Chapter 22

POV: Kiera?

It’s been a week since I’ve seen Cain.

It was Saturday morning.

And usually on Saturday mornings, I woke up next to him, safe in his grasp, and when Cain finally rolled around in the morning, he’d press me further against him and bury his face in my hair, almost inhaling my scent, oddly enough, and then he’d whisper in my ear, “good morning,” in the most intoxicating, overly perfect voice that made my want to stay in the bed for the rest of the day.

But this Saturday felt different. Instead of feeling him beside me, all I could do was wish he were there.

Because every fiber of me ached for him—needed him—as if he were a part of me, as if I was meant to be in his arms at this very moment.

Yet, he was still far away and not beside me.

Lately, things were getting…intense between us.

When he gave me a key to his penthouse, he sent movers to my house the next day and I moved in almost immediately, while he was out of town on business.

I stared down at my phone screen, bundling myself further in a blanket as the sound of the television hummed in the distance.

Cain: I haven’t been able to sleep in a week.

Kiera: You should try some melatonin.

Cain: Melatonin won’t help.

Kiera: And why’s that?

I smiled down at the screen.

I knew why.

Cain: Because I can’t sleep since you’re not next to me.

I wasn’t sure why or how Cain fell for me, but I knew I fell for him hard. And hard meant like earth shattering. Because some part of me, deep inside of me, called for him.

Kiera: That line is impossibly cheesy.

Cain: Yet, you love it.

Kiera: Who says I love it?

Cain: Me.

Kiera: And you think you’re always, right, don’t you Mr. Naughton?

Cain: I know it, Ms. Sorens.

Cain: What are you wearing, right now? God, I can’t imagine what you look like in my bed—in our bed.

Kiera: Seriously?

I couldn’t help but laugh.

That’s what he was thinking about after not seeing me for a week? Of course, I guess I shouldn’t expect anything less from Cain, he was a horn dog after all.

Cain: Tell me you miss me, at least.

I rolled my eyes and tossed my phone onto the couch.

He knew where I was, after all. In our penthouse like he liked to call it.

He could wait a little. I knew that would drive him crazy if I did.

I walked past the kitchen, on the way to the bathroom, and rifled through a plastic shopping bag. Shower gel. Mascara. Tampons. A pregnancy test.

I was a week late on my period and I was checking everyday to see if I’d get it. I felt warmth in my underwear, and hoped that today would be the day I got my period.

But as I made it to the bathroom, yanked down my pajama pants along with my underwear and glanced down…….there wasn’t blood.

Shit.

I’ve never had a pregnancy scare before.

And I sure as shit, didn’t need one now.

Not when I was sleeping with my boss. Not when he was away weeks at time and most certainly didn’t want a baby. Not when he was sort of possessive and controlling and had other secrets… confusing secrets, secrets that just seemed and felt..strange?

Maybe I shouldn’t take the test? Maybe I’ll get my period tomorrow? Maybe I should just sit and relax today, boil some hot water, drink tea, take a bath, eat a pizza—-do anything but take a pregnancy test.

This was fucking terrifying.

But I knew I had to do it. I had to see if I was actually pregnant.

I pulled up my underwear and pants and ran back to the kitchen and quickly grabbed the pregnancy test then headed back to the bathroom.

My hands shook as I held the flimsy box in hand, reading the directions like a crazy woman and tearing open the packaging and clutching the plastic test in hand as if it was my lifeline.

And I guess it was in a way.

Because it held my future.

I placed the stick between my legs, hovering it over the toilet then peed on it.

I peed as if my life depended on it.

Then I placed the stick down and waited.

And that’s when my mind really began to spiral.

Oh, Kiera, what the fuck is wrong with you? You’ve been sleeping with your boss, again, and letting him cum inside of you almost everyday and not taking your pill regularly—what did you think was going to happen? That’s literally the recipe to getting pregnant! You’re delusional, you truly are, to think that this wasn’t going to happen.

And my mind only went darker.

What are you going to do if you are pregnant? You can’t possibly keep this baby. Yet I can’t see myself actually getting an abortion. What would you tell Cain? How would tell Cain?

I glanced over at the stick then forced my eyes closed and took a long deep breath.

And as I let myself drift, soothing thoughts slowly began to weave their way through my mind.

What if Cain wanted a baby? What if he would be a good father? What if this would make us…a family? What if this was meant to happen?

I shook my head, chalking it up to delusions.

I was imagining a perfect response. I wanted to imagine one.

C’mon Kiera, it’s now or never. You have to look at the results.

My hand shook as I reached for the test and slowly forced myself to look at it.

Two lines.

Pregnant.

No, no, no.

I ripped open the second stick in the box and peed on it.

I waited for what felt like hours—hoping—praying that the first test was wrong before glancing down at the second stick.

Two lines.

Pregnant.

Two tests can’t be wrong, can they? Maybe I could try a different brand, wait longer, go to a doctor? Because there’s no way that I was pregnant.

But I knew the truth.

I was delusional.

Because in all honesty, it was believable that I was pregnant. I let him cum inside of me. We had sex daily and it was almost as if my body….wanted this?

No way. There’s no possibility that my body wanted this. Pregnancy wasn’t a kink to me.

But deep inside for some reason I felt…calm after I saw the result.

Everything inside me screamed for Cain now, as my body belonged to him.

I clutched the tests in hand, staring down at them.

This would alter my future. This baby would change my life.

The sound of the door unlocking echoed through the hall, causing my body to jolt on the toilet.

Cain was home.

“Baby!” I heard him call out.

I dropped the pregnancy stick to the clean marble floor and the sound echoed throughout the bathroom.

I quickly grabbed them, covering them with my hands.

Baby, was right.
