Chapter 16

The doors open. Cold mist spills out. Valerius moves beside me, close enough that our shoulders brush.

The bond steadies. We step inside. The doors close behind us.

The lower glasshouse is beautiful in the way poisonous things are beautiful.

Glass walls curve high above, disappearing into mist.

Pale vines hang from iron beams. Silver trees rise from black soil, their branches thin and sharp, leaves translucent as ice.

Flowers bloom in the shadows, white petals opening and closing like slow breaths.

The air smells of frost, damp earth, and something faintly sweet.

At the far center, across winding stone paths and thick growth, a small pedestal glows.

The branch token.

Between us and it, the garden shifts. A vine slides across the path. Valerius's hand lifts slightly. I catch his wrist before flame can appear. He looks at me.

"Defensive only," I whisper.

His eyes darken. "That was defense."

"The vine moved." I say.

"Suspiciously." He answers immediately, I almost smile.

The bond warms, a flower near my feet opens, petals glowing gold. We both stare at it. Then the petals snap shut.

Valerius's jaw tightens. "No smiling."

I look at him. "Excuse me?"

"The garden reacts." He informs me.

"You think my almost-smile summoned a flower?" I ask.

"I think everything you do is becoming inconveniently reactive." He says in almost a whisper.

My cheeks heat. "Everything?"

His gaze holds mine for half a second too long. Then he looks away. "Walk."

We move down the path. At first, the glasshouse only watches.

Leaves turn as we pass. Vines curl but don't strike.

Frost blooms over the stone under Valerius's boots, then melts beneath mine.

The bond hums softly, a thread between our wrists.

I try to keep my thoughts quiet, which is difficult, because every time Valerius walks close enough for his sleeve to brush mine, my mind remembers the kiss.

His mouth. His hand at the back of my neck.

The way his lips brushed mine with hunger.

A branch cracks overhead. Valerius stops. "What did you think?"

My face burns. "Nothing."

The garden shivers. A gold flower opens on the vine beside us. Valerius looks at it. Then at me. I glare. "Do not say anything."

"I wasn't going to." I answer him.

"You were." He says.

"I was going to think it." I admit.

"That's worse." His mouth twitches.

The vine lashes. It snaps toward my wrist, thorned and silver, aiming directly for the hidden mark.

Valerius moves. Black fire flashes. The vine burns to ash an inch from my skin.

The garden erupts. Every tree around us trembles.

Frost explodes across the glass walls. Vines whip from the shadows, no longer curious, no longer slow.

Valerius grabs my hand. "Run!"

We run. The stone path twists beneath us, changing as we move.

Silver branches slash across the air. Valerius burns the worst of them, controlled bursts of Shadowflame that vanish before they can spread.

I hold his hand because if I let go, the garden becomes louder.

The bond panics when distance opens... or maybe I do. It is getting harder to tell.

A root bursts from the ground. I stumble. Valerius catches me by the waist and swings me behind him as thorns slam into the space where I stood. His Shadowflame surges. The glasshouse ceiling trembles.

"Valerius!" I shout.

He freezes, not because I screamed, because fear punches through the bond. Mine and his... Both. The black fire shrinks back under his control, but the garden has already tasted the emotion. The mist darkens.

A whisper moves through the trees. "Valentina." My blood turns cold. Valerius hears it too. His head snaps toward the shadows.

"No," he says.

The garden answers with another whisper. "Starling."

Vines part ahead of us, not opening a path but revealing something.

A figure stands between the silver trees.

Tall and thin with no face and mouth of pale fire.

The same shadow from my room. My breath dies.

Valerius steps in front of me immediately.

This time, the thing is not alone. The mist around it fills with shapes. Silhouettes, watching, waiting.

The glasshouse trial is supposed to create obstacles from emotion. This isn't emotion, this is memory. This is something following me.

Valerius's hand tightens around mine. The bond opens.

Stay behind me.

The thought slams into me, fierce and clear. I answer without meaning to.

No.

His head turns slightly. Even now, even with a shadow thing standing ahead of us, irritation flashes through the bond.

Valentina.

He warns. I step beside him instead of behind. His eyes cut to mine, furious.

"I'm not hiding while it says my name," I whisper.

The shadow tilts its head. Its pale mouth stretches.

Valerius's Shadowflame coils around his hand.

The garden trembles, eager to react. Professor Thorne's warning echoes in my mind.

No excessive force. Report bond reaction.

Avoid public flares. Even if no one stands inside the glasshouse, the council is watching, Magistra Voss is watching.

I feel it like cold fingers along my spine.

The shadow lifts one thin arm. It points at me.

My wrist ignites. Gold light bursts beneath my sleeve, racing up my arm in thin lines before I can hide it.

I gasp and clutch my wrist. Valerius turns toward me.

That single second is all the vines need.

They explode from the ground, wrapping around his legs, his arms, his throat.

"Valerius!"

Shadowflame surges, but the vines tighten, silver thorns glowing with glasshouse wards.

They aren't ordinary plants, they are containment growth.

Made to hold magic. Made to hold him. His fire snaps and snarls, burning black around the vines without freeing him.

The shadow moves closer. My heart slams so hard I can't think.

Valerius's eyes lock on mine.

Run.

The command hits my mind.

No.

I answer him.

Run, Valentina.

He yells through the bond.

No.

His rage flares. The bond pulls so hard it hurts.

The shadow whispers again. "Valentina."

The sound crawls beneath my skin. My wrist burns brighter. The vines tighten around Valerius's throat. Something in me breaks, not loudly, not like glass... Like a lock turning. My fear changes shape, it becomes heat. Heat that turns white-gold.

The world slows.

I see every vine. Every thorn. Every black flame struggling under silver ward-light.

I see Valerius's jaw clenched, his eyes furious, his body fighting because he would rather choke than stop trying to reach me.

I see the shadow behind him, head tilted, mouth of pale fire open around my name and something inside me says no.

Not a thought, not a word... A command older than language.

The gold lines under my skin flare. Light bursts from my wrist.

The vines around Valerius turn white. For one heartbeat, the entire glasshouse goes silent.

Then every vine holding him disintegrates into ash.

Valerius drops to one knee. The shadow recoils.

I stare at my hand. Gold light glows beneath my skin.

Not bright enough to be seen from outside?

No, it's too bright. Panic slams back into me. The light flickers. Valerius is suddenly in front of me, one hand closing around my wrist, his body shielding mine from the glass walls, from the observers outside, from everyone.

His Shadowflame rises around us in a dark screen.

"Breathe," he says. I can't. "Valentina, breathe."

"I did something." I shake.

"I know." He nods.

"I did something." I look at him with panic.

His grip tightens. "I know."

My voice breaks. "Everyone saw."

His eyes flash. "No."

"You don't know that." I shake my head.

"I do." He tries to reassure me.

"How?" I ask, tears forming in my eyes.

His gaze holds mine, fierce and steady. "Because I covered it."

The dark screen of Shadowflame curls around us, thick and controlled, hiding my glowing wrist from the glass walls. He's shielding me again. Always shielding. My chest cracks open around something too big to name.

Behind him, the shadow hisses. Valerius turns. The thing is retreating into the mist. "No," he snarls.

He lifts his hand. I catch his wrist. The contact snaps through both of us. "Don't," I whisper.

His eyes burn. "It came for you."

"And if you burn this whole place trying to chase it, the council will know why." I whisper, brushing my thumb on his wrist.

His jaw tightens. He knows I'm right. He hates it. The shadow fades fully into the mist but before it disappears, it's pale mouth opens one final time but it doesn't speak out loud like all the other times, it speaks through the bond, both of us hear it.

Awake.

Then it is gone. The glasshouse exhales.

The vines go still. The path ahead clears, revealing the pedestal.

The branch token waits, glowing softly in the center.

As if this is still a trial. As if my world didn't just split open.

Valerius keeps his hand around my wrist until the gold light fades.

Only when my skin looks normal again does he lower the Shadowflame screen.

The glasshouse beyond us appears calm. Too calm...

Silver trees, pale vines, black soil, the pedestal.

I look toward the glass doors in the distance.

I can't see the observers through the fog but they're there.

"What do we do?" I whisper.

Valerius looks at the token. Then at me. "We finish."

I laugh once, shakily. "Of course."

"If we stop now, they ask why." He says.

"They're going to ask anyway." I remind him.

"Then we give them less." He steps toward the pedestal, then pauses when the bond tugs.

His hand reaches back. Not a question this time.

I take it, our fingers lock. The warmth between us settles my shaking.

We walk to the pedestal together. The branch token is small and made of dark iron, carved with all three accepted symbols.

Tempest storm. Veil skull and bloom. Aether flame in an open hand.

Valerius reaches for it. The token doesn't move. He frowns. I already know before he says anything. It wants me. My stomach twists. "No."

Valerius looks at me. "Valentina."

I panic. "No. If I touch it and something happens—"

He cuts me off. "I'll cover it."

"That's not a plan." I say.
