Chapter 52

Chapter Fifty-Two

Noah took the shortcut onto the Larson property, pushing past tree branches. The Larsons’ driveway and the side of the house appeared. All the windows were dark, but he thought he saw a faint light glowing inside.

Chase tapped Noah’s shoulder and pointed. A sedan was parked in front of the house.

And a body lay on the concrete, surrounded by a pool of blood.

Bitter acid rocketed up in his throat. Then he noticed how the moonlight caught the woman’s hair.

Red. It was Lindley Colter.

Chase had already called for backup on their way here, which would include paramedics. Noah’s team couldn’t render aid until their target had been neutralized. But he imagined they couldn’t do much for Lindley, given the loss of blood.

He signaled for Chase to take his left flank, and Rex the right.

Noah dashed out of the cover of the trees. He reached the side of the house and flattened himself against the stucco wall.

At a window, Noah looked for alarm sensors. He tried pushing the frame open. It didn’t budge.

The room inside appeared to be an office. Through an open door, he could see a dim light. It was like a computer screen, coming from somewhere else in the house.

He pressed his ear to the glass.

Voices.

They were close.
