Chapter 39
Noah
" S tay at Savannah Lace," I told Stella when the shit hit the fan. "We have photographers around our house."
"Noah, they say you're going to get arrested for blackmailing a senator."
There was panic in her voice.
"Baby, that's not going to happen. I need you to stay calm."
The news was out. The truth about the video had been revealed. Our sham engagement, the video made to bribe Senator Hunt…all of it. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other reputable beacons of journalism had only reported that there were rumors about Senator Hunt being blackmailed and calls from various politicians to have the FBI investigate me and her father.
"Calm?" I screeched. "You can't go to jail."
"Sweet, I did do what they accused me of."
"Stop it. You want to make it work between us?" I loved passionate Stella, and the fact that she was defending my sorry ass made me feel great and awful all at once. Great that she was with me, awful that she had to support me.
"You know I do."
"Then we rewrite the past. We stick to what we told Delilah Rae. Do you think the FBI will want to talk to me?"
"If there's an investigation, that would happen, but we'll make sure you're protected."
"That's fine. I'll stick to our story."
"Sweet, you can't lie to the FBI, you understand? It's a crime."
"I'm not going to lie. I'm going to tell the truth that I'm in love with you, that you made a video of us having sex for personal reasons, and your ex-girlfriend leaked it out. They should go after Eden's ass."
"If they're going to investigate and talk to people…it's going to come out," I warned her. "The only good news is that it will ruin your father's reelection chances. Actually, that could make up for me going to prison."
"This is not funny, Noah," she screeched.
"I know, babe. I have my lawyers here, and I've got to talk to them. I'm going to make sure you have a law firm taking care of you."
"Nina already took care of that," she mumbled.
"Who?"
"Theo Boseman."
"Fuck no."
"Why? He's perfect."
"He's handsome and single," I muttered. Damn, Nina, didn't she know any old men or female lawyers.
"Noah, focus on staying out of jail, yeah?"
"Baby, I have to go."
"Noah?"
"I love you, Sweet."
