Chapter 12 #4

Thorne's face closes. "That," he says, voice low and final, "is precisely why no one speaks."

No one moves. No one argues because the danger in the room is suddenly too real to challenge.

Fated souls. Shared sensations. Silent words.

Magic where there should be none. A shadow that comes through unbroken wards.

A council woman with stones that react to my mark.

A mother who knows more than she says and Valerius beside me, his soul apparently tied to mine in a way no temporary academy bond should be able to touch.

I look at him. He is already looking at me. For a moment, the ward chamber disappears. There is only the space between us. The word he sent still lives inside me.

Mine.

And the word I gave him still burns between us.

Safe.

Neither of us says them aloud. We don't need to. That is the most dangerous part.

Professor Thorne dismisses us ten minutes later with more warnings than instructions.

Cover the mark. Avoid council representatives.

No unsupervised magic. Report dreams, shadows, whispers, sudden heat, strange reflections.

Do not test the silent communication outside warded spaces.

Do not let anyone know touch stabilizes the bond.

Every warning makes the world feel smaller.

By the time we leave the chamber, I feel like Arcana Academy has turned into a beautiful trap around me. Seren walks on my left, unusually quiet. Valerius walks on my right, close enough that his sleeve almost brushes mine. No one speaks until we reach the corridor outside the south hall.

Then Seren stops. "I need a second," she says.

I turn to her. "Seren?"

Her eyes are bright. Frightened. Angry. "I'm fine," she says quickly, which means she is absolutely not. "I just need one second to process that my best friend is apparently in a terrifying soul bond with the academy's most emotionally constipated villain prince."

Valerius says, "I am standing here."

"I know." She says.

"Then choose your words carefully." He warns her.

"I did. I removed several." She informs him.

I laugh. It comes out shaky. Seren's face crumples for half a second before she throws her arms around me. I stiffen, then hug her back. Her voice is fierce against my ear. "I don't care what this is. I don't care what you are. You're still Val. You're still mine too."

Mine too. The words make my eyes burn. From the corner of my vision, I see Valerius look away. Not angry. Maybe trying to give us privacy. Maybe because the word mine means too much now.

Seren pulls back and wipes her eyes quickly. "I'm going to find Eli."

"Thorne said not to tell him." Valerius reminds her.

"I'm not. But if I don't act normal, he'll know something is wrong, and unfortunately, he has more brain cells than I originally hoped."

"Seren." I say in a serious tone.

"I won't say anything." Her eyes flick to Valerius. "And you. If she so much as looks pale, you find me."

Valerius's expression is cold. "If she looks pale, she is probably standing in sunlight."

I glare at him. Seren points at him. "Less attitude. More guarding."

His gaze darkens. "I know how to guard."

The way he says it makes the air go quiet. Seren's expression shifts too. Something in his voice hints at a history none of us are allowed to touch.

She nods once, softer now. "Good." Then she leaves.

The silence between us is different now.

Full. Fated souls. I don't know how to hold that phrase in my body.

It sounds romantic in old stories. Beautiful.

Destined. Two souls recognizing each other through time and flame , but nothing about this feels simple enough to be beautiful.

It feels like being tied to a cliff edge by golden thread. One wrong move and we both fall.

Valerius starts walking. I follow.

Neither of us says where we are going. We simply move through the south corridor together, away from the ward chamber, away from Thorne's warning, away from the word survival still echoing in my skull.

Students pass. Whispers follow. I feel the urge to reach for my sleeve every time someone looks too long.

Valerius notices. After the third time, he stops near a window and turns toward me. "Stop touching your wrist."

"I'm not." I lie.

"You are." He says.

"I'm checking that it's covered." I admit.

"Everyone will notice because you keep checking." He says harshly.

I drop my hand. "You could say that less like an insult," I mutter.

"I could." He agrees.

"But you won't?" I say.

"No." HE shakes his head.

For some reason, that steadies me. His cruelty, when familiar, is easier than his care.

I look out the window. The courtyard below is bright with midmorning sun.

Students practice near the fountain. Branch flames flicker above the entrance hall.

Everything looks normal from here. I wonder how many secrets the academy has hidden beneath normal.

"Do you believe him?" I ask.

Valerius stands beside me, looking not at the courtyard but at the reflection in the glass. At us. "Thorne?"

"Yes." I confirm.

His answer is slow. "I believe he's afraid."

"That isn't what I asked." I say.

"It's the only answer that matters." I look at him. He continues, voice low. "Fear makes people honest in useful ways. Thorne was afraid for you, not of you."

My chest tightens. "And you?" I ask.

His eyes shift to mine in the reflection. "What about me?"

"Are you afraid for me or of me?"

The question lands hard. His face gives nothing away. For a moment, I think he will make it cruel. I almost want him to. It would be easier if he stayed exactly the boy I decided to hate. Then his voice slips into my mind. Not out loud. Not through the air. Inside the bond.

For.

I stop breathing. Valerius goes still beside me. He didn't mean to send it. I know because his expression changes instantly, sharp with shock and frustration.

For. Afraid for me.

The single word moves through me like flame under skin. I turn slowly. His jaw is clenched, eyes fixed straight ahead now, refusing to look at me. The bond hums between us. I should say something. I shouldn't. I do anyway. "Valerius."

"Don't." He says before I could continue.

"It happened." I tell him.

"I know." He sighs.

"We weren't in the ward chamber." I remind him.

"I know." He says with disappointment in his voice.

"Thorne said not to test it outside warded spaces." I say.

"I wasn't testing it." His voice is rough.

The hall moves around us, students passing at the far end, unaware that the world has just changed again because if thoughts can slip without permission, then privacy between us is no longer guaranteed and neither is distance.

His eyes close briefly. When he opens them, the cruel mask is back, but it fits badly. "We control it," he says.

"How?" I ask.

"I don't know yet." There is that word again. Yet. Not I don't know. I don't know yet. As if he has already decided he will figure it out. As if whatever this is, he intends to stand in front of it until it either makes sense or burns.

I look back at the window. Our reflections stand side by side. Light and shadow. Gold and dark. A powerless girl who may not be powerless. A dangerous boy who may not be as heartless as he wants me to believe.

Fated souls.

The phrase whispers through me again. Valerius's eyes cut to mine. Oh. He heard it. My face burns. His mouth tightens, but there is no mockery in his expression. Only something heavy. Something neither of us is ready to name.

Then the bell tolls. The sound shakes the corridor, and both of us flinch slightly—not from fear of the bell, but because the bond pulses with it. A reminder. We are connected. In ways we don't understand. In ways that could get us killed.

Valerius straightens. "Class."

"I don't think I can sit through magical history right now." I admit.

"You can." I glare at him. He looks down at me, and for one second, the faintest trace of that almost-smile appears. "You're Valentina Starling," he says. "You've survived worse than a lecture."

My breath catches. Not because the words are sweet. They aren't. They are better than sweet. They are belief, small, rough, reluctant but belief.

I lift my chin. "And you're Valerius Draven. Try not to brood through all of it."

His mouth curves fully this time. "Impossible." The smile disappears almost instantly, but it leaves warmth behind.

Mine.

We walk toward class together, carrying a secret so dangerous even Professor Thorne is afraid to name it too loudly. Fated souls. The words follow with every step and somewhere deep beneath the fear, beneath the danger, beneath the warnings and shadows and silence, another truth begins to burn.

Whatever is happening to me, I'm not facing it alone. Not anymore.
