Chapter 20

My wrist burns. Seren screams my name again, but the sound feels far away, swallowed beneath the sudden roar inside my blood. Not fear. Something deeper. Something furious. Something that has been buried for years beneath a seal built from my mother's love and terror.

Starfire.

It rises like it has been waiting for this exact moment.

The candles explode higher, white-gold flames licking toward the ceiling.

The room fills with heat, but nothing burns.

Not the curtains. Not the bed. Not Seren, standing beside the chair with both hands raised, green Veil magic shaking violently around her fingers.

"Val!" she shouts.

I try to answer but I can't. The shadow lifts one long arm.

Its fingers aren't fingers. They are thin strands of dark, each tipped with a pinprick of pale flame.

They reach toward me. The mark on my wrist flares so bright my sleeve turns transparent around it.

Gold circle. Shadow ring. White thread. All of it burning as one.

Seren throws herself between us. "Absolutely not!"

Her Veil magic bursts outward in a green shield, blooming from her palms like spectral glass.

For one heartbeat, I see the Veil in her the way I never have before—not just healing, not just decay, not just graveyard whispers and spirit-thread.

I see life and death braided through her hands, bright and fierce and hers.

The shadow strikes. Its hand meets Seren's shield.

The room screams. The walls bend inward.

The window cracks in a spiderweb of silver lines.

The candles gutter blue, then gold, then white again.

The council observer outside my door shouts something, but the door, already split down the center, slams shut from the inside as if the room itself refuses to let him enter.

Seren's shield fractures. She gasps, knees buckling. "No!" I lunge forward. The shadow turns its faceless head toward me.

That's when I feel Valerius. Not near. Not yet but coming. His presence rips through me, dark and blazing, so violent with fear that my own breath catches.

His voice is inside me.

Valentina! I'm almost there.

The answer leaves me before I think it.

I know.

The shadow hears. Its pale mouth widens.

"Bound," it whispers.

The word slides through the room, and the bond twists. Pain snaps through my chest. Across the academy, Valerius snarls through the bond. I feel it more than hear it. The shadow's head tilts, as if amused. It can feel him. It can feel us.

Seren pushes herself upright, face pale, one hand clutching the back of the chair. Blood trickles from her nose.

My stomach drops. "Seren."

"I'm fine," she says instantly. She is absolutely not.

The shadow moves again. Faster this time.

Seren raises her shield, but it flickers.

She's exhausted and hurt but she still steps in front of me.

My best friend, who brought me nervous bread and angry fruit, who threatened to rot shoes and haunt enemies, who has stood beside me through every powerless year.

She stands between me and something ancient with shaking hands and blood on her mouth.

Something inside me stops trembling. "No," I say. My voice is quiet. The shadow freezes.

Seren turns her head slightly. "Val?"

The candles go still. White-gold light gathers beneath my skin, rising from my wrist up my arm, threading through my veins like molten stars. For the first time, it feels like something inside me isn't trying to break free. It's trying to stand up.

The shadow whispers again. "Awake."

My fingers curl. "I am." The room erupts.

Gold light bursts from me in a wave, not fire, not exactly, but something older than flame.

It slams into the shadow and throws it backward through the foot of my bed.

The wood doesn't break. The blankets don't burn.

The shadow tears through them like smoke through water, striking the wall hard enough to crack stone.

Seren stares at me. I stare at my hands.

White-gold light shines under my skin. The seal is cracking.

Not slowly now, not gently either. The shadow unfolds from the wall.

Its mouth burns brighter. A sound comes from it, low and terrible, like laughter dragged through ash. The door behind me explodes inward.

The council observer flies backward into the corridor, thrown by black fire that doesn't touch his skin but knocks the breath from him anyway. Valerius fills the doorway. Barefoot. Shirt half-buttoned. Hair wild. Eyes black with rings of gold.

Shadowflame coils around both arms, crawling over his shoulders like living armor.

Behind him, the corridor is chaos—council bells screaming, students shouting, silver-cloaked guards scattered across the floor, black fire streaking the stone walls but burning nothing except the wards meant to keep him away from me.

He sees me. The fury in his face cracks into something worse. Relief and pain with an once of terror. Then he sees Seren bleeding. Then the shadow. The whole room drops into silence. Valerius steps inside. The Shadowflame at his back rises like wings.

The shadow tilts its head. "Draven," it whispers.

Valerius smiles. There's nothing human in it. "Run."

The shadow lunges. Valerius meets it halfway.

Black fire explodes into white-gold light.

The force throws me backward, but Seren catches my arm and pulls me down beside the bed.

Heat tears through the room. The window shatters outward.

Curtains snap in a wind that comes from nowhere.

The candles blow sideways and keep burning.

Valerius drives the shadow against the far wall with one hand wrapped around its throat or where its throat should be.

Shadowflame devours the thing's edges, black fire biting into darkness, red rims flashing at the center.

The creature hisses, its pale mouth opening wider, wider, until the fire inside it spills down its chin like liquid moonlight. It reaches for his chest.

"No!" I scream.

The shadow's hand plunges toward Valerius's heart.

The bond yanks hard. I feel the danger in him as if the hand is reaching into me.

Starfire answers. A thread of white-gold light snaps from my wrist to his.

It strikes the shadow's arm. The creature shrieks.

The sound shatters every remaining glass object in my room.

Perfume bottles burst on my vanity. The mirror cracks from top to bottom. Seren throws both hands over her ears.

Valerius turns his head toward me. For one impossible second, our eyes meet through the storm of fire. He is holding the shadow. I'm burning it. Together. The bond opens fully.

Not like before. Not words slipping. Not feelings leaking.

This is a door being ripped off its hinges.

I feel his hand around the creature's throat.

He feels the Starfire surging through my wrist.

I feel his rage. He feels my fear. I feel the place in his chest where his heart is pounding too hard.

He feels the exact shape of my magic rising.

For one terrifying heartbeat, I know what Shadowflame wants.

It wants to consume. It wants to protect by destroying.

It wants to turn every threat into ash before it can breathe near me again and he knows what Starfire wants.

It wants to undo. Not burn. Not kill. Just undo.

Break the shape of the thing that shouldn't be here.

Erase the borrowed dark. Unmake the spell beneath the shadow.

Valerius hears that thought at the same time I do.

His eyes flash. Then he does something I did not know he could do.

He stops fighting against my magic and lets it guide his.

Shadowflame shifts. The black fire stops devouring and begins containing, wrapping the shadow in a dark cage.

The creature thrashes, pale mouth screaming without sound now, its limbs stretching too long, its body losing shape. I rise to my feet.

Seren grabs for me. "Val, don't!"

"I have to." My voice doesn't sound like mine.

Valerius's gaze snaps to me.

Stay back.

No.

Valentina.

You said I choose.

His face twists in pain, pride and terror.

Yes.

The answer comes through the bond, broken and fierce.

I step toward them. The Starfire under my skin brightens with each step.

My nightdress whips around my legs in the wind.

My hair lifts around my face. The mark at my wrist is no longer just a ring.

It is a small sun. Valerius keeps the shadow trapped against the wall, every muscle in his body shaking from the effort.

His Shadowflame cage bends inward, containing what shouldn't have a body.

The creature turns its faceless head toward me. "Star," it whispers.

My breath stops. Not Starling. Star. Valerius snarls and tightens the flame.

The shadow laughs again. "Found."

Cold runs through me. This thing is not hunting blindly. It was sent. The thought hits both of us. Valerius's rage nearly breaks the cage.

"Who sent you?" he demands.

The shadow's pale mouth flickers. It speaks in a voice that is not one voice, but many. Old voices. Dry voices. Buried voices. "The old law remembers."

Professor Thorne appears in the doorway. His face goes white. Behind him, my mother pushes through the corridor chaos, Professor Vale at her side, Seren shouting for them to hurry.

The moment my mother sees the shadow, she freezes. Recognition written all over her face. That hurts almost as much as the seal.

"You know what it is," I say.

My mother's eyes flick to me, then to the light beneath my skin. Horror breaks across her face. "Valentina, step away from it."

Valerius's voice is lethal. "Answer her."

The shadow laughs softly. The sound crawls over the walls.

My mother swallows. "It is a Remnant," she says.

Professor Thorne shuts the broken door with one violent gesture and seals what remains of the room in a ward so dense the air turns blue at the edges. Council bells fade outside. Not gone but blocked.

"A Remnant of what?" I ask.

The shadow's mouth opens. My mothers doesn't. Professor Thorne answers. "The purge."

The word drops into the room. Purge. Something in my Starfire recoils. A memory. Not mine. Older. A field of burning stars. Voices screaming. Magic ripped from blood. A crown of white flame falling into black water.

I stumble. Valerius's head turns instantly.
