Chapter 30 #3
Across the dome, Luna stabbed another two harpies, moving on to the next one. She left the yeti and orb to him.
When the harpy got close, Alsen released some power from the circle.
Up-cleave.
The energy cut the harpy in half, this time diagonally, so it lost direction, and its parts fell aside from Alsen, not splashing him with the freezing blood.
He figured Derell, Malick, and Kern could handle the other two harpies. So, instead of helping them, he fired another, more detailed magical scan.
The scan returned to him the details of the sphere’s otherworldly connection. Its energy on a part of its outer layer formed a membrane, through which most energy flowed to the physical world, but some connected to the spiritual layers.
He remembered its details.
But the yeti started preparing another spell, energies swirling around him. He couldn’t stand around and appreciate the intricacies of his scan’s results. So, he formed two motes of power.
Indirect missile. Times two.
These had precise targeting. They curved through the air, and blew up the two anchors of the sphere to his right. That left only the one straight behind it.
The sphere shook, disrupting yeti’s spell.
Alsen immediately fired another magical scan, a simple one, this time. He detected a harpy to his side, just as Luna ran her spear through it. The sphere returned chaotic, highly destabilized response.
It was about to blow up.
He needed to give it direction to not annihilate them.
Alsen raised his hand to the ceiling, molding another spell.
Lance of Annihilation.
This one pierced the ceiling straight above the sphere.
One big spell left in his tank.
He glanced at Luna. “Kill the yeti once the sphere is gone.” He didn’t wait for feedback.
With a swift turn, he threw an uppercut with outstretched fingers, releasing a spell with it.
Curved Cleave.
The energy slashed the air, severed the yeti’s arm that got in the way, and hit the sphere. The energy inside the sphere erupted, released upward in a massive torrent of energy.
Most of the ceiling disintegrated, the energy piercing through, up toward the sky.
As the yeti stared at his falling arm, Luna’s spear tip exited through his forehead. The yeti started collapsing.
Luna withdrew the spear while bolting toward the drakes.
Up above, Alsen saw the released energy reform. It twisted, shrank, and started reforming into the shape of a being.
Oh, no, he was not letting that happen.
Fly.
Upon the focused thought, motes of power formed underneath him, and propelled him upward. As he started flying up, he saw Luna jump on the drake’s back.
She landed on its spinal ridge, clenching her legs around its body. “Fly me up.”
“You must be out of your mind,” the drake growled. “I’ll tear—”
Luna stretched her leg, and rammed her heel into the drake’s loins. It grunted in pain. “Move.”
The drake twitched, trying to grab her. It didn’t have a way to reach its back. As she stretched out the leg again, it bolted forward before it got kicked again.
Alsen flew up through the ceiling. A gust of wind hit him so strongly it pushed his flight course a bit to the side.
The energy above him already coiled into a shape of a being. Or more like half of one. A massive torso, long arm, no lower body or head, yet, the energy swirling around them.
Omnidirectional shield.
The segmented bubble wreathed Alsen, blocking off the wind. By a quick look down, Arleria and her group were out of his sight, so out of direct blast range, covered by what remained of the mountaintop.
The drake Luna had mounted jumped out through the broken wall. It spread its wings, catching an updraft to start flying up.
“Woo hoo!” Luna shouted, no doubt to the pleasure of that drake.
With a smirk, Alsen focused on a spell. Whatever the being forming above him was, he saw no reason to wait for it. He pulled on his power, as much as he could, completely ignoring his body’s limits. The shield spell had enough power for a few minutes, as did the flight.
He focused the energy into two spheres, which quickly took shape to his sides. This time, he wasn’t in a dungeon or at close range, so he could cast the spell properly. He mapped the trajectory of the orbs in his mind, and flew a tiny bit back before he released the spell.
Twin Dawn of the Seventh Sun.
The two orbs erupted from his hands. They coiled around each other as they crossed the distance, spinning, accelerating. They hit each other straight in front of the being’s chest, exploding.
Alsen’s vision whited out for a split second. Then the shockwave hit. It slammed into his shield like a speeding train.
The shield blocked most of it before it popped, out of mana. The remaining force threw Alsen to the side, knocking the wind out of his lungs. The flying spell gave out, blown up by the shockwave.
He reached for his power to cast it anew.
Only cold answered him. No power left to use.
Fuck.
He spun through the air, his vision unable to focus on anything due to the rotations.
Someone caught his left arm. The force of the catch tore at him, yanking the shoulder out of its socket, almost tearing out the arm.
He slammed into a drake’s body, nearly passing out. He screamed with pain, as he realized Luna held him by his grotesquely stretched left arm.
Alsen’s vision blackened, barely seeing the drake turn, heading back for the mountain, carried up by an updraft of wind.
All the clouds above them were gone, only blue sky above them.
