Chapter 29

Theodore

“I’m an idiot,” I say solemnly, and Devon turns to me with a raised eyebrow.

“I mean, I’m sure you’re right, but why?” he chuckles.

I sit up straight on my bed and let my legs swing over it so that I’m sitting on its edge and facing him.

“You win,” I sigh.

“Come again?”

“I kissed her, Dev. Twice. Both times were spectacular,” I admit, eyes on the navy-blue carpet of our room. “And we are now … together.”

“I cannot contain my shock. I would have never seen it coming.”

When I look up at him, the arsehole is smiling.

“Are you going to say anything else or let me wallow forever?” I groan.

“Theo,” he laughs, slapping my knee. “I don’t give a shite about the bet. I mean, I knew I’d win, and don’t get me wrong, you’ll never live it down, but I’m happy for you, man. It was time you got your head out of your arse.”

“I don’t know how you’re so calm about this. Don’t you understand the implications?”

Devon extends a hand to place on my shoulder.

“All I understand is you’ve got something that can make you happy, now. Something that you don’t have to lose sleep over. Something good.”

“Yeah, and I’m also a hypocrite,” I shake my head.

“Because of the bet? It was just us being dickheads, alright? It won’t be a prob–”

“Yes, it will be a problem!” I stand from the bed, my hands clenching into fists. “She told me just how badly she despises being lied to, Devon. I should have never let you convince me.”

“Oh,” he drawls. “So now it’s my fault? Honestly, Theo–”

“You just couldn’t let it go, could you?”

“You’re a grown arse man, you can make your own decisions.”

“And you’re my best friend, and you’re supposed to look after me and stop me from making terrible decisions, not encourage me,” I snap.

“What’s so terrible about having fallen in love?!”

“That’s the point!” I throw my arms in the air. “Do you even care about Dafne? Or does this whole thing not bother you because you’ve gotten Oliver out of it? I’m starting to think that was part of the plan all along,” I say bitterly. The Devon I know doesn’t do things for his own gain, but I’m so frustrated I can’t leave any possibility out. I need to calm down.

Breathe, Theo.

“Wow,” Devon huffs. “You’ve lost your mind for good, haven’t you? You know what–fuck this, Theo, I’m out of here,” he grabs his jacket and keys and storms out of our dorm room.
