CHAPTER 21

The Emperor remained secluded in his office, poring over reports and sealing edicts in quiet contemplation. Though the kingdom bustled in the aftermath of the dungeon incident, he spoke little, and watched more.

Meanwhile, the heirs, survivors of the dungeon, began exchanging letters, numbers, and even the occasional enchanted parchment. Friendships once unlikely began to bud in the shadow of shared trauma. Rivalries turned into mutual respect.

Sorayael and Zarethian, within days, returned to the quiet grandeur of the Aethenroth estate. The air smelled of sea salt and violets, and the skies above Aethenroth always seemed a little more golden than elsewhere.

When Krios, the youngest Aethenroth, heard of his sister's return and of the tale whispered across the empire, he wasted no time.

Sorayael didn't wait for him to reach the last step. She met him halfway with a smile and caught him in a hug, holding him close, grounding herself in the familiarity of his presence.

Zarethian, ever quiet, gave a half-wave and disappeared into his chambers. "I need sleep before I collapse."

And for a time, everything was peaceful.

One Week Later...

After their return to the Aethenroth estate. The sun shone gently across the marbled courtyards, and the air carried a breeze that spoke of home.

Then, while Sorayael was in the middle of her training, focused, her mana steady, a voice interrupted her from the edge of the field.

It was Jezha, her maid, holding out an envelope with the Nytheris crest wax-sealed in green.

She handed it silently.

Sorayael took it, brows furrowing.

She was invited to have a tea time with House Nytheris.

'Oh.. Ravelia huh?'

That was a facade.

In truth, it was a secret meeting held only among heirs of the noble states that survived from the dungeon.

The first time they had one, an oath of confidentiality was sworn by all present. A vow that whatever they talked about within those closed walls would never leave the room. Not even their retainers were allowed inside.

As Sorayael turned to prepare, Krios appeared by the doorway, watching her with hopeful eyes.

Krios grinned. "Yes!"

............

Later that day, the siblings stepped out together.

Sorayael wore a silver-hued gown that caught the light like falling stardust, making her pale hair shimmer and her golden eyes burn brighter. Simple, elegant but undeniably commanding.

Krios wore a sleek black suit lined with soft silver embroidery, his silver hair neatly brushed back. A touch of gold at his collar brought warmth to his look, regal and sharp, like a proper heir of Aethenroth.

And so, dressed in quiet power, the two made their way to the secret meeting that would, once again, gather the heirs under one roof-bound by oath, driven by purpose, and unknowingly shaping the future of their empire.

The drawing room of House Nytheris shimmered with soft candlelight and muted elegance.

High windows framed the late afternoon sun, casting long shadows across the polished floor.

At the center, a long oval table awaited the gathering of the empire's most important young blood-heirs from the major houses, each draped in prestige and subtle wariness.

Then the doors creaked open.

All eyes turned.

Sorayael entered first, silver gown flowing like stardust, every movement poised with quiet authority. Zarethian strode beside her in deep crimson, regal yet relaxed, an easy hand resting on the hilt of his sheathed blade. And between them, holding Sorayael's hand gently, was a boy.

Krios.

Dressed in a dark suit that brought out his bright golden eyes, his silver hair combed neatly, Krios was the image of delicate nobility. He stepped cautiously, unsure, until the others saw him.

Celene blinked. "Oh stars, he's adorable."

Karsen raised a brow, smiling. "Is he part of the meeting too?"

Kieran chuckled. "Looks like we're getting reinforcements."

Krios instantly hid behind Sorayael, shy. His hand tightened around the fabric of her sleeve.

There was a chorus of soft "ohhhs" and knowing nods.

They laughed softly, the ice breaking. The tension that lingered from the Crimson Gathering began to melt briefly.

When everyone settled, Sorayael was ushered to the center seat. No words were exchanged about it-it was simply understood.

Zarethian shook his head with a smirk but said nothing this time as he learned his lesson.

Ravelia stood. "Thank you all for coming again. Just like before, we're bound by the oath we made at our first meeting. Nothing said here leaves this room."

All nodded solemnly.

Celene's fingers traced the rim of her teacup. "The last letter my mother received from the palace was sealed with the Emperor's crest, and laced with magical locks. They're preparing."

Zarethian's voice was sharper than usual. "It's war. They're organizing for it. Whether outside the empire.. or within it."

Eyes turned to Sorayael. She looked calm but her eyes burned quietly.

Kieran nodded grimly. "Mine too. Except he doesn't hide it. He talks about 'the coming purge' in front of me."

Ravelia looked around. "They're consolidating power."

Zarethian leaned forward. "They're trying to divide us before we grow into something that can resist."

A hush fell over the room.

Then, in that silence, Krios, small, seated beside his sister, raised his hand just slightly.

The heirs blinked.

Celene leaned in. "But what can we do? We're heirs, not rulers. We're being watched."

There was silence again but this time, it buzzed with quiet resolve.

The heirs sat taller. Their eyes are clearer and wide awake.

And the room no longer felt like a gathering of nobles.

It felt like the spark of something greater.

A rebellion? A reckoning?

Perhaps both.

And though Krios didn't speak again, he quietly reached for Sorayael's hand under the table. She gave it a light squeeze.

He would not be alone in this.

None of them would. Not anymore.

As the sun dipped lower beyond the tall windows, shadows stretched across the floor like whispered warnings. The conversation had shifted from suspicions to subtle strategies-discreet routes of communication, trusted allies, symbols they could use to recognize one another even when watched.

It wasn't yet a revolution. But it was the beginning of a foundation.

Ravelia stood once more, placing a closed scroll on the table. "Each of us will take one. Enchanted with a minor concealment sigil. Burn it if you feel it's unsafe but memorize what's inside."

One by one, the heirs reached for the scrolls. Karsen tucked his inside his coat with a casual grin. Celene raised a brow at hers before slipping it into her sleeve. Kieran and Silas didn't speak but their expressions had grown sharper.

Zarethian leaned back in his chair, arms folded, but Sorayael could tell he was listening to every word.

Ravelia turned to Sorayael. "You'll lead the next one. They all trust you."

Karsen smirked. "You're terrifying. It's very effective."

Krios giggled beside her.

Sorayael exhaled softly. "Fine. But don't expect tea and pleasantries."

As chairs scraped gently against the floor, the heirs began to take their leave quietly and carefully. No fanfare. Just the tension of purpose and the promise that they would meet again.

Zarethian was last, waiting for Sorayael and Krios by the door.

Sorayael gave him a look.

He held up a hand in surrender. "Chill, I'm not teasing you. Just... impressed."

Krios tugged on his sister's hand. "Can we eat now? I'm starving."

Sorayael smiled for the first time that evening. "Let's go now."

And as the three stepped into the hall, the grand doors of House Nytheris closed behind them, not on a simple tea gathering, but on the quiet forging of an alliance that would one day shake the Empire.

They didn't look back.

But something had changed in each of them.

A spark had been lit.

And now.. it was only a matter of time to have the Empire's independence.
