Epilogue
With the Royal Tiger Reserve compromised, the harimau needed a new sanctuary.
To Nadirah’s surprise, they already had a location in the Belum-Temengor Forest Reserve located in Perak.
Farah explained they’d begun the process of building the huts in a remote location more than a year ago, as they’d had too many close calls.
After the wedding, in the new sanctuary, to Nadira’s shock and pleasure, she got hired as the reserve’s tiger keeper.
Apparently, Johan had enough influence to ensure she received the position, along with a hefty salary, which allowed her and Phoenix to buy a house.
Not under her name, of course. They remained conscious the general might be seeking them, although Phoenix seemed convinced the man had moved on.
Something about a big ape being seen at the airport, most likely seeking a plane to stowaway on.
Still, they remained vigilant, which included watching security cameras and a few neighbors who had a vested interest. Farah chose to live with Johan and Zafira across the street and was a constant presence in their home, especially since Nenek never went back to her sister’s after the wedding.
Why would she when their house had room for her?
Not to mention, once Nenek found out Nadirah was with child, she first cried and then stated quite emphatically she wasn’t going anywhere.
Nadirah couldn’t have been happier about the way things turned out, even if Phoenix tended to hover overly much.
He worried about the child she carried, and so did she. Thus far, everything had progressed normally, but they were still in the first trimester. It reassured to know the ultrasounds had yet to see anything worrisome, and thus far, the pregnancy proceeded without mishap.
Over the next few weeks, they settled into a routine that had her happier than she ever imagined.
It started with breakfast across from her husband, served by Nenek, who refused to relax.
Then, they carpooled with Zafira to the reserve, since she’d been hired along with Phoenix, as deterrents to poachers.
The pleasure of her new life didn’t curdle until Phoenix got a phone call that left him looking grave.
“What’s wrong?”
“Looks like my army pal, Idris, might have a lead on the general’s new base of operation.”
She knew by the expression on his face what he’d say next. “You’re going to help him take it down.”
“I have to.” Because that was the only way they’d ever be safe.
“Please come back to me,” she whispered, even as her voice choked.
“Always.”
Will they finally put an end to Project Therianthrope? Find out in Grizzly Sleuth.
