Chapter 17
Astoria
I often felt as though my life was encased within a sealed terrarium, each carefully curated layer providing warmth and nourishment yet leaving little room for breath.
I thought of my mentor, the echo of her ambitions merging with my own fears, each of us forging our paths while dreaming of ‘elsewheres’ we dared not chase.
Now, I sat surrounded by the truth of Maya’s letters, battling a growing understanding that the ‘easy no’ I’d allowed to govern my life could disguise itself as a choice.
As I reread her word, full of longing for freedom and adventure, my heart tugged at the memory of my mentor’s quiet assertions, always whispering to aspire for a life beyond my own creation.
Each passage came alive, spilling tales of resilience and the bittersweet acknowledgment of what it meant to leave one’s home.
She had bravely challenged the notion of staying just because it felt comfortable, inviting me to interrogate my own motivations.
Yet, as my fingers traced the familiar script, I realized I stood at the precipice of something far more profound than I had ever acknowledged.
What was I afraid of? Rooted deep in my own history was a fear of abandonment, of being left behind.
The tightly controlled world I had built, with its orderly schedules and steadfast routines, now felt like a prison.
I pictured myself and my mentor as two sides of the same coin: one yearning for the adventures beyond, while the other held fast, terrified of the unknown.
Each day spent holding those doorways open felt as though I was sacrificing my own desires for others to leap boldly ahead.
But those women, each of them tied to the exits I orchestrated, needed more than an escape route.
They needed the very acknowledgment of their worth, the exploration of their fear, and the chance to make informed choices, just as I now needed to examine my own.
I had navigated the process so carefully that I lost sight of what mattered most, my choices should stem from a place of authentic desire rather than a defensive response to vulnerability.
As I folded the letters and set them aside, the familiar sound of footsteps echoed down the hall, tugging me back into the moment.
I could hear Azyr moving quietly, his gentle presence setting the air afire in ways I could not explain.
When he stepped into the room, the burden of doubt shifted, replaced by an undeniable current of connection.
It filled the space like the scent of fresh herbs from my window garden, both comforting and disarming.
“Astoria,” he said, his voice wrapped in warmth that brushed against the tautness I carried in my chest.
I turned to meet his gaze, and the tension melted for just a moment, offering an unexpected clarity. But then, in a rush of vulnerability, I remembered my internal struggle, the growing weight of my mentor’s silence colliding with the opportunity to share a life I never dared to imagine.
“About what happened…” he started.
Before he could finish, I took a deep breath, diving into the vulnerability I had shunned for so long.
“Azyr, I…” I hesitated, my voice wavering as the thoughts tumbled together.
“I feel like I’ve spent so long trying to keep my feet firmly planted, running from the fear of losing anyone.
But now… the idea of exploring beyond this place… it frightens me more than I can say.”
His gaze never faltered, those ocean-blue hues shifting deeper as he leaned closer. “And that’s valid. It’s a truth you can hold while also considering what you truly desire. Your own easy no doesn’t have to be your final answer.”
He had not asked for forgiveness, nor sought absolution; instead, he remained solid, a beacon of support as I grappled with the torrent of emotion swirling in my mind.
Then something shifted, an ember of certainty igniting within me.
The echoes of Maya’s wisdom and my mentor’s shadows intertwined in my thoughts, drawing together to form a narrative I could finally embrace.
“Azyr,” I found my voice, resolute yet tender, “staying because of fear looks just like staying by choice. I can see that now. I need to find the courage to untangle these threads.” I opened my mouth to breathe in the air thick with possibility. “But how?”
He studied me with an intensity that made me feel both vulnerable and courageous. “I won’t pretend to have the answers. But together we can weave new possibilities.” There was a charged pause as he continued, “And that starts here.”
With a gentle motion, he pulled open the door to his case and began unpacking, laying out items meticulously, one by one, across the floor of my office.
His actions were grand yet unheroic, yet the implications struck deep.
As he revealed the contents—a few books on celestial navigation, a sleek mapping device, and his treasured sketches of worlds he had charted, the barrier between us dissolved, each object spilling his past, the parts of himself he had kept tucked away.
“Why… why are you doing this?” I asked, heart racing. “You can’t just—”
“Astoria.” His tone was steady, direct. “I canceled my survey route. I’ve filed for a reassignment here.
I’ll be here for six weeks while everything processes.
And I don’t expect forgiveness. I just need you to understand this is a choice I’ve made, for both of us.
” The resolve in his gaze washed away any doubt I might have harbored. “I am not leaving.”
I stood, frozen, as his gesture took hold of my heart, wrapping it in both trepidation and exhilaration. He was here. Here, with me, free of the shadows cast by expectations and burdens.
“What will we do in those six weeks?” I whispered, tears pooling at the corners of my eyes, the question barely formulated. I was trembling with the urgency of this realization, of what his presence could mean for our intertwined fates.
Azyr took a step toward me, gently closing the space, his own skin reflecting the shades of blue of profound resolve. “We will interrogate our easy no’s, find our real answers. Together. This is a chance to face the things we’ve kept from ourselves.”
I nodded, breath catching in my throat. Each moment felt like standing on the edge of a vast horizon, as though he had illuminated the path that lay beyond my terrarium.
Whatever lay ahead, I was ready to find it—to explore and create alongside him, forging new pathways unburdened by fear.
Together, we could make this new adventure, crafting it from the remnants of doubt and pain.
With the sight of Azyr unpacking on my office floor, I finally began to feel the stirrings of a choice made with intention, the chance to open the door and step into the unknown, hand in hand.
