Chapter 11

Astoria

As I awakened to the light filtering through the window, a whisper of warmth washed over me, a sensation I almost didn’t recognize.

The morning in Portland felt crisp, fresh, and impossibly full of potential.

I held my breath for a moment, afraid to chase away the hope blooming within me, a small yet defiant bloom amongst the cautious, familiar fronds of my herb garden waiting just beyond my bedroom door.

The garden had always been my anchor, each leaf and stem a reminder of my place in the world, a position built on stability.

Basil, mint, thyme… the scents mingled with the promise of the new day, each plant telling a story of the past as I watered them just before dawn.

There was something soothing in the repetition of it all: the soil damp beneath my fingers, the steady rhythm of care. My world thrived in this routine.

Yet, a thought flickered uninvited. What if this comforting space held me back from something greater?

The intimacy of my garden whispered of safety, but I felt an underlying tension that hinted at the fragility of it all.

If I left for the stars, what would I give up?

Would I relinquish the sanctuary of my herbs, the part of me that knew how to stay, and the very identity that defined my existence as the one who holds the door for others?

I plucked a few mint leaves, the sharp scent cutting through the ambivalence swirling in my chest, and closed my eyes.

Could I leap into the unknown? It was the idea of Azyr that caused my heart to race; I imagined what it would be like to look out into a vast universe and share that view with him.

In my mind, I traced the shape of his presence, the way his skin shifted colors in the light, a landscape of cerulean depths blurring into silver-grey as he moved.

Could we stand on the edge of a metaphorical cliff together, longing to jump, yet tethered by unseen fears?

The distance between us felt daunting, an uncharted territory of vulnerability and want.

I caught myself grappling with the knowledge that his route, while part of a charted cosmic journey, remained shrouded in secrets I had yet to uncover.

The silence left by his unasked questions twisted like roots, burrowing deep into my own heart.

Returning to the present, I set the mint down and turned toward the window.

A cool breeze slipped through, ruffling the curtains, inviting my thoughts to wander further.

If I dared to imagine what life would be like if I took that leap with Azyr, would I find new purpose among the stars, or would I suffer the terror of abandonment that haunted the depths of my being?

Every farewell I had orchestrated, every moment spent bidding someone adieu, weighed heavily upon my thoughts.

I had counseled countless souls as they took steps into the unknown, yet I found myself hesitating at the threshold of my own life’s decisions.

The thought crept in, tender yet bold, seeking to shatter the confines of the terrarium I had built around myself.

That moment lingered, even as I pulled myself away from the wistful thoughts.

My hands moved deliberately as I watered the remaining herbs, a well-practiced routine serving to ground me amidst the uncertainties unfolding within.

The herb garden I tended held a parallel to my own existence: beautiful yet trapped by the barriers I had created.

Still, I found myself unable to cast away the burgeoning hope sprouting in my heart.

I refused to shut the door on Azyr or on the possibility that perhaps, just perhaps, something greater awaited beyond the horizon.

Even now, I was teetering between worlds, a foot in both places…

the steadfast caregiver and the daring dreamer I was still discovering in myself.

As I embraced the morning with newfound intention, I felt my heart pulse with the unnamable connection I held with Azyr.

It felt like walking a tightrope between risk and safety, balancing the desire to leap and the instinct to stay rooted.

The flickering candle of hope, even when accompanied by uncertainty, ignited a strength I didn’t know I possessed.

I turned my back on the window and made my way through the quiet moments of the apartment, finding myself overwhelmed by the reality of my routine.

I stopped, at last, gazing once more at the little vibrant garden I had grown so carefully, the plants thriving under my care.

They taught me that nurture required faith…

not only in what I had, but in what could still be, should I choose to take that leap and follow the horizon.

Azyr of Veyathi

I awoke to the echoes of my purpose weaving through the dimly lit space I had temporarily made my own.

The gravity of my choice to remain here pulled at me as I washed the sleep from my eyes, each breath reinforcing the weight of uncertainty that coiled around my heart, reminding me of the journey still ahead.

Astoria’s herb garden beckoned me as I moved through the small apartment, the scents wrapping around me in a warm embrace.

I had spent the previous days immersed in her world, absorbing every aspect of this fragile life that felt strangely foreign yet exhilaratingly inviting.

I glanced out the window and saw the early morning light filtering through the clouds, bathing Portland in a soft glow, a stark contrast to the deep blue lingering in my skin.

Yet, there was something far more significant waiting for me today.

As much as I found solace in my evolving bond with Astoria, I couldn’t shake the urgency buried within me, a desire to revisit the transit records, to understand what had been left unexamined.

I sensed shadows lurking in the corners of our work together, hidden anomalies that begged to be unearthed.

I found her at her desk, poring over files, the quiet rhythm of her pen moving against the pages a melody I had grown accustomed to. “Astoria,” I began, and she looked up, her eyes brightening in a way that sent a rush of warmth to my fingertips. “Could we review the transit records again?”

She paused, brow furrowing slightly as the unexpected request hung in the air. “Why? Is there something you feel we missed?”

“Yes.” I leaned in closer, aware of the tension I carried in my chest. “Something is still bothering me, and I believe we should not ignore it.”

Her expression shifted as the corners of her mouth tightened. I could sense the mix of apprehension and understanding; my request resonated with her professional instincts. She nodded, setting the papers down with determination. “Alright. Let’s dig deeper.”

Together, we sifted through the data, scrutinizing each line of text, each entry a potentially crucial piece of the puzzle.

As the minutes passed, I felt her focused energy entwine with mine, an unspoken connection fueling our efforts.

We delved into transit details that once seemed mundane; now they bore the weight of urgency and uncertainty.

Each decision was a new discovery, revealing unsettling patterns that skated on the edge of horror.

“Here,” I said, tapping a line on the screen where an entry caught my attention. “This waypoint… it should not be here.”

Astoria’s gaze followed mine, her brow furrowing further. “This… it seems impossible.”

As I examined the entries, the evidence stacked in an alarming progression. The departures, including those of the women I had sent through, revealed extended travel times and impossible waypoints, missing data entries that didn’t align with the protocol we’d established.

A wave of dread crept in as realization settled between us. “There is a systemic issue with the transit routes,” I voiced, my heart racing. “We may have been blind to an unmonitored authority that controls the routing of women we believed were safely matched.”

“No,” she breathed, her hand unconsciously clutching her collar as if the truth threatened to choke her. “It can’t be…”

But the cold terror of reality pressed down around us.

As we continued sifting through the records, the fear surged within my chest, rooted in a gut-wrenching sense of accountability.

The faces of those women flitted through my mind, each one I had counseled and sent off with hope now suffocated by the potential nightmare unfolding before us.

The silence became oppressive as we confronted the implications, Astoria’s resolve undulating with the heavy weight of responsibility. I sensed her unraveling as the realization struck. This could tear apart everything she had built in her commitment to guide others.

“Astoria,” I said softly, searching her eyes for reassurance, yet finding only turmoil mirrored back at me. “If we do not address this, we risk sending people into a trap we cannot see.”

Her expression shifted as the truth began to crystallize, eyes glistening with the sudden flood of emotion threatening to spill over. “I can’t... I can’t let this happen. They deserve to know the truth, Azyr.”

I nodded, understanding the gravity of our resolve. This was more than just another case file; this was the lives we had attempted to change with care. The dread morphed into a fierce sense of duty, the purpose pushing against the fear as we leaned into the darkness ahead.

“Together,” I vowed, feeling the strength of her determination merge with mine, “we will confront this. We will uncover what has been lost.”

As we sat there, with the weight of accountability pressing down on our shoulders, I held on tightly to the hope that we might still find a way to right the wrongs I had unwittingly become part of.

I wanted to believe in the stars, in the possibility of change, and that maybe I could navigate this world alongside Astoria, not only as a cartographer but as someone who finally understood the true importance of rooted connections.

With each discovery and each shared glance, we held onto the fragile tether binding our intentions. We would uncover the truth together and carve a path toward the stars for those who had gone quiet before the leap.
