Chapter 42 Kairi Sanchez-Moore

CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

KAIRI SANCHEZ-MOORE

In my heart, I knew it the moment those men entered my house without setting off the alarm that someone had sent them. Did I know it was Trini? Not until she suddenly appeared in my bedroom.

I heard a noise and assumed it was Makari, who might have forgotten something, until I heard other voices and realized it wasn’t him. By the time I ran back for my phone, they caught me. It wasn’t until they were demanding that I call my husband that I knew they were trying to lure him into a trap.

Even without asking, I knew Trini had sent them, but I was just thankful that she changed her mind and helped me. I couldn’t ask for any more than that.

Makari was standing there just looking at her. My brother was upstairs too now, while the rest of the crew started to take care of the bodies we left.

The smell of blood mixed with gunpowder was making my stomach turn. As I looked behind me, I saw one of the bodies instantly transporting that moment of fear back into my body. I shuddered, closed my eyes and took a few deep breathes.

Makari was looking at me, and then he moved his eyes Trini’s way. I noticed the moment his face switched, letting me know that he knew the truth.

“How the fuck those niggas even knew I wasn’t here to come here?” he asked while still looking at Trini.

Shakur then turned to look at her too. The anger rising, showing in his face.

“I-I—” Trini stuttered.

“Did you set my wife up?!” Havoc barked at her.

Trini’s face dropped, and the color drained. Her eyes widened, and tears sparkled in them. I watched as she struggled to breathe, swallowing hard. Even Shakur turned his fury her way.

“The fuck did you do, Trini?” my brother asked.

“I didn’t—” she started and stopped.

“SO, HOW THE FUCK DID THEY GET IN MY HOUSE?” Makari gritted.

“It was me,” I interrupted in a panic.

That made them look at me.

“What was you?” Makari questioned, frowning at me.

“I, uh, I asked Trini to lure them here and get you out of the house,” I lied. Her eyes widened a little as she looked at me.

“The fuck would you do something stupid like that?!” Makari barked.

“I knew they were after you, and I was trying to help,” I said.

He groaned and dragged a hand down his face.

“It isn’t your place to try to protect me, Kairi. That shit was reckless as fuck! What if something went wrong!” he yelled at me.

I grabbed his hand and looked him in the eyes.

“I was just trying to help,” I let him know. He gave me a weird ass look and shook his head at me.

“Havoc, the clean-up crew is here,” Oblique came upstairs and announced.

I looked over at Trini, still in disbelief that we’d killed eleven men together.

Since Makari trained me how to use a gun, this was the first time I’d ever actually used one to kill someone.

All that he taught me stuck with me as fight mode kicked in.

But now the dust had settled, my nerves were getting the best of me.

“Y’all go into this room, let me deal with this,” Makari said, pointing to the guest room he’d been staying in. That was the only room untouched by the madness that had just happened in our house. My eyes landed on the bullet holes in the hall, and my stomach sank.

“Go with her, Trini,” he instructed. I welcomed that because right now, I just didn’t want to be alone.

Just as she stepped around him to follow me, Makari grabbed her by the arm and looked in her face. He didn’t say a word, just stared at her with the most murderous look in his eyes before he let her go.

I noticed the way her shoulders dropped.

He then gave me a final look before disappearing downstairs with Shakur and Oblique. I looked at Trini, and she looked shaken. I led her into the room and closed the door behind us.

She looked around the room and then took a seat.

Her breathing was shaky, and she shook her head.

“Why did you do that?” she asked. I sighed.

“I know what happened, Trini,” I let her know. Her eyes popped open, and her shoulders slumped.

“But I’m just glad that you changed your mind,” I let her know. She sat there staring at me for a few seconds.

“Sony told me that he just wanted you and it would be over. I will admit I allowed my anger to go along with it,” she said something that I could understand. It wasn’t that I didn’t understand their anger, I just wanted them to know it wasn’t my intention to hurt Hell at all.

“He used me to try get to Havoc. I’m sorry,” she said, dropping her head.

I just stood there looking at her, part of me understanding her and the other part struggling. She said she was Makari’s best friend, yet she would lead men to his house to hurt us.

What if he hadn’t taught me to shoot?

I swallowed a breath and continued to look at her.

“That’s what Sony does. He lies and uses people,” I said, finding one thing to sympathize with.

Trini lifted her head to look at me.

“He had been coming to my job harassing me,” I spoke, voice shaking. I had to pause to control my breathing. Just talking about it again was bringing back painful memories.

“I just wanted him to leave me alone, and so I made a bad decision,” I rubbed my arms, guilt eating away at me.

“But I swear I had no idea the drink had been given to Hell. I just assumed Sony put it down or something,” I explained what I’d been trying to tell Makari for the longest.

She looked at me.

“If I had known what would happen, I never would have done it. God knows how much I wish I could take it all back,” I confessed and sniveled.

I knew part of her decision to lead those men here was because she believed I killed Hell purposely. Makari had already explained about how it was only the three of them for the longest, so I knew she was hurting too behind his loss.

Trini just continued to sit there looking at me, and then she looked down at her feet.

“I’m sorry I let my anger take over for a moment.”

I paused. My mind telling me to pull away from her because she had the potential to hurt me, but at the same time, she could have left and didn’t.

I was grateful that Makari thought to teach me how to handle a gun, but Trini’s life was at risk too. They could have killed her as well.

“Thank you for coming back,” I let her know.

She made a mistake, but she had the chance to escape, since we didn’t even know that she was there until she killed the first two. However, Trini chose to stay and help me. That was all I cared about.

“Truce?” I offered with my hand out. She lifted her head to look at me and then smiled.

She then stood to her feet and shook my hand.

“Truce.”

And finally, we saw eye to eye!
