Chapter 30
Silence. Only silence. Perfect and complete but so wrong.
I don't hear the bond. I don't hear Valerius.
I don't hear anything. For one endless moment, I'm not inside Arcana.
I am nowhere. There's no courtyard beneath my feet.
No fire above me. No crown. No body. No breath.
Only white. An endless white world without sky or ground, stretching farther than sight.
Flames float through it, thousands of them. Some burn gold. Some silver. Some barely glow at all. Each flame holds a memory.
A child laughing beneath unfamiliar stars.
A woman screaming as masked figures drag her toward a pyre.
A man with white fire beneath his skin kissing someone goodbye.
A girl kneeling in a field of ash, holding her own severed braid.
A boy younger than I am standing before Aurelia and refusing to bow then burning for it.
The memories move around me like pieces of shattered mirrors. Not mine, theirs. Every Starborne who came before me. Every vessel Aurelia used. Every life she consumed.
My body returns slowly. Bare feet against invisible ground. Hands at my sides. A white dress moving in air that doesn't exist. The sovereign mark is gone from my chest. For one second, I believe that means I'm free.
Then I hear crying. A child trying not to be heard. I turn. Far away, beneath one of the floating memories, a little girl sits with her knees drawn to her chest. Light blonde hair hangs over her face. Her hands are wrapped around her bare wrists as if hiding marks that don't exist yet.
I know her. I know the thin shoulders. The pale skin. The blue-grey eyes that lift when I approach. Me when I was ten years old. Powerless. Still believing the academy might wake one morning and decide she belonged.
The little girl looks up at me. Tears streak her cheeks. "I knew you'd come back."
Something inside me breaks. I kneel in front of her. The movement feels more real than anything has since my father died. "Where are we?"
She looks at the floating flames. "Where she puts us."
"Aurelia?" I ask.
The child nods. "Every time it hurts too much, she locks another part away."
My throat tightens. The emotionless silence. The sovereign heart closing. The door without a handle. It wasn't only my magic protecting itself. Aurelia was dividing me. Making me smaller. Storing every piece that might resist.
The little girl presses one hand to her chest. "She told me no one wanted me."
Pain rushes through me. My father's coldness. The blank cloak. The whispers. Students laughing when magic passed me by. My mother's secrets. Valerius looking at me in the beginning as if I was an inconvenience. All the moments Aurelia could twist into proof.
I reach for the child. She recoils from the touch. I stop. "May I?"
The girl studies my face. Then nods.
I take her hands. Warmth moves through both of us.
The first real warmth. It climbs my arms and settles behind my ribs.
Hope so fragile it hurts to touch. The child crawls into my arms.
I hold her. She smells like parchment, winter roses, and the soap my mother used when she washed my hair as a child.
"I was never nothing," she whispers.
"No." I shake my head. The word breaks from me. "You were never nothing."
The white world trembles. A crack appears in the distance. Gold light slips through. The little girl looks over my shoulder. "She heard you."
Aurelia stands behind me. She is beautiful.
Not the ruined queen from the memories. Not the voice inside my body.
Whole. White-gold hair flows down her back.
A crown of flame floats over her head. Her eyes are silver, bright enough to erase shadows.
She wears no armour, she doesn't need it.
Every flame around us bends toward her. Every trapped memory dims.
Aurelia smiles. "You continue to mistake broken pieces for strength."
I rise, keeping the child behind me. "You locked them here."
"I preserved what was useful." She says.
"You consumed them." I correct her.
"I gave them purpose." The flames around us flicker. Faces appear inside them. Aurelia walks closer. "Do you know how many generations failed before you?"
"I know how many you killed." I look back towards the flames.
Her smile does not change. "They were weak."
"They resisted you." I correct her.
"They resisted order." She says.
"You mean obedience." I say. The white world shakes.
Aurelia's gaze sharpens. Outside this place, something flickers. A pulse, so faint I almost miss it. Black-red... Shadowflame. Valerius. My breath catches.
Aurelia sees. Her expression hardens. "He is dead."
"No." I shake my head.
"You felt the silence." She reminds me.
"No." I refuse to believe it.
"You struck his heart." The image of Valerius before the blast struck him flashes before my eyes
"No." I shake the thought out of my head. The child behind me grips my dress.
Aurelia tilts her head. "Love made you kill him." The words are designed to cut. They do.
I see the courtyard again. My hand lifted. Starfire leaving my palm. Valerius refusing to move. The blast striking his chest. The bond disappearing. Anger rises like floodwater.
Aurelia smiles. She wants it. The sovereign heart feeds on emotion. Her power grows through pain.
I understand now.
Every tragedy. Every betrayal. Every sacrifice. She didn't only endure them. She cultivated them. My father's fear. Seren's guilt. The council's separation. Voss's cruelty. The Ancient Masters designed every wound to weaken the walls between Aurelia and me.
A queen restored through devastation.
I close my eyes, to feel. My father's hand against my cheek.
Seren standing in the Hall of Passing, choosing one final right thing.
Thorne saying, 'It is okay, Valentina.' My mother crying beside my bed.
Eli carrying a wounded child while his own heart broke.
Luc holding the river. Valerius, always Valerius.
His first cruel smile. His hand hovering near mine, waiting for permission.
His body beside me at night. His mouth against mine in the quiet morning.
His voice saying, "I don't know how to leave you anymore."
His final words before the Remnant nearly took him. "I love you, Valentina."
Aurelia opens her arms. "Give it to me."
I open my eyes. "No."
Her smile falters. "Your anger belongs to the sovereign heart."
"My anger belongs to me." The little girl steps beside me. Her hand finds mine.
One trapped flame brightens, a woman emerges from it.
Silver scars cover her face. White fire burns beneath her skin.
She looks at Aurelia with hatred old enough to become calm.
Another flame brightens, a boy steps free.
Then another woman. Another child. A man carrying burn marks around his throat.
One by one, the previous Starborne leave their prisons.
Hundreds, thousands form behind me. Not kneeling, standing.
Aurelia turns slowly. For the first time, fear touches her face. "You are mine." No one answers.
She lifts one hand. The white world obeys. Chains of fire erupt beneath us. They wrap around the Starborne. Around the child beside me. Around my wrists. Aurelia pulls. The flames bow.
A woman near the front raises her head. "We were never yours."
The words spread. Never yours. Never yours. Never yours. Thousands of voices.
The white world fractures. Aurelia's crown flickers. Outside, the black-red pulse comes again. Stronger. One heartbeat. Valerius.
I laugh. The sound surprises me. Aurelia recoils. "You were never a queen," I say.
Her face twists. "I built the first order."
"You demanded obedience." I step forward. The chains around my wrists strain. "You demanded fear." Another step. The chains crack. "You demanded sacrifice."
The Starborne behind me move, all of them. Not toward Aurelia, towards me. Their light pours forward. Not power. Memory, choice, every refusal, every act of love she failed to understand, every person who stood while she demanded they kneel.
Aurelia raises both hands. The white world erupts. "You are alive because of me!"
"No." I stop directly in front of her. "I am alive despite you."
Her eyes widen.
I reach for the sovereign heart inside her chest. It appears beneath my hand. A white-gold star wrapped in silver thorns. The same key my father guarded. The same mark branded into me. The centre of every life Aurelia stole.
She grips my wrist. "You cannot destroy me without destroying yourself."
"Maybe." Her smile returns. Then I smile too. "But I don't walk alone."
The Starborne behind me place their hands against one another. A chain of light. The little girl touches my back. Warmth floods through me. Not Aurelia's Starfire. Ours. Every stolen soul. Every buried piece. Every part of me she locked away. I pull. The sovereign heart tears free.
Aurelia screams. The white world collapses.
Sound returns. The courtyard roars back into existence.
Stone falling. Students crying. The Eternal Flame screaming through the sky.
I open my eyes. I'm on my knees. Valerius lies several feet away.
Smoke rises from his chest where my blast struck him.
Professor Vale kneels beside him, hands pressed over his heart.
My mother holds his head. Eli stands frozen nearby, lightning gone from his hands. Luc's eyes are closed.
"No pulse," Professor Vale whispers.
The words destroy the air. My mother sobs. Eli drops to his knees. The Ancient Masters remain bowed beneath the Flame. Voss smiles. Aurelia still stands inside my body but she's dying. I feel her tearing apart beneath my skin. The sovereign heart pulses once. Wildly and unstable.
Valerius's body jerks.
A black spark flickers over his chest. Professor Vale gasps. Another spark. Shadowflame, small and weak but alive. One heartbeat strikes through the bond. Then another.
Valerius inhales. The sound is broken. Barely a breath but it's enough. "Move," I say.
Professor Vale looks up. My voice is mine, fully mine. My mother sees it. Her face collapses with relief. "Valentina?"
I push myself upright. Pain tears through me.
The sovereign heart is cracking inside my chest.
Aurelia's death is destroying the vessel with her.
