Chapter 23 Heidi
HEIDI
Three months. Three long ass months I had to be away from my man.
Yeah, the calls were very much still intact, but it didn’t help a darn thing.
I was emotional as hell and sick as a dog.
I missed him and no one knew how bad that shit was effecting me.
It was crunch time for Lincoln at school with all his tests and he had to focus.
Not to mention, I couldn’t go a day without vomiting.
Sitting on the doctor’s table, I patiently waited for Dr. Bloom to walk into room. The nurse took care of the basics now I was just hoping and praying she brought back some kind of antibiotics or something. A chick couldn’t even eat good without calling earl.
Knock, knock!
“Finally,” I mumbled.
The door opened and in she walked. “Hi, Heidi. I was not expecting to see you here until later this year. What seems to be the problem?” she asked trotting over to the sink to wash her hands.
She was already working my nerves, and she’d done absolutely nothing to me yet. She pulled a stool up to the computer ready to start typing. Dr. Bloom was too bright for me sometimes. I hated that, especially when I was in a dull mood.
“I’ve been nauseous as I don’t know what lately. I can’t eat and when I do, it’s right back up. I think I have a bug, but it won’t seem to go away,” I explained. She gave a light chuckle before she turned around and pecked on her keyboard. “What?”
“We know that your menstrual is irregular, but can you think on when your last one was?” she inquired.
I knew what she was insinuating, and pregnancy was off the table. I had sex one time, and that was months ago. Bentley and I barely left the room that day, but we didn’t do too much of anything for real. I couldn’t have been a human incubator right now… could I?
“Uhm, I’m not sure. Dr. Bloom, I’m not pregnant. I’d know if I was pregnant,” I snapped.
“Oh, really? You’ve been pregnant before?” she questioned.
“No, but I know my body,” I threw back.
She scoffed as she pecked once more. She then stood and walked over to the cabinets. She handed me a urine cup and said, “I need a sample beautiful, so we can rule out pregnancy altogether.”
“Dr. Bloom, I’m not pregnant,” I repeated.
Throwing her hands up, she waved them subtly saying, “Hey, I believe you… but humor me. You know where the bathroom is.” She pointed to the one in the back of the room.
Hopping down off the table, I took the cup from her and entered the restroom.
This in fact was going to be quite comical if this thing came back positive.
Sex made you do and say some crazy things.
I would’ve let that man do anything he wanted during that time.
I had to watch what the hell I said sometimes.
I handled my business placing the cup in the metal window on the wall. I then washed my hands and was back out to finish talking to Dr. Bloom. She looked at me and smirked. It was clear she knew more than she was telling.
“So, let me go test your urine, and I’ll be back with a result. In the meantime, think really hard on when that last period was,” she said before walking out.
I grabbed my cell out my purse and called First Lady. I had to admit that I was terrified on what the results were. What if I really was pregnant? What if this child wasn’t wanted by the father? What the hell was I going to do?
Yeah, right. Who was I kidding? This man was crazy about me, crazy about Lincoln, and he was an Atkins. I might as well accept my fate.
She answered with, “Baby girl, it’s been too long. How are you and Lincoln?” She didn’t give me time to say too much of anything before her questions started.
“First Lady it’s only been two weeks. I had previous engagements I couldn’t get out of. Nevertheless, Lincoln and I are fine. Thank you.”
“That’s good to hear. So, what made you call? Is everything alright?” she asked with concern.
Nodding, I said, “Yes ma’am, just checking in. I was wondering if I could get your opinion on something.”
“Of course. Hit me,” she said enthusiastic to hear my troubles.
One thing about First Lady, she was going to always have an ear. I loved that she didn’t tell my business, but I was sure she was going to tell this. This was probably news she couldn’t wait to share.
“There’s a friend that could be pregnant, and sh—”
“Oh, my heavens. Heidi, are you pregnant? Let me call David. He’s going to love this,” she squealed.
“First Lady. I didn’t say I was pregnant.”
Dr. Bloom walked through the door with a smile on her face saying, “You should be. Heidi, you are indeed pregnant. Congratulations.”
“Baby girl, let me call you back. I have got to call David,” she said hanging up the phone.
I delivered Dr. Bloom a death glare. She was excited for me, I understood that. However, she didn’t have to say it. I would’ve preferred to be left in the dark actually. This was what happened when your OB/GYN was on the roster as one of the family doctors. She was too close.
“Are you sure Dr. Bloom?”
“I’m a hundred percent sure. You can’t tell me the last menstrual, but can you tell me the last time you had sex? That might be helpful,” she said pulling forth a different monitor.
There wasn’t thinking on that long at all. It had been exactly a ninety-six days since I last saw my man. “Three months ago,” I answered.
“Okay, so a stomach reading should do. Lay back and lift your shirt for me.” I followed her instructions nervously. She’d already confirmed it verbally but if I saw a child on that monitor, I was going to cry.
Sliding her stool over, she took a seat and went to pecking.
When she was ready to do her thing, she applied the warm gel to my stomach, and I’d be damned if a little nugget wasn’t on the screen.
My hands flew to my mouth. Bentley managed to get a two for one special. He got his woman and a child out of me.
Dr. Bloom’s smile stretched from ear to ear. She couldn’t contain her excitement. “Congratulations Heidi. I’m so happy for you. To witness this after knowing your struggle behind motherhood is such a blessing. You are going to be an amazing mom,” she encouraged.
“Thank you,” I whispered as the tears streamed. There was no denying what I could clearly see in 4K.
For the rest of the visit, I thought on everything that transpired for the past year.
I found myself again, a beautiful baby boy walked into my life, that wonderful man showed up with overflowing love, and now this.
Before walking out the doctor’s office, I gathered the mother to be package from the receptionist. It consisted of prenatals and a lot of other useful information.
Once I was in my car, I called Royce to see where he was. Royce was my stamp of approval in a way, as well as the one that shielded me from the world. Without him, there was no telling where I would be. I respected his opinion a lot. This was just something else for us to get through.
“Yeah,” was how he answered.
“Where are you? I need to talk for a minute.”
“Downtown, why?”
“Meet me at my hideout in fifteen.”
“Bet.” Conversations with Royce could either be long or short and straight to te point. There was no need in keeping him on my line for long when the conversation ahead was going to be time consuming.
The drive from A Woman’s Touch to the downtown area was going to take all of those fifteen minutes.
It was around lunch, so the eight-minute drive was extended due to traffic.
Sage Springs was so predictable in that one area only.
By the time I bobbed and weaved through it, I was catching Royce enter my lounge.
I parked behind his vehicle and scurried inside.
“Hey boss lady. I wasn’t expecting you until later. Is there something I can get you?” Mariah questioned. She was the manager and HBIC when I wasn’t around.
“Yeah, can you get me and Royce something to drink? A refresher of your choice is fine and bring it to the quiet room.”
“Yes ma’am.”
With that, Royce and I trailed behind one another to a spot I put in the back for those who wanted stillness. It was soundproof so there was no worries of my good news being told to the world. I took a seat on the sofa while he took the recliner in the corner.
“Don’t sugarcoat shit with me. What’s wrong?” he asked, not giving me a chance to ease into a thing. But hey, if that’s how he wanted to play it, so be it. We could get straight to it.
“I’m pregnant, it’s Bentley’s, and I don’t know what to do,” I blurted out. If he was going to scold me, I’d rather him do it all at once and not after each reveal.
He said nothing as he stared at me like I stole his damn dog or something. I was just as shocked as he was. Dr. Bloom had told me over an hour ago, and it had yet to settle in. I was wrapping my head around it as fast as a girl could.
It felt like an eternity passed by us before he spoke, but when he finally did, I was still at lost for words. “So, when you moving?”
“Huh?” I asked expressing confusion.
“I spoke to that nigga several times, and he made it very clear that Sage Springs wasn’t gon’ ever have him as a resident. So again, when you moving?”
Chuckling, I said, “Royce, I don’t why you got that in yo’ head all of a sudden, but I’m not leaving my home.”
