CHAPTER 7 — “Drowned Honor” #3

I stand there, swaying, barely conscious, staring at the notification that just changed everything.

Class evolution.

Level 10.

And the mana discharge—the second one, stronger than the first—it felt different this time. Less like an accident. More like a choice.

You’re crying again, Johnson says softly.

I reach up to touch my face. He’s right. Tears mixing with water and blood and sweat.

“I beat him,” I whisper. “He was like Gorath. A wall. Unstoppable. And I beat him.”

You did.

“It doesn’t change anything. Gorath is still out there. Still using my power. Still alive after what he did.”

No. But now you know you can do it. Johnson hops onto my shoulder—gently, carefully, aware of how fragile I am right now. When the time comes. When you face the real Gorath. You’ll know.

I look down at the knight’s body. At the ancient armor, the rusted sword, the helm with my cleaver still embedded in it.

He was someone once. A person with a name, a history, a reason for being here. The dungeon took that from him, turned him into a guardian, a test, a stepping stone.

Just like the world took everything from me.

“I need to sit down,” I say.

Yes. You do.

I find a dry spot—relatively dry, anyway—and collapse against a column. My body is screaming. My mana is depleted. I’ve used two emergency discharges in three floors, and I can feel the cost of it—a hollowness in my chest, an emptiness where power used to be.

But I’m alive.

And I’m Level 10.

And there’s a class evolution waiting for me.

Rest first, Johnson says, settling next to me. The evolution can wait. The loot can wait. Everything can wait until you’re not actively dying.

“Good advice.”

I give that sometimes. When you’re smart enough to listen.

I close my eyes and let the darkness take me.

I wake up to Johnson’s voice in my head.

The water’s receding.

I open my eyes. He’s right—the chamber is draining, the water level dropping steadily. The knight’s body is visible now, sprawled across the throne room floor, no longer submerged.

“The dungeon’s resetting?”

Preparing for the next phase, more likely. You cleared Floor 3. The seal on Floor 4 should be recognizing your signature. A pause. Also, there’s a chest.

“A chest?”

Behind the throne. It wasn’t visible when the room was flooded.

I push myself upright—carefully, every movement sending fresh waves of pain through my body—and make my way to the dais. The throne itself is empty, just dark stone carved with symbols I don’t recognize. But behind it, tucked into an alcove I couldn’t see before…

A chest. Simple wood, reinforced with iron bands, covered in dust that suggests it hasn’t been opened in centuries.

I kneel down, flip the latch, and look inside.

" │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Another grimoire page. Two of them, actually. That makes three total, including the one from Floor 1.

I pull them out, examining them in the dim light of the draining chamber. The handwriting is definitely mine—the same sharp angles, the same abbreviations. And the spell notation…

I can almost read it now. Not fully—my magical sight is still garbage—but better than before. The symbols are starting to make sense, the patterns revealing themselves like an old friend’s face glimpsed through fog.

What does it say? Johnson asks.

“It’s a mana circulation technique. Advanced—way beyond what I can currently use. But if I can piece together the full spell…” I trail off, calculating. “It would accelerate my recovery rate. Significantly.”

How significantly?

“Double, maybe. Possibly more.”

That’s worth the near-death experience, then.

“Worth it? I almost died. Multiple times.”

But you didn’t. And now you have something that will help you not-die in the future. His nose twitches. Net positive.

I can’t argue with that logic.

I pack the loot carefully, retrieve my cleaver from the knight’s helm (which requires more force than I’d like), and make my way toward the exit.

The dungeon feels different now. Lighter, somehow. Like it’s pleased with my progress.

Or maybe that’s just the blood loss talking.

The seal is open.

I can feel it—a shift in the mana flow, a door that was locked now swinging wide. The deep floors are accessible. The vault on Floor 10, with whatever power past me stored there, is within reach.

Not today. Not soon, probably—I’m nowhere near strong enough for what lies below. But the path is clear.

“Johnson.”

Yes?

“I need to evolve my class. Then I need to sleep for about a week. Then I need to figure out what to do about the imperial scouts and Mariella’s secret and Bram wanting to learn combat and everything else.”

That’s a lot of needs.

“Welcome to my life.”

I’ve been here for a while now. Still not impressed.

I start the long walk back to the surface, dripping water and blood and something that might be hope.

Three floors down. Seven to go.

And somewhere out there, five people are about to start feeling very, very tired.

The cottage is dark when I finally stumble through the door, hours later, exhausted beyond words.

Mariella is asleep in her corner. Johnson is already curled up by the hearth. The fire has burned down to embers, casting just enough light to navigate by.

I make it three steps before my legs give out.

The floor is cold. Hard. I don’t care. I lie there, staring at the ceiling, letting my body finally, finally stop.

Class evolution, Johnson says sleepily. You should do that before you pass out.

“Tomorrow.”

It’s already tomorrow. Technically.

“Later tomorrow, then.”

You’re going to forget.

“I’m not going to forget. It’s literally the most important thing I have to do.”

You forgot you built an entire dungeon.

“That’s… a fair point.”

I force myself to focus, pulling up the System interface with the last scraps of willpower I have left.

│└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

I stare at the options.

The first two are predictable—standard evolutions for a healer class, safe paths that would make me better at what I already do. Useful, but limited. The kind of choices someone without ambition would make.

The third is interesting. Combat Alchemist. Weaponized potions. The ability to heal and hurt in equal measure. It’s what I’ve been doing anyway, improvising offensive uses for my crafting skills. Formalizing it would make me more effective.

But the fourth option…

[Arcane Apothecary], Johnson says, suddenly alert. That’s not a standard evolution.

“No. It’s not.”

The System generated it specifically for you. Based on your traits, your history, your potential. His voice is thoughtful. It’s offering you a bridge. A way to reconnect with what you used to be.

I read the description again. Accelerated [Fragmented Soul] recovery. That’s the key phrase. Every other class would let me grow stronger, but this one—this one would help me reclaim what was stolen.
