4. Sorek

SOREK

Sorek understood, now, why warriors burned empires for their mates.

He had woken with Tamsin in his arms, her body curled against his in the narrow confines of his sleeping pallet.

She'd insisted on staying with him after what had happened in the garden, had followed him back to his chambers despite his protests about propriety and discovery.

"I'm not leaving you alone tonight," she'd said, and the certainty in her voice had made his heart crack open in ways he didn't know it could.

He had never shared sleep with another being.

Even as a child, before his training began, he'd kept to himself, more comfortable with solitude than companionship.

But lying there in the darkness with her warmth pressed against him, her scent filling every breath, her heartbeat slow and steady beneath his palm...

he had nearly wept with the rightness of it.

She stirred against him as the dawn bells chimed, her eyes blinking open with the confused softness of someone emerging from deep sleep. When she saw his face above hers, she smiled, and the expression hit him like a blow to the chest.

"You're staring again," she murmured.

"I'm memorizing." He traced the curve of her cheek with one careful claw. "In case this is the only morning I get to do this."

Her smile faded, replaced by something more serious. "What happens now?"

"The other Priests will know something has changed.

My markings..." He glanced down at his arm, where new patterns had begun to form overnight, gold and copper sigils shifting into configurations that indicated bonding.

"These cannot be hidden. When the Elder sees them, he will convene the council. "

"And they'll cast you out."

"Yes." The word should have felt heavier.

It should have carried the weight of thirty years of devotion, of everything he'd built his identity around.

Instead, looking at her, all Sorek could feel was certainty.

"I have already made my choice, Tamsin. I made it the moment I touched you in the garden.

Everything that follows is just consequence. "

She sat up, her hair tumbling around her shoulders in a dark cascade that made his cock stir despite the seriousness of the conversation. She was still wearing only her underthings, and the sight of her skin in the pale morning light made him want to trace every inch of it with his tongue.

"We could leave before the council convenes." Her voice was practical, but he could hear the undercurrent of fear. "Find a trading caravan, get off-world before they have a chance to—"

"No." He sat up beside her, taking her hands in his. "I will not run from this. The Priests deserve to know why I'm leaving, and I will not give them the satisfaction of calling me a coward."

"They're going to hurt you." Her grip tightened. "The ritual for removing markings... I've read about it. It's brutal."

"I know what it is." He'd witnessed it once, years ago, when a young acolyte had been caught stealing sacred artifacts to sell to collectors.

The screaming had lasted for hours. He'd spent three days in meditation afterward, trying to purge the memory.

"But I will face it with my eyes open, knowing what I chose and why. "

He expected her to argue. Instead, she leaned forward and pressed her forehead to his, breathing in sync with him for a long moment.

"Then I'll be there when it happens," she said quietly. "I won't look away."

The morning passed in a strange suspension of time.

They bathed together in his small washing chamber, learning the landscape of each other's bodies with soap and water and wandering hands.

She washed the ridge of fur down his spine and laughed when he couldn't suppress a full-body shiver.

He explored the curves and valleys of her softer form, cataloging every response with devoted attention.

They didn't make love. Not yet. Some instinct told him to wait, to save that final claiming for when they both understood exactly what it would mean.

But they touched constantly, unable to break contact for more than a few seconds, building a foundation of intimacy that felt almost sacred in its simplicity.

The council summons came at midday.

Elder Vethros himself delivered it, his aged face grave with something that looked almost like grief. He took in the sight of them together, Sorek in his ceremonial robes and Tamsin at his side in the clean clothes she'd retrieved from her quarters, and said nothing about propriety or scandal.

"The council convenes at sunset," Vethros said. "They will require your testimony."

"I know what they require." Sorek met his old teacher's eyes without flinching. "I will give it freely."

Vethros nodded slowly. "I will pray for you, Sorek. I have prayed for you every day since you told me what had happened. The suns have not answered, but perhaps they are listening."

After he left, Tamsin turned to Sorek with determination blazing in her eyes.

"We have until sunset. That's hours yet." She took his hands and drew him back toward his sleeping chamber. "I don't want to waste a moment of it."

He let her lead him, understanding what she was asking. Understanding that this might be their only chance to belong to each other before everything changed.

His chamber was dim, the windows covered against the afternoon sun. He lit a single meditation lamp, filling the space with warm golden light, and turned to find her already unfastening her clothes.

"Wait." He crossed to her, covering her hands with his. "Let me. Please. I want to unwrap you like something sacred."

She let her arms fall to her sides, watching his face as he worked each fastening with trembling fingers.

Her shirt slipped free. Her underthings followed.

And then she was bare before him, every curve and shadow revealed by the lamplight, and he had to lock his knees against the overwhelming urge to fall at her feet.

"Thank you," he whispered, the words inadequate for what he felt. "Thank you for choosing me. Thank you for staying. Thank you for letting me have this, even knowing what it will cost."

He guided her to his sleeping pallet and lowered her onto the thin mattress where he'd spent thirty years alone. His robes came off more quickly, his patience for cloth barriers exhausted, and then he was covering her body with his own, skin against skin from chest to thigh.

The sensation was almost too much. Every nerve ending lit up, firing pleasure signals so intense they bordered on pain.

His cock pressed against her stomach, already hard and leaking, and he had to stop, had to breathe, had to find some fragment of control or he would finish before they'd even begun.

"I want to make this good for you." His voice came out ragged. "I've thought about it constantly, planned what I would do, how I would touch you. But now that we're here, I'm afraid I'll be too fast, too clumsy, too—"

"Sorek." She cradled his face in her hands, forcing him to meet her eyes. "Stop thinking. Stop planning. Just feel."

She kissed him, slow and deep, and he let himself sink into it.

Let himself exist only in the press of her lips, the slide of her tongue, the way her body arched beneath him seeking friction.

His hands moved without conscious direction, relearning the territory they'd mapped in the garden, finding the places that made her gasp and moan.

He kissed down her throat, her collarbone, the soft swell of her breasts.

He took her nipple into his mouth and sucked, gratified when she grabbed his mane and held him there with a breathless "yes, like that.

" He moved to the other breast, lavishing it with the same attention, and her hips were rolling against him now, her wetness leaving slick trails against his thigh.

Lower. He needed to go lower. He needed to taste her again, needed to feel her come apart against his tongue before he buried himself inside her.

He kissed down her stomach, pausing to nuzzle the soft skin below her navel, and she spread her legs for him without being asked. The scent of her arousal was intoxicating, rain and musk and something entirely her own, and he pressed his mouth to her center with a moan he couldn't suppress.

He was better at this now. Not expert, but improved, remembering what she'd taught him in the garden.

He found her most sensitive spot with his tongue and focused there, varying pressure and rhythm based on the sounds she made.

Her thighs trembled against his shoulders.

Her hands fisted in the bedding. Her breath came in sharp gasps that built toward the crescendo he remembered from before.

When she came, he drank her in, lapping at the evidence of her pleasure until she tugged at his hair and pulled him upward.

"Now," she gasped. "I need you inside me now."

He positioned himself at her entrance, the head of his cock nudging against slick heat, and paused. "Once we mate, it's forever. Khorani bonds are biological. You will feel me always, even across distance. Are you certain—"

"I'm certain." She wrapped her legs around his waist, heels digging into his lower back. "I want everything. Give me everything."

He pushed forward.

The sound that tore from his throat was inhuman. A roar of pleasure and disbelief, of sensation so overwhelming it nearly whited out his vision. She was tight and hot and perfect, her body stretching to accommodate him, her walls gripping him like she never wanted to let go.

He held himself still, buried to the hilt, shaking with the effort of not moving. He was too close already. Every nerve screamed for release, for the completion his body had been denied for three decades. But he wanted this to last. He wanted to give her pleasure, not just take his own.

"Sorek." Her voice pulled him back from the edge. "Move. Please move."

He obeyed. Slow at first, shallow thrusts that let him catalog the sensation of sliding in and out of her.

The ridges along his shaft were swelling, subtle textures that rubbed against her inner walls and made her cry out with each stroke.

He watched her face like it held the meaning of existence, adjusting his angle until he found the spot that made her back arch off the pallet.

There. He focused there, hitting that spot with every thrust, building a rhythm that made the whole world narrow to the two of them.

Her nails raked down his back. Her body clenched around him in fluttering waves.

She was close, he could feel it, could feel the tension building in her like a storm about to break.

"Come for me," he growled against her throat. "Let me feel you."

She shattered. Her inner walls clamped down on him, rippling with her release, and the sensation triggered his own climax before he could even try to hold back. He came with a broken cry, spilling into her in hot pulses, his vision going white at the edges.

But it wasn't over. Even as the first wave crested, he felt something new building at the base of his cock. A swelling, a stretching, a pressure that he recognized from ancient texts but had never expected to experience.

His knot was forming.

"Tamsin." He forced the words out through gritted teeth. "Something is happening. My body is... there will be a swelling at the base. It will lock us together until it subsides. I can try to pull out before—"

"Don't you dare." She tightened her legs around him, holding him in place. "I want it. I want all of you."

The knot expanded slowly, nothing like the aggressive swelling he'd read about in warrior mating accounts.

His inexperienced body was adapting in real time, learning how to perform functions it had never been allowed to attempt.

When it finally locked into place, stretching her entrance until they were sealed together, they both moaned at the intensity.

He was coming again. Or still. He couldn't tell anymore.

Waves of pleasure crashed through him in an endless loop, and each pulse seemed to deposit more of his seed inside her.

He was embarrassed by the volume of it, by his body's desperate response to finally being allowed release, but she held him close and whispered encouragements against his ear.

"That's it. Give me everything. I can feel you filling me up. It's incredible."

His markings were blazing, new patterns forming across his skin even as the old ones shifted. He could see them reflected in her eyes: her name in Khorani script, winding around his heart like a chain he never wanted to break.

And beneath the physical pleasure, something deeper was taking root.

A bond. A connection. He could feel her now in ways that transcended touch.

Her satisfaction humming beneath his skin.

Her wonder at what they'd created between them.

Her fear of what came next, tempered by a determination that matched his own.

"I feel you," she whispered, eyes wide with amazement. "It's like you're... it's like you're inside my chest."

"Because I am." He pressed his forehead to hers, overcome by emotion. "Because you're inside mine. This is the bond. This is what it means to be mated."

They lay tangled together as the knot slowly subsided, their breathing gradually evening out.

When he finally softened enough to slip free of her body, he mourned the loss of connection even as relief flooded through him.

They had done it. They belonged to each other now, in ways that nothing could undo.

The sunset bells began to toll, distant but unmistakable.

Sorek pressed a kiss to Tamsin's forehead and rose from the pallet. His legs were unsteady, his whole body wrung out from the intensity of what they'd shared, but his mind was clear.

"It's time."

She caught his hand as he reached for his robes. "Sorek. Whatever happens out there... I'm not sorry. I'll never be sorry."

He brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles. "Neither will I."

They dressed in silence, the intimacy of the act another kind of bonding. He helped her with her fastenings, she smoothed the creases from his robes. When they were both presentable, he took her hand and led her toward the door.

The council waited. The consequences waited. A world without priesthood, without the identity he'd built over three decades, waited somewhere beyond this chamber.

But Tamsin's hand was in his, and her heartbeat echoed in his chest, and for the first time in his life, Sorek walked into an uncertain future without fear.

He had everything he needed right here.
