Chapter 24

The archive goes cold. Ancient Masters. Here, not in three nights. Not coming, they're here. My stomach turns. "You did this," I whisper.

Voss lifts her head. Her eyes gleam through the shadows. "No, Miss Starling," she says, voice soft and ruined with satisfaction. "You did."

Valerius's Shadowflame lashes toward her. Professor Thorne snaps a ward between them before it can hit. "Not now."

Valerius turns on him. "She opened the door."

"And if you kill her before we know how to close it, we all die beautifully informed of nothing." Thorne says.

Seren says nothing. That is the first wrong thing.

Seren always says something. Even when she is terrified.

Especially when she is terrified. She fills silence with sharp little jokes and threats about rotting shoes, nervous bread, dead grandmothers, and all the ways she refuses to let fear win but now she stands too still beside a broken shelf, green Veil magic glowing faintly around her fingers.

My heart stumbles. I look at her. "Seren?" Her eyes aren't on me. They are on the black stars. Her face is pale.

The archive doors above burst fully open.

A wave of darkness spills down the stairs like ink poured through air.

Council guards scatter, some shouting, some falling back behind shelves.

The three black stars pulse, and the freestanding vault chamber groans as if the mirror glass inside it is being pushed inward from another world.

Professor Thorne lifts both hands. Blue-white wards slam into place across the archive entrance. They hold for one heartbeat. Two.

Then the darkness speaks. "Kneel."

The word is not loud. It doesn't need to be. Every ward Thorne cast shatters. He staggers back, gasping as if struck in the chest.

"Professor!" I reach for him, but Valerius stops me with an arm across my waist.

"Stay behind me." He says.

"I'm done with behind you." I yank my way to his side.

"Then stay beside me and don't be reckless." His gaze sharpens.

The darkness at the stairs parts. Three figures descend.

They don't walk like people. They glide.

Each wears robes darker than the space between stars, their hems trailing smoke over the archive floor.

Their faces are hidden beneath silver masks shaped like calm, expressionless faces.

No mouths. No eyes. Only smooth metal marked at the brow with the black-star sigil.

Ancient Masters.

The air bends around them. The archive bends around them. Books turn inward on their shelves as if afraid to show their titles. My Starfire recoils under my skin. Valerius's Shadowflame rises.

The first Master tilts his masked head toward him. "Shadowbound blood," he says. His voice is the one we heard before.

"Still baring teeth for a dead throne." Valerius smiles.

It keeps his attention on Valerius. "Come closer and count them."

The second Master turns toward me. Even through the mask, I feel him looking. Not at my face, at the mark beneath my sleeve, at my chest where the sovereign heart burned itself into me, at whatever I am now. "Starborne," he says.

The word passes through the archive. The mirrors answer.

Starborne. Starborne. Starborne.

I press one hand to my chest. The mark there burns beneath my uniform, newly carved by the broken key. Not visible, but alive. A brand over my heart. Valerius feels it at the same time, because his own mark answers beneath his shirt.

Twin pain. Twin fire. Twin fate.

Voss pushes herself to her feet, swaying but triumphant. The third Master turns toward her. "Magistra."

She bows. My father inhales sharply. Professor Thorne's face hardens with disgust.

Voss keeps her head lowered. "The sovereign heart is restored as promised."

As promised. The words hit the archive. My blood chills. Valerius's Shadowflame darkens.

"You serve them," he says.

Voss straightens. "I serve order."

"You serve corpses wearing masks." He shoots at her.

The first Master turns his blank silver face toward him. "Careful, Draven heir. Your bloodline was spared once because it bent."

Valerius's rage punches through the bond. It's not uncontrolled. It's worse, clean and focused like a blade laid across a throat. "My bloodline is done bending."

The Master lifts one hand. Every shadow in the archive rises. Valerius steps forward. So do I. Our marks flare together. Starfire and Shadowflame surge at the same time, gold and black meeting in the space before us. The shadows freeze midair, unable to advance, unable to retreat.

The Master's masked head tilts. "Not trained," he says.

The second Master finishes, "But awake."

The third says, "Enough."

One word and the shadows collapse. Not because they're defeated because the Masters choose to pull them back. That frightens me more. They're testing us.

Professor Thorne moves slowly to my other side, one hand at his chest where the broken ward struck him. "You have no authority inside Arcana."

The first Master turns toward him. "All authority you know was built from what we allowed to survive."

Seren still hasn't moved. I look at her again. Her hands are at her sides now. Green light curls around her fingers. Too calm. Too ready.

"Seren," I whisper.

This time, she looks at me and my heart breaks for her before she says anything because her eyes are full of tears. I take a step toward her.

Valerius's grip tightens. "Valentina," he says, low.

I barely hear him. The archive is disappearing around the edges.

There's only Seren. My best friend. My safe place before Valerius became one.

The girl who found me in hallways and made me laugh when everyone else made me feel like dust.

The girl who sat beside me when branch flames ignored me.

The girl who defended me from Mira. The girl who slept in my chair because she refused to leave me alone after the council separated us.

The girl who bled for me when the shadow came.

My voice shakes. "Seren?"

Her tears fall. "I'm sorry."

The words don't make sense. My body refuses them. "What are you sorry for?"

She looks past me. At Voss. At the Ancient Masters.

The second Master lifts one hand and Seren answers, her green magic flares and Professor Thorne drops. It happens so fast I don't understand it at first.

One second, he is standing beside us. The next, a ring of Veil magic snaps around his throat and wrists, yanking him down to his knees. Green-black vines of life-and-death energy coil around him, binding his magic before he can cast.

"Thorne!" I scream.

Valerius moves, but Seren lifts her other hand. A second Veil bind snaps across his chest. Not enough to hold him fully but enough to make him stagger. His Shadowflame rips through half of it instantly, but the delay is all Voss needs.

The burned black cuff on his wrist flares back to life. A shard of old law still embedded in it glows. Valerius grunts, teeth clenched, Shadowflame sputtering.

I turn on Seren. I can't breathe. "Stop," I whisper.

Her face crumples. "Val—"

"Stop!" My Starfire flares so violently every lantern in the archive bursts. White-gold light floods the clearing.

Seren flinches, but her magic holds Thorne down. Professor Thorne stares at her from his knees, face empty with shock.

"Miss Ashwick," he says. His voice is quiet.

Seren sobs once. "I'm sorry, Professor."

Voss smiles. My stomach twists. "No," I whisper.

The first Master glides closer to Seren and places a pale hand on her shoulder. She doesn't pull away.

The world breaks. Not with a scream. Not with a blast of Starfire. Quietly, inside me. A crack from my throat to my heart. Seren stands beside him. Beside them.

Voss lifts her chin. "Well done, Miss Ashwick."

Well done. Miss Ashwick. My best friend's name in Voss's mouth. My knees nearly give. Valerius tears through the last of the Veil bind around his chest and steps in front of me, Shadowflame rising despite the cuff shard.

His voice is not human. "You."

Seren flinches. He takes one step toward her. The archive floor blackens under his boot.

Voss lifts a hand. "Careful, Mr. Draven. She is useful alive."

Valerius smiles without warmth. "Not to me."

Seren looks at me then. Not him. Me. Her face is wet with tears. "Val, please listen—"

"No." My voice is barely a sound.

She stops like I struck her. Good. I want it to hurt. I want her to feel even a fraction of what is happening inside me. But then she whispers, "I never wanted them to hurt you."

A laugh tears out of me. "You never wanted them to hurt me?"

My voice rises, shaking. "You were there. You saw the council separate us. You saw me fall apart. You saw the shadow in my room. You held me while I cried because I couldn't feel him."

Her eyes squeeze shut. I step forward. Valerius reaches for me, but I move past his hand. "You knew?" I whisper. "All of it?"

Seren opens her eyes. Her silence answers. The archive tilts.

I press one hand to my stomach because I think I might be sick. "You knew they were watching me?"

Tears spill down her face. "Yes."

"You told Voss?" I ask in disbelief.

She shakes her head quickly. "Not everything."

Not everything. The words are a knife. Valerius's Shadowflame lashes outward, slamming into a shelf behind Seren hard enough to split the wood.

She jumps. He snarls, "Wrong answer."

The first Master turns his mask toward Valerius. "Temper."

Valerius's eyes go black. "You don't speak to me."

The Master lifts one hand. Pain slams through the bond. Valerius staggers. I gasp because I feel it too, a hook of old law pulling at the mark on his chest, the newly restored sovereign heart in him, trying to bend Shadowbound blood the way they once did.

"No!" I grab his arm. Starfire bursts from my palm and sears through the invisible hook.

The Master's head tilts. "Instinctive."

The second Master murmurs, "Protective."

The third says, "Promising."

I hate them. I hate how calm they are. I hate how they look at us like we are instruments pulled from storage.

Seren's voice trembles. "Valentina, I had no choice."

I turn back to her. The words blur through my tears. "No choice?"
