Chapter 2 Bottom of the First

Bottom of the First

Godwin

I wanted to push Derby Ward up against a wall, any wall, not that there was one on the empty lot.

I wanted to fuck him hard, but he was a client.

I couldn’t tarnish my business that way.

Plus, I knew who Derby Ward was. Professional baseball player.

The hottest pitcher in the major leagues.

His long legs and lanky body did it for me.

I’d always been attracted to an athletic build on a man, and that was certainly Derby.

I’d actually been watching him since he’d played for the Crimson Tide and then his two years in the minors.

I was disappointed when Oakland pulled him, then benched him.

But he was back in the pros. And now standing in front of me with that flirty, boyish grin.

The sparkle in his eyes gave the impression that he was up to some sort of mischief, but nothing malicious or cruel—never that.

He was very Huckleberry Fin or Han Solo.

A little rebel, a little fun, but underneath there was a loving center.

At least, I hoped Derby had a good heart.

He seemed to with how much he wanted to do for his mother with the house, and that warmed my insides like hot cider on a cool evening.

And he was sexy as hell.

I distracted myself by checking over my notes. “I think I’ve got it. After the surveyor, we’ll pull the first permits, and I’ll get some floor plans to work with. Then we’ll need to meet again.” I couldn’t wait for that chance. “I’ll have a full budget by then.”

“Gotcha. I have a busy schedule, though. We have a few double headers coming up.” He sounded excited rather than frustrated about his tight schedule. “Here’s my assistant’s info. Call her if you need anything or to schedule appointments.” He pulled out his wallet and handed me a card.

“Sounds good.” I tucked her information between the pages of my notebook.

I didn’t want our meeting to end, but I had nothing else to say about the house.

Would we have anything else in common? I liked baseball but would he want to talk about his work?

It didn’t matter. He was a client, not a friend, and certainly nothing more than that, which made me scowl.

I wanted more from him, and I never wanted anything from anyone.

He was refreshing, energetic, and he made me feel like my battery was charged and ready to go, but there was nowhere to go with this.

“Okay then.” Derby smiled even brighter than before as if I’d even thought that was possible. His sandy brown hair was cut short, showing his adorable ears. Yep, Derby Ward was the total package from his long legs, sexy ass, and sculpted arms.

And he couldn’t ever be mine.
