" He asked as he looked intently at me.
I blinked in anger. What was he playing at now? I wasn't about to give in to his demands.
"That's because I want my privacy to be private," I said with gritted teeth.
"Hmm," he hummed. "Pity," I furrowed my brows. "I don't care about your privacy. I'm interested in that topic," he added.
I opened my mouth to reply him, when Jonathan cut in.
"You can't force her to talk about something she doesn't want to talk about,"
"Oh really," he feigned surprise and his expression turned cold as he looked at me. "Is it something you don't want to talk about or it's because it's a broken family"
I stood up abruptly when he said that, my nails digging into my palms. He chuckled at my reaction.
How dare he? I was fuming. Jonathan stood up as well. He held my hand so we could leave.
"You won't walk out on me, Jonathan. I'm your father," his voice rang through.
His mother who had been silent all along stood up and came towards us. "Jonathan, your father doesn't mean any harm,"
I looked at her in anger. What exactly did she mean by saying that he didn't mean any harm?
"Just sit down and hear what he has to say," she suddenly clutched her hands around my arm. "I'll go with Audrey so we can have some feminine time,"
Judging from the smile on her face and the enthusiasm to lead me away, I could tell she was up to something.
Without waiting for a response from him, she dragged me away from him and led me outside to the balcony.
"Wait here," she said as she let go of my hand. "I'll be back and don't think you can escape the same way you did with my offer," with that, she dahsed out.
I rolled my eyes and walked to the bench that laid there and sat down.
Just immediately, I saw a figure approaching. I thought it was her returning, but as the person came closer, I saw her face clearly.
Maya.
"You really waited," she smirked. "What a little obedient doggy,"
I scoffed in disbelief. I wasn't about to create a scene here. Besides, she probably still has the clip of what happened in the bathroom.
I didn't say a word to her, I just stood up from the bench and walked away.
"I gave up my betrothal for Jonathan's sake," she said behind me.
I stopped in my tracks.
"I forfeited my engagement because of him, and till today, my parents hate me for that," she added.
I slowly turned around. She wasn't facing me, she was looking down from the balcony.
"His mom suffered a terminal disease just so he could live, so you can't come into the picture and claim to know him whereas you know anything,"
My breath hitched when she mentioned his mother's disease. Was that the sacrifice Alexa mentioned?
