Chapter 27 #3
I quickly double checked the number on my phone and reaffirmed I’d called Anna. “Kane, why do you have Anna’s phone?” I asked in a terrified tone.
“Well, since you wouldn’t talk to me on yours, I had to get creative, babe,” the disgusting man jested. “Figured you wouldn’t listen to reason. That you’d only listen to brute force. And I was right.”
My voice trembled as I asked, “Where’s Anna?”
“Don’t worry about Anna, Cat. She’s fine—for the moment. I’m not sure how long that will be if you do something stupid like hang-up on me or contact your ape boyfriend about this.”
“What do you want?” I demanded, my gut twisting painfully when I thought of how scared Anna must be right now, how alone she must feel.
“I want an unfiltered conversation with my girl,” the arrogant man stated. “Is that so wrong?”
“Your girl? I’m not your girl, Kane. I’m with Ace.” I tried to eradicate the rancor from my words when I spoke, but I failed miserably. “Ace and I mated last night, Kane. My scent changed and everything,” I embarrassingly added, hoping it would make the man give up this stupid quest to be my mate.
The line sparked and Kane emitted a low growl. “You’re mine, Omega! I don’t care what you smell like or who’s been inside of you. You will always be mine! And if you don’t come to terms with that soon, I’m just going to have to take my frustration out on your vulnerable, human friend.”
“No!” I shouted, hating him with every fiber of my being as I imagined all the terrible things he could do to Anna.
“I’m not the only one who will enjoy her sweet, human flesh, either. There are more than a few wares in the club who are already fond of my captive mouse. One in particular has been enamored with her since they met. Love at first bite, you might call it,” he drawled with a humorless chuckle.
My stomach twisted in disgust. He’d bitten her? Oh God! Why? “Don’t hurt her, Kane. Anna isn’t even a part of this. She’s human. She doesn’t deserve to be caught up in ware politics.”
Kane’s laughter sharply died off then. “I don’t care about Anna or any other human. I’ll do whatever it takes to get you in my bed, Cat. You’re going to be the mother of my children one day. There’s no number of humans I wouldn’t sacrifice to get to you.”
Lord help me, but I believed him. Anna’s life was in my hands, and I was afraid I wasn’t going to be able to convince this sociopath to spare her before it was too late.
“What are your demands?” I asked, needing him to keep talking. He couldn’t hurt Anna if he was tied up on the phone with me.
“That’s better,” Kane praised, practically gleeful now that I was playing along just how he liked.
“I want you in my bed by the end of the day. If you aren’t here by midnight tonight, I’m going to give our little, trapped mouse to my very eager brother.
And you don’t want that, Cat, I promise you. Do you know what a wendigo is?”
I shook my head, though he couldn’t see that visual gesture. “No,” I added once I swallowed enough spit down my throat to unstick my suddenly dry vocal cords.
“A wendigo enjoys nothing more than to strip humans of their delicate flesh and feast on their organs. The more he eats, the more he wants, the more he hungers for it. The only thing left when they’re done are the bones.
They’re ravenous beasts that get off on the torture and terror of their prey before they finally deliver the overdue death blow.
My brother has been one his whole life, but I’ve never seen him so interested in a woman as he is in Anna.
He’s fucking obsessed, Cat. Just remember, the longer you take to get here, the more time he has alone with her. ”
I was going to throw up. Fighting the urge to run to the bathroom and alert Ringo something was wrong, I sat stiffly on the edge of the bed. “Don’t let that animal near her, Kane. I’m begging you,” I whispered, too distraught to think clearly.
“Whether I do or don’t do has everything to do with you, Kitty Cat. Are you going to be a good girl and do what Daddy says? Or are you going to be a mouthy little bitch who thinks she can defy me over and over again?” Kane hissed with ugly, unspent rage.
“I’m being watched by a prospect,” I admitted, trying to buy myself some time to think. “I can’t exactly give him the slip. He’s twice my size and ten times my strength.”
“You’re a smart girl, Cat. Figure it out. I’ll text you the location where I want you to show up. Don’t disappoint me, or Anna, by making the wrong choice.”
“I’ll be there,” I told him, and I would. I couldn’t leave Anna to face these demons on her own. This was my problem. My fight. Nobody else should be dragged into this mess.
“I’m glad to hear that,” Kane purred with so much satisfaction I could practically feel the hum of it over the phone line.
“How long?” I asked then, needing to hear the complete deal laid out in plain terms so I’d know what I was getting myself into. “How long do I have to stay with you?”
“What do the humans say?” Kane mused, reveling over his sudden reversal of fortune, “Until death do us part, Cat. Until death do us part.”
