CHAPTER 30
Morning sun crept through the jeweled windows of Sterella Academy, glinting off marble floors and glittering uniforms.
Sorayael walked with calm poise, the familiar footfalls of Zarethian beside her a constant presence.
Azi and Zacchaeus, of course, flanked her like rival moons orbiting a star, each subtly vying to hold her attention.
Behind them, Kieran, Celene, Silas, Karsen, and Ravelia blended into the crowd with trained ease, ears open, eyes sharper than any dagger.
Throughout the day, they moved like threads in a tapestry, never drawing too much attention but always weaving deeper.
In Elemental Theory, Celene struck a conversation with a wind-user heir from the Nievean clans.
In Combat Tactics, Karsen "accidentally" disarmed an upperclassman known to fraternize with the Ascendancy's enforcers.
Sorayael, meanwhile, spent the gaps between lectures observing from shadows, her fingers occasionally scribbling runes in her notes that had nothing to do with class and everything to do with power.
Classes passed. Eyes were watched and words were weighed.
And when the bell finally rang for dismissal, the group casually gathered, just like any group of friends might.
The smells of grilled mana-beasts and sweetbread drifted in the air. The seven of them took their usual long table by the balcony. Zacchaeus, as always, tried to sit beside Sorayael but Azi was already there, munching on fried roots and throwing him a cheeky wink.
Zacchaeus sighed, dragging his tray to the opposite side. "One of these days, I will sit beside her uninterrupted."
Zarethian raised an amused brow. "You two argue more than you gather intel."
Sorayael, calmly sipping her honeyed tea, muttered, "And louder, too."
Once finished, they each rose one by one, careful not to draw attention as they funneled out, never in a single group, but trickled like whispers toward their meeting spot.
When all were assembled inside, a faint shimmer marked the reactivation of their sound-proofing wards.
Sorayael pulled out a folded parchment and laid it on the old starmap table. "Two more heirs support the reform quietly," she said. "One is from the Verdancy Wards. The other... is under watch."
Valen's gaze briefly swept over the others before settling on her. "Then we act soon."
Sorayael nodded once. "Tonight, we reassign the maps. Tomorrow, we target the records vault."
Around the dusty chamber, solemn nods followed.
And as the stars rose over Sterella Academy, within that quiet, forgotten place, the beating heart of revolution pulsed stronger.
Tomorrow night...
Night fell upon Sterella like a silken veil. Moonlight slithered down spires and across quiet halls, unaware of the movement beneath.
Deep within the academy, beyond sealed corridors and gilded thresholds, the Vault of Holdings slept, silent, forgotten by most, yet filled with centuries of secrets the Empire would rather rot than reveal.
Forged centuries ago by the Archmages of the First Conclave, the Vault was designed to house the most sensitive documents of the Empire and the realms beyond: forbidden histories, bloodline secrets, arcane treaties, war records, and remnants of lost magics.
Its very walls are laced with memory-stone, capable of sealing knowledge away from time itself.
The entrance is veiled behind illusion and locked with a triune ward of blood, breath, and word, requiring the essence of a living heir, the signature of intent, and the utterance of a forgotten command.
Inside, the Vault is impossibly vast, its shelves shifting and breathing like a sentient archive.
Scrolls hover in glass casings. Tomes pulse with latent mana.
Glyph-sealed drawers hold relics unfit for daylight.
The air hums with containment wards that snuff out even the boldest scrying attempts. Magic is dulled inside the vault, not by suppression, but by reverence, as if the very air recognizes the gravity of what it guards.
It is said only the Bearer of Auctoritas can walk through the deepest chambers without resistance.
Few have dared. Fewer still have returned unscarred.
Until tonight.
A gentle shimmer rippled across the west courtyard as Sorayael, Zarethian, Karsen, Celene, Ravelia, Kieran, Silas, Azi, and Zacchaeus emerged from shadow, each cloaked in muted tones and their mana subtly masked.
Valen Merovane had secured their entry point.
They slithered through the halls like phantoms, each knowing their position.
Celene and Silas bent the ambient mana to cloak their steps, while Kieran and Ravelia peeled back low-tier runes with surgical precision. Karsen monitored their rear, ever-vigilant for patrols.
Azi and Zacchaeus walked behind Sorayael, still exchanging glares even during infiltration.
Silence.
They reached the Vault antechamber, a smooth obsidian wall with three embedded runes glowing faintly. Zarethian stepped forward, fingers brushing the surface as he activated the sequence he'd memorized from an old scroll.
Zarethian drew a small cut across his palm and pressed it into the first rune.
Celene blew a pulse of focused mana onto the second.
And Sorayael stepped forward to speak the final word.
The vault clicked, low, ancient, and slid open with a hiss, revealing shelves upon shelves of sealed scrolls, glowing sigils, locked boxes, and files bound in mana-thread.
They stepped inside.
Ravelia and Kieran moved to the historical manifest scrolls.
Silas and Celene took to the political alliance files.
Zarethian and Karsen headed to the war archives.
Valen were monitoring their surroundings.
Sorayael? She went straight to the sealed section, hand glowing faintly as she raised her palm. The sigils flared.
A whisper stirred in the air: "Auctoritas recognized."
Azi was right beside her.
Behind them, Zacchaeus was examining a box labeled "Ascendancy Failures - Redacted."
Then the vault suddenly trembled.
A subtle hum beneath their boots turned into an echoing throb, and the dim glyphs along the walls flared an ominous crimson. Sorayael's breath caught. "We triggered something."
Kieran cursed under his breath. "The movement wards.. someone knows we're here."
Scrolls flew back into containment. Doors hissed as if they were breathing. Silas conjured a quick illusion to cloak their presence, and Ravelia froze the archway behind them with a crystal barrier of ice just thick enough to buy time.
Footsteps clanged. Voices shouted.
Azi grabbed Sorayael's wrist. "This way, Feifei!"
They weaved through the winding, collapsing corridors of the vault, breathless, shadows flickering like specters at their heels.
Celene bent water into a spiral and rode it up a chute, pulling Karsen with her.
Kieran, still clutching a sealed tome glowing with red runes, kicked a pressure lock open just as the guards entered the outer hall.
They burst through the concealed door in the older archives, collapsing into silence, gasping for air.
They made it.
..........
Later, in the old library cloaked by time and nature, their meeting spot.
The group stood in a wide circle, faces illuminated by a faint blue orb hovering midair.
Silas placed the documents gently onto the stone table. "This... this is worse than we imagined."
Karsen's eyes narrowed. "What did you see?"
Sorayael stepped forward, her voice low but commanding. "The Empire's golden peace is built on blood and erasure. The Emperor, he's been silencing bloodlines tied to the original Constellation-bearers. There were purges. Whole families erased from history."
Celene looked pale. "Even my family..?"
Azi raised a brow. "Then with who?"
She looked up, eyes sharp, and a voice steady.
"With something he tried to bury. Something older than the Empire."
Meanwhile..
Far away, in the heart of the Imperial Sanctum...
A faint tremor. Barely perceptible, like a whisper in the fabric of magic. But to him, it was deafening.
The Emperor of the Aethelgard Imperium stood at the peak of his obsidian spire, overlooking the star-drenched horizon. His eyes, once dull with the weight of decades, snapped open, gleaming with a dangerous glint.
He felt it.
A shift.
An opening.
And the unmistakable resonance of Auctoritas.
His lips parted, breath slow. "She found it."
The warded chamber beneath Sterella, veiled in time and shielded with spells not even he could bypass-she had stepped into it. She had been acknowledged.
Not even he, the Emperor was permitted to cross that boundary. It was carved by the ancients and meant only for the bearer.
His gaze turned to the stars, which no longer looked down upon him kindly.
