CHAPTER 5 — “Rot and Ruin”
The Fungal Caverns smell exactly like you’d expect something called “Fungal Caverns” to smell.
Which is to say: bad. Aggressively bad. The kind of bad that crawls into your nostrils and sets up permanent residence, making you question every life decision that led you to this moment.
It smells like a troll’s armpit, Johnson observes from his perch on my shoulder. If the troll had died. In a swamp. Three weeks ago.
“That’s… vivid.”
I have a gift for description.
We’re standing at the entrance to Floor 2, the transition point where clean stone gives way to something organic and pulsing.
The walls down here are covered in fungal growth—thick patches of gray and purple and sickly green, some of it glowing faintly, all of it wet-looking in a way that makes my skin crawl.
I’ve cleared Floor 1 twice more since that first desperate run. Regular maintenance, Granny Thorn called it. Keep the spawn rate down, keep the village safe, keep leveling. I’m at Level 5 now, which is still pathetic by any reasonable standard, but significantly less pathetic than Level 1.
Progress. That’s what we’re calling it.

" │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The mana recovery rate is climbing. Slowly—too slowly—but climbing. Every time I clear a floor, every time I push deeper into my own dungeon, more of my stolen power trickles back through whatever connection the Mary Harvest created.
Dario is going to wake up tired one of these days and not know why.
Good.
Focus, Johnson says. You’re doing that thing again.
“What thing?”
The murderous brooding thing. It’s very dramatic, but it’s not helpful when we’re about to enter a floor full of poison mushrooms and screaming fungi.
“Screaming fungi?”
Floor boss. Sporomother. She screams. It’s unpleasant. His ear twitches. I’ve been watching this dungeon for a long time, remember. I know what’s down here.
“And you didn’t think to mention the screaming part earlier?”
I thought it would be a fun surprise.
“I hate you.”
No you don’t. I’m delightful.
I step into the Fungal Caverns, and the smell hits me like a physical force.
The first thing I notice is the moisture.
Everything is damp down here. The walls weep condensation, the floor squelches under my feet, and within five minutes my clothes are clinging to my skin in ways that are deeply uncomfortable. The air itself feels thick, like I’m breathing through a wet cloth.
The spores, Johnson explains. The whole floor is saturated with them. Most are harmless—just make you cough, irritate your eyes. Some are… less harmless.
“Define ‘less harmless.’”
Paralytic. Hallucinogenic. Necrotizing. The fun stuff.
“Necrotizing spores. Fun.”
I said ‘stuff.’ Not that the spores themselves are fun. Keep up.
I move carefully, [Herb Sense] working overtime to identify every fungal growth I pass. Most of them are exactly what Johnson said—irritants, mostly, unpleasant but not dangerous. But every so often the skill flags something nastier, and I give those patches a wide berth.
The creatures on this floor are different from the goblins.
Instead of crude intelligence and pack tactics, I’m dealing with things that barely qualify as alive.
Fungal constructs, the System calls them—mushroom-shaped bodies animated by dungeon mana, shambling through the caverns with no apparent purpose beyond existing.

" │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The first shambler I encounter doesn’t even notice me until I’m three feet away. It turns slowly—everything about these things is slow—and I have time to line up a solid hit to its cap before it can react.
The impact is… squishy. Disturbingly squishy. My improved club (crafted from the goblin chief’s cleaver handle and some scavenged materials) sinks into the mushroom flesh and comes out covered in something that smells worse than the ambient air, which I didn’t think was possible.
The shambler staggers, releases a cloud of spores, and I’m already moving—holding my breath, eyes squeezed shut, swinging blindly at where I know it has to be.
Two more hits. Three. Something gives way with a wet crunch, and when I open my eyes, the shambler is a pile of twitching fungal matter on the cavern floor.
Elegant, Johnson says from somewhere behind me. He’s found a relatively dry rock to perch on, watching the fight with obvious amusement. Really showcasing those Archmage combat skills.
“I’m a healer. Not a combat class.”
You were an Archmage. The most powerful battle mage on the continent. And now you’re beating mushrooms to death with a stick. His nose twitches. How the mighty have fallen.
“Thank you for that perspective.”
I live to serve.
I check the corpse—if you can call it a corpse when it’s still twitching—and find something useful: a small node of crystallized fungal matter near what might have been its brain.

Spore Essence. Useful for crafting, potentially. I pocket it and keep moving.
The next two hours are a masterclass in disgusting combat.
I fight seven more shamblers, each one leaving me covered in a new layer of fungal residue.
I find clusters of glowing mushrooms that [Herb Sense] identifies as valuable—[Glowcap], good for alchemical luminescence, and [Mindmoss], which apparently has mild psychic properties that I’m not touching with a ten-foot pole.
I also find the first real danger of the floor: a patch of [Deathcap] growing in a side passage.

" │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
I give the Deathcap a wide berth, marking its location mentally for later. If I ever develop poison crafting—and given my trajectory, I probably will—that’s going to be useful.
You’re thinking like an assassin, Johnson observes.
“I’m thinking like a survivor.”
Same thing, sometimes.
He’s not wrong.
The boss room is at the center of the floor, because of course it is. I recognize the signs by now—the passages widening, the fungal growth getting thicker, the air getting harder to breathe.
I stop at the entrance, preparing my supplies.
Three health poultices, crafted from materials I gathered on Floor 1.
Two doses of antitoxin, improvised from herbs Mariella helped me identify.
The goblin cleaver, cleaned and sharpened.
And a new addition to my arsenal: a makeshift gas mask, assembled from cloth and certain filtered mosses that [Herb Sense] identified as respiratory aids.
You look ridiculous, Johnson says.
“I look prepared.”
Those aren’t mutually exclusive.
I peer into the boss room.
It’s larger than the goblin chief’s chamber—maybe sixty feet across, with a ceiling that disappears into darkness.
The walls are covered in fungal growth so thick it looks like fur, pulsing gently with bioluminescence.
And in the center, rising from a mound of organic matter like a tumor given form, is the Sporomother.
She’s huge. Fifteen feet tall at least, a twisted mass of mushroom flesh and writhing tendrils.
Her “face”—if you can call it that—is a cluster of sensory nodules that swivel constantly, tracking movement in the chamber.
And around her base, half-buried in the fungal mound, are at least a dozen smaller shamblers, dormant but clearly ready to wake at her command.
