Chapter 87
***Ethan***
“You’re sure you didn’t see her talking to anyone who might
have upset her?” I ask.
“I’m positive. She was getting along with everybody.
Everybody loved her.”
“Thanks, but let me know if you remember anything, okay?”
“I will.”
That’s the tenth person I’ve spoken to already. They’ve all
said the same thing—everybody loved her. Maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree. The
Council. They’re the ones who were most against her from the beginning. I grab
my keys and decide to head out to my parents’ place. For the first time in a
long time, my mother greets me with a smile and a hug.
“Ethan! Come in, darling.”
“Mother. Where’s Dad?”
“He’s in the study. Is something wrong?”
“I need to speak with you both.”
Her smile fades and her brows furrow in worry. “I’ll get him.”
When they enter the living room, my father has the same
worried look.
“What’s going on, son?”
“I’ve been trying to find out what happened to Casey the
night of the barbecue.”
“Not her again!” Mother exclaims. “I thought you moved passed
this, Ethan.”
“Did either of you say something to upset her?”
“No, we got along fine,” Dad answers. “She’s a nice girl.”
I raise a brow at my mother, waiting for her reply. She
looks down at her nails in disinterest.
“I didn’t even speak to her that day.”
“Did you see her talking to anyone who may have said
something?”
“No, son. Is she all right?” Dad asks.
“I’ve only been able to get bits and pieces from her, and
that was only when she was drunk. She just keeps telling me that she did it for
me and that she’s not good enough for me.”
“Well, she’s right.”
“Mother.” I give her a warning glare.
“Don’t ‘Mother’ me. You gave your word. You need to
concentrate on Shae now. She’s your future.”
“I said I would court her, and I am. I can’t force something
that’s not there.”
“You wouldn’t have to if you forgot about the tramp.”
“Helena!” Dad yells.
I’m out of the couch and in front of her before I can even
think. I stand over her, breathing heavily, my fists balled in anger.
“Ethan… Watch it.”
The sound of my father’s voice reins me in just a little,
and I remember that she’s my mother.
“Don’t you dare call her outside her name again! Understand?”
“Don’t you dare talk to me like that. Alpha or not,
I’m still your mother!”
“And that’s the only reason why I’m giving you a verbal
warning.”
“Ethan, you need to cool off.”
I nod to my dad and try to keep my anger in check as I walk
out. If I don’t, I might end up doing something I’ll regret.
