Chapter 17
I wake to the sound of his heartbeat. Not the bell. Not the academy humming through the walls like an ancient thing remembering how to breathe. His heartbeat, slow and steady, alive beneath my cheek. For one suspended moment, I don't move. I don't open my eyes. I only listen.
Thud. Thud. Thud. Valerius.
His arm is around me, heavy and warm across my back.
My fingers are curled loosely in the front of his shirt, the fabric wrinkled where I must have held on during sleep.
One of my legs is tangled with his beneath the blankets, and his chin rests lightly near the top of my head.
We're closer than we were when we fell asleep.
Sometime in the night, distance disappeared, my body decided he was safety and moved toward him without asking my pride for permission.
I should be embarrassed. Maybe I will be in a minute but right now, I'm too tired to hate how much I need this.
The room is soft with dawn. Pale light slips through the curtains, turning the air silver.
The candles burn low. No shadows crowd the corners.
No whispers crawl beneath the bed. The wards Valerius placed around the room still hum faintly, dark and protective, stitched into the doorframe, window, and walls.
Nothing came for me because he stayed, because he held me, because when my whole life cracked open with the word sealed, he didn't try to fix it with easy answers. He simply became the place I could fall apart without being watched like a problem.
My throat tightens. I thought anger would be loud this morning but it isn't.
It's quiet. The truth waits inside me the moment I wake, cold and patient, slipping between the warmth of his arms and the fragile peace of morning.
My fingers tighten in Valerius's shirt. His heartbeat changes, then his body wakes around mine, not suddenly, not with panic, not like the first morning, when everything in him reached for danger before he reached for himself.
This time, he wakes slowly.
His hand shifts against my back. His breath moves through my hair. His arm tightens for a second, as if some sleeping part of him wants to pull me closer before the waking part remembers it's not allowed to want. I feel the thought through the bond before he can hide it.
Stay.
One word. My eyes burn. Valerius goes still. He felt it slip. For a moment, neither of us moves.
Then his voice comes rough with sleep, low above me. "I didn't mean to send that."
I keep my face against his chest. "I know."
Silence. The bond hums between us, warm and bruised.
I should make a joke. Something sharp enough to save us both from the softness gathering in the room.
Something about him being dramatic even in his sleep.
Something about Shadowflame boys apparently becoming clingy before breakfast but I can't.
Not this morning. Not after yesterday. Not with his heart still beating under my ear like a promise he never said aloud.
So I whisper, "I want to stay."
His breath catches. I feel it move through him.
I lift my head. The moment I look at him, something inside my chest folds open.
Valerius is beautiful in the morning in a way that feels unfair.
Not polished. Not dangerous in the sharp, deliberate way he is in corridors and training halls.
His black hair is messy against my pillow.
His olive skin is warm from sleep. The cruel line of his mouth is softer, unguarded in the pale light.
His hazel eyes search mine with none of the arrogance he wears so easily.
There's no academy here. No council. No Mira.
No Flame. No fated souls spoken like a warning.
Only a boy who stayed. Only the girl who asked him to.
His gaze drops to my mouth. Not like in the dining hall, not as a challenge, not as a public answer to someone else's cruelty. This time it's slower. There's so much more emotion in his eyes, because this time, no one is watching. This time, there is nothing to prove.
His hand moves from my back to my cheek, stopping before he touches me fully, as if even now he is asking. Always asking now. It ruins me more than if he simply took. I lean into his palm. His eyes close for half a second. The bond warms.
"Valentina," he whispers. My name sounds like surrender.
I don't know which one of us moves first, maybe both, within the next second his mouth touches mine softly.
So softly it breaks something, this kiss is nothing like the one in the dining hall.
The kiss in the dining hall was fire thrown in the face of cruelty.
A public line drawn in front of everyone.
A declaration neither of us understood until it was already burning through us.
This one is quiet, tender and terrifying.
His lips move against mine like he is trying to learn what doesn't hurt.
Like he's afraid that if he kisses me too hard, I will remember every cruel thing he ever said and vanish from his arms.
His thumb brushes my cheek once, trembling slightly, and the tiny break in his control makes my chest ache.
I kiss him back. Hard. Every ounce of fear, relief, longing, and confusion I've been carrying crashes into that single kiss.
I lean into him until there isn't a breath of space left between us.
My fingers disappear into his dark hair, threading through the soft strands as though I'm afraid he'll vanish if I let go.
For one impossible heartbeat, he barely moves.
I feel it. The restraint. The careful way he's holding himself back, terrified of crossing a line that neither of us knows how to define.
It breaks something inside me. I kiss him again—deeper this time, pouring every unspoken feeling into him.
A rough sound escapes his throat. Just the sound of someone losing a battle they've been fighting for far too long.
The bond shivers. His emotions pour through it before he can stop them.
The desperate need to hold me closer. The fear of hurting me.
The disbelief that I'm here... choosing him.
I feel all of it and instead of pulling away, I lean farther into him.
The movement steals his balance. He falls back with a quiet breath of surprise, and I go with him, barely noticing when I end up straddling his lap.
His eyes search mine for the smallest sign to stop.
He finds none. Something inside him finally snaps.
His hands find my waist, holding me as though I'm the only solid thing left in the world.
He kisses me with everything he's been denying himself.
Not desperate, not reckless, just devastatingly honest. It steals the air from my lungs.
Every time our lips meet, it feels like lightning striking beneath my skin, bright and impossible, leaving warmth blooming through every part of me.
The bond surges. Warm gold wraps around dark shadow, weaving together instead of colliding.
For the first time... It doesn't feel like power.
It feels like us. His fear. My anger. His endless restraint.
My fragile trust. The quiet hope neither of us has dared speak aloud.
The bond carries every feeling between us without a single word, and suddenly I understand why silence can be louder than any confession because this kiss isn't asking for forever.
It isn't making promises. It's simply telling the truth.
That somehow... Against every rule, every warning, every impossible circumstance...
We've already begun to belong to each other and the realization shakes me far more than the kiss ever could.
Valerius makes a low sound against my mouth, it almost sounds painful. He pulls back just enough to breathe. His forehead rests against mine. Our eyes stay closed. Neither of us lets go.
The kiss remains between us, softer than flame and heavier than fate.
I whisper, "Did you feel that?"
His thumb moves along my cheek. "Yes."
"What was it?" I ask.
For a long moment, he says nothing. Then his voice comes low and rough. "Not the bond."
My heart stops. I open my eyes. He's already looking at me. The words settle between us.
Not the bond. Not magic forcing our mouths together. Not ancient fire deciding what we feel. Not fated souls dragging us by invisible thread. Us. The truth trembles through me so fiercely I almost look away but I don't. Not this time.
"If it wasn't the bond," I whisper, "then what was it?"
His gaze holds mine. Something raw moves behind his eyes. Something honest enough to scare him. "I don't know how to name things like that."
My throat tightens. Of course he doesn't.
Valerius knows how to name danger, strategy, power, threats, weakness, control.
He knows how to turn fear into fire and silence into armor, but this?
This quiet ache between us. This almost-gentleness.
This feeling that makes me want to hide and reach for him at the same time.
Maybe neither of us knows how to name it.
I touch his jaw. His eyes flutter slightly, just once, like the softness of it hurts more than any blow. "You don't have to name it yet," I whisper. Yet. The word moves through the bond. Not mine or his. Both.
His hand slides to the back of my neck, and for one breath I think he's going to kiss me again. He looks like he wants to. I want him to.
The academy bell tolls. Reality crashes into the room. Valerius's eyes close in visible irritation. I laugh, the sound comes out small and shaky, but real. His gaze opens on mine. The corner of his mouth curves.
"I hate that bell," I whisper.
"I can burn it." His smile grows bigger.
"You can't burn the academy bell." I laugh.
"I can try." He shrugs his shoulders. I like this playful side of Valerius.
The side I get to see, only me. Mine. "You would get expelled."
His expression turns dry. "After everything that has happened, the bell is what gets me expelled?"
I laugh hard, it fills the room like sunlight. Valerius watches me as if the sound is something he wants to keep. The laughter fades because morning has come and the truth is still waiting.
Sealed.
My smile disappears. Valerius feels the shift instantly. His thumb brushes my cheek again. "We don't have to do it now."
I know what he means. My mother. The confrontation waiting like a knife.
"Yes," I whisper. "We do."
