Chapter 12 Nyx
NYX
“Nyx!!!” I hear her squeal from her Jeep. She parks, and jumps out of the seat, running over to me and giving me a big hug. No matter that I just saw her a few days ago, she greets me the exact same way every time. A giant smile on her face and a big hug.
“Hey!” I try to show an ounce of her enthusiasm, but with everything running through my mind currently. I seem like I am not excited to see her.
“Okay, you need to spill. It looks like someone kicked your cat.”
“Hey, don’t put that kind of energy out in the universe! No one is kicking Midnight.” I gently slap her arm.
“It was just a phrase, Nyx. So let’s get a table so you can spill what’s got you so twisted up.” Walking into the familiar building, we are greeted by an older lady, Sheila according to her name tag, gray hair slicked back into a bun.
“Hello, girls. Just the two of you this afternoon?” Sheila asks.
“Yes, please. Can we get the booth in the front corner if it is open? It is our favorite table.” Kyra giggles.
Her blonde bob bouncing just above her shoulders.
I follow behind them while Sheila leads us over to our booth.
Sliding into the red pleather seats, she sets two menus on the table and leaves us.
“So, missy,” she gives me a look that means business. “What has you all twisted into knots? Lord knows you only work, so you probably haven’t met a boy.”
“Oh, you’re right there. I haven’t met a boy. I have met two and they are more men than boys.” I swear her jaw hits the table with a thud.
“Please clarify. You said two. As in one more than one? Like there is a boy A and a boy B?” She rambles out asking the same question in a million different ways, too many tabs open in the webpage and you can’t figure out where the music is coming from.
I wait for her brain to glitch out so I can explain myself.
“Kyra…Yes, you are correct. Two boys, as in one more than one. Their names are Graham and Demitri.” She is staring blankly at me. I am waiting for all of the information to compute.
“Wait, you only go to work and the gym. Where did you meet two men that are interested in you?”
“RUDE! What do you mean “interested in me”? That makes it sound like no one would be interested in me.” I snark at her. I know she didn’t mean it like that, but I have to give her shit. If I didn’t give her shit, we wouldn’t be us.
“You know what the fuck I mean.” She comes back at me.
“Well, technically I ran into Graham at Down Under Coffee, but officially met him at the station. They are helping the city with security for the Tigers home games this week. I am stationed with them as their police escort for the two games.” I give her the most basic details of our situation.
I don't want to worry her with the details from Nick yet.
“You ran into him? Please explain.”
“Niko handed me my coffee. I turned around to leave, and he was standing right there. He caught me so I didn’t fall on my ass, and then he got a phone call and I bolted. Where, I was then greeted with the presence of him, and his best friend as the security coordinators we are working with.”
“Girl, please tell me you are going to live the best female main character life and let them release some of that damn tension you are always carrying. You haven’t gotten laid since Nick and I still don’t think it was all that good.
” She sounds so excited, and I can’t help but to thrive off her vibes.
Her energy is infectious, and it doesn’t take long to remember exactly why I love being with her.
Kyra currently works for a local car dealership running their marketing department. It is a job that sucks the soul out of her, but she needs the money, so she stays with it. One day we will run a romance bookstore but for now we do what we have to do.
“That is the issue Kyra, I don’t know if I can open my legs to a guy, let alone my heart. Let’s not even talk about two guys.”
“Well, tell me about them. You said their names are Graham and Demitri, and they run a security company. What company? Would I have heard of them? What do they look like?”
“Okay, one question at a time. Yes, their names are Graham and Demitri. They are tall, delicious, muscular Marine men. They own Devil Dog Security. Graham also goes by Hutch. He is a few inches north of six foot five probably, a blonde Norse god chiseled out of stone. Blue eyes that could cause the next ice age. Demitri is his polar opposite, right around six foot five, chocolate brown eyes I could dip strawberries in, and black hair.”
“Please tell me one of them has a brother?”
“Well, I haven’t gotten to know much about them.” I blush, embarrassed that I am so fixated on two men I hardly know anything about. She looks at me with a blank face right before her face cracks into the biggest smile and then she starts laughing. “Hey, why are you laughing like that?”
“Oh, my sweet bestie.” She calms her laughing down enough to speak.
She rests her hands on top of mine, resting on the vinyl table top.
“I have never seen you like this. Not even when you met Nick. These guys must be a gift from God himself to have you in love already.” Oh, this bitch, in the best way possible.
“I am absolutely not in love with these guys I hardly know. Infatuated, sure, in love, no.” I say with more conviction than I actually feel.
“Okay, whatever you say, beautiful.” She ends the conversation with one statement and a smile, right before our lunch comes to the table.
We spend the next half hour eating our favorite meals, and gossiping about life.
Mike is doing his best to try and crush my girl's dreams, but thankfully she has me to remind her how amazing she is.
Time with her is exactly what we needed, both of us.
By the time we leave the diner, I feel a little lighter, her sunshine filling me with a sense of peace, and maybe, just maybe, I can at least hear the guys out.
