Chapter 2

“Everything else is water.” Why does that line mean so much to you?

So, this is what happened.

Two weeks before I finished this book, my boyfriend and I were driving and he was stressed beyond belief.

Just, you know, one of those life periods where you want to pull your hair out and scream.

I’d learned so much over the years through therapy, and affirmations, mindset switches – all of it – how to calm my nerves and just breathe.

Breathing always felt like floating; light as a feather.

And the only time humans can float like that, is in water.

I looked at him, put a hand over his and said: “Worry when it happens. Control what you can control. And everything else, everything else is water, baby.”

And he breathed. In and out, alongside me.

And then, he smiled. “Everything is just water.”

See, life happens to everyone. A storm will rock your boat, a tide will trip you up, and you’re going to want to throw yourself overboard because why the hell is the journey taking forever?

But if you can’t calm your mind, you might as well drown.

And water can be a beautiful place to float, or a nasty place to sink.

I don’t know why those words tumbled out of my mouth when they did. But they never left my mind. And I hope in the dark moments, when the hurricanes strike, you’re able to look beyond the horizon and turn the tide.
