Chapter 49-Their take engagement exposed
Third person's POV...
Maya raised the contract In front of her, ready to snap it and just then... the door bolted open.
She threw the document on the table and pretended not to have been doing anything.
"I'm so sorry Miss Maya," the secretary said as she approached the table. "The board meeting has ended and Mr Ryder is very angry. I think the meeting didn't end on a good note,"
"What are you saying?"
"You'll have to go and come back another day. Mr Ryder is going home, so he can't see you,"
Tracy started arranging the table and gathered the contract file on the table.
She paused, then looked at Maya who was busy looking at Tracy as she made away with evidence she would have used against Audrey.
"My Ryder doesn't like people prying into his privacy or work life. He would be so mad if he had seen you going through his files. Even Ms Audrey doesn't do that" Tracy said.
Maya was taken aback. Did she just compare Audrey with her?
"It's nothing to you. Don't try to get careless with your words," Maya scoffed as she stood up. "I can get Jonathan to fire you,"
Tracy immediately lowered her head. "I'm so sorry ma'am,"
She gathered the rest of the documents and opened the first drawer and put it inside and turned around to go.
Maya delayed so she could grab the contract.
"Ma'am," Tracy called her. "You have to go. I need to ensure no one is here before I go to meet him,"
"Just go," Maya said. "I'll leave when I feel like it,"
Tracy shook her head. "Please don't make my job more difficult than it should be. You can call him later and talk things. But for now..." she gestured to the door. "You should go,"
Maya gritted her teeth and clenched her jaw. She picked her bag angrily and stormed towards Tracy.
"You'll regret speaking to me in such a manner," she pointed at Tracy before brushing her shoulders against Tracy's and walked away.
Jonathan's POV...
I shut the door with a bang. I had just arrived home and was fuming, my hands were clenched.
I walked inside and looked forward. Audrey was standing at the foot of the stairs. She was holding a blush pink mug and had already changed out of her clothes.
I needed some peace and I found it in her presence. I walked to her, my suit jacket in my hand. I moved towards her and leaned in to kiss her, but she turned away to the right.
I turned to the other side to kiss her again, still, she turned to the left.
"What did I do now?" I asked.
"What did you not do?" She asked and held the mug with both hands as she took a sip.
I sighed. My eyes were heavy and I was on edge, but I wasn't about to snap at her.
She must have noticed my situation.
"Why didn't you call me to tell me that you cancelled plans?" She asked. Her voice was softer this time.
"What?" I murmured.
"I stayed for hours waiting for you to come pick me like you said... but you didn't show up. I knew you didn't forget our plans, you must have cancelled it,"
"So why didn't you tell me?" She bit her lips as she looked at me. "If it wasn't convenient for you to call me, you could have at least just texted me and not have me wait,"
"I sent you a message," I said.
She shook her head. "You didn't"
"No. I'm sure I did. I had extra work and an impromptu board meeting. I knew I wouldn't make it... so I messaged you,"
She looked at me for a minute, trying to decipher if I was telling the truth. She left the stairs and headed for the center table.
She gently placed the mug on the table and grabbed her phone.
"Where's the message?" She asked as she flashed her phone screen in front of me. The last message there was the one from days before.
"How come?" I muttered and dropped my briefcase on the couch. I brought out my phone and checked my messages.
"Oh no," my voice dropped.
"Do you still claim that you sent it?" She asked and gave me a knowing look.
"No. I..."
She didn't wait for me to finish speaking before walking away.
I quickly went after her and grabbed her wrist.
"Let me go," she protested as she glared at me.
"I'm sorry," I sighed. My head was pounding. I had a headache.
"You're sorry? You forgot to call me to tell me that you cancelled and you stood me up. I had other plans too... but I had to cancel them just to spend time with you,"
"I understand you had an important meeting," she continued. "But I had important things too. It just shows that you love your work more than..."
"I'm sorry honey," I blurted out. I didn't want her to finish that line, because it wasn't true.
I was beginning to feel irritated, not at her though. I needed to rest and think of how to handle the stakeholders.
She looked at me, a blush creeping up her cheeks.
"What did you call me?" She asked as she lowered her gaze.
I gently held her hands. "Honey, I'm sorry. I don't love my work more than you. You're more important and I did send the message..."
She frowned and opened her mouth to speak.
"I sent it to Maya," I announced.
She leaned by the stair railing. "I don't understand,"
I showed her my phone. Her eyes widened slowly.
"I must have sent her the message unknowingly, probably because I saw a message of hers and then sent it to her,"
"Let's not think much of it. Just delete it," she simply said.
I nodded, my shoulders aching badly.
"You look tired and stressed. Rough day?" She asked as she touched my face softly.
I sulked like a baby and nodded again.
"Come," she held my hand and led me upstairs. "I'll give you a good massage,"
"In your room?" I asked as I followed her.
"Is anything wrong with that?" She raised a brow at me and I shook my head.
"Good. Then after that, you'll tell me why you banged the door so hard and nearly brought this house down,"
"Wait," I stopped walking and she turned to look at me. "You still owe me a kiss,"
She squeezed her lips, looking at me. Then she leaned in and gave me a peck.
"I said a kiss and not a peck," I complained.
"They're all the same thing. What matters is that my lips touched yours,"
I sulked and feigned sadness as I looked down. She sighed in defeat and lifted my head with her finger and pressed her lips to mine. That action alone made the headache disappear.
She broke from the kiss slowly. "Happy now?" She asked and I smiled as I nodded.
"You have something on your hair," I said and reached for her hair. She brought her hair forward so I would remove whatever was there.
I took advantage of that situation. I moved towards her slowly and she moved back a bit. I placed both hands on the rails, trapping her between my body and the stairs.
"What are you doing?" She asked surprised. I didn't respond. A smile was playing on my lips.
"I'll show you," I said and lowered my head to kiss her.
She was quick to put her index finger on my lips. "But I already kissed you," she argued.
"Just a little more," I pleaded and removed her hands from my lips.
"I thought you said you were tired?" She looked me with her brows raised. "But you want to kiss me?"
I just chuckled as I leaned down and before my lips met hers, she closed her eyes, waiting for me to kiss her.
I closed my eyes too as my lips met hers.
There on the stairs, my hands on the railings, with her trapped in between, our lips moved in sync.
Being with her felt like home. My anger and the frustration from work had disappeared. She was the therapy I would always love to come home to.
The next morning...
My phone buzzed on the table. I stirred in my sleep as I opened my eyes slowly. The sunlight had begun peeking into the room.
Audrey was next to me on the bed. Her hair fell across her face as she breathed softly in her sleep.
I ended up sleeping in her room last night after she gave me the massage of my life. She was good at it.
I supported myself on my hand as I watched her sleep.
"Who would have known that one day I will fall so hard for this beautiful supermodel?" I asked rhetorically.
My phone buzzed again. I turned around to get it.
The first headline that caught my eyes nearly made me shout.
'Jonathan Ryder and Audrey Willows fooled the public with their fake engagement'
Oh oh. This isn't good. What's going to happen next?
Find out in the next chapter. Keep supporting their love else... I don't know. Maybe they'll break up.
Hahaha ??????. Just kidding... Or maybe I'm not.
