Chapter Eighty

Alan

Me: I just wanted to let you know I have to head to Lancastle for a few days. But I’ll be back on Thursday.

Jessica: Who is this?

Me: Ha ha.

Jessica: How did you get my number?

Me: Well, given what you’ve learned about me recently, I think you can figure it out.

Jessica: Isn’t that illegal?

Me: Patriot Act.

Jessica: When do you leave?

Me: Tomorrow morning. Why? Do you want to have dinner?

I mean, it didn’t hurt to ask.

You could have knocked me over with a feather when she replied.

Jessica: Okay.

Me: Okay?

Now I was suspicious.

Jessica: I have to give you something.

Fuck.

I had a feeling I knew what it was.

Me: I can bring Chinese over.

Jessica: We’ll come to you.

Me: We? You’re bringing Ruthie?

Jessica: Is that okay?

Me: Yeah, more than okay. What time? Should I get you Orange Chicken?

Jessica: You remembered.

Me: I remember everything about you, Jess.

If she was about to serve me with divorce papers, I wasn’t going to make it easy for her.

Jessica: How about 6?

Me: See you then, babe.

Yeah, I called her babe.

No, I didn’t care that I wasn’t supposed to.
