CHAPTER 10 — “What I Become” #2

When I finally reach the boss chamber—after two more wyrms, a particularly annoying Crystal Golem that took twenty minutes to kill because I kept hitting the wrong resonance, and a section of floor that collapsed under my weight and nearly dropped me into an underground lake—I’m expecting something big.

Something impressive. Something that matches the drama of a floor boss.

What I find is a room.

Just a room. Circular, maybe forty feet across, with walls of pure crystal that catch the light from sources I can’t identify. In the center, hovering about four feet off the ground, is a sphere.

It’s beautiful.

About the size of my head, made of interlocking crystal formations that shift and rotate like a puzzle box solving itself. Colors ripple across its surface—blue and purple and gold—and the sound it makes is almost musical.

A hum. A harmony. A song that resonates in my bones.

No detected weak points. Unknown HP. Unable to calculate survival probability.

The System doesn’t know how to beat it.

Well, Johnson says, and even his mental voice sounds nervous, this is problematic.

“You’ve watched this dungeon for centuries. You never saw anyone fight this thing?”

No one’s reached this floor since I arrived. The seal on Floor 4 kept everyone out. His ears are flat against his skull. I have no data. No patterns. No advice.

“That’s a first.”

I don’t like firsts. Firsts are unpredictable.

I stare at the Core. It stares back—or at least, its constantly shifting surface seems to track my position, the colors pulsing in a way that suggests awareness.

It knows I’m here.

It’s waiting.

“Any chance we can just… walk past it?”

The chamber has one exit. Behind the Core. So no.

“Worth asking.”

I take a step into the room.

The Core’s hum shifts. Becomes deeper. More resonant. The walls start to vibrate, and I feel something building—a pressure in the air, a weight on my shoulders, a sensation like the moment before a thunderstorm breaks.

Then the Core sings.

The sound hits me like a physical blow.

It’s not like the Howl of Dominance from Fenris—that was fear, instinct, animalistic. This is different. This is mathematics. Frequencies designed to interfere with neural function, harmonics that target the specific resonance of human tissue.

My vision blurs. My legs buckle. I drop to one knee, and it’s only years of combat experience that keep me from going all the way down.

Velthar! Johnson’s voice cuts through the noise in my head. You need to interrupt it! The song is the attack—stop the song!

Easier said than done. The Core is hovering in the center of the room, protected by nothing and everything at once. I can barely stand, let alone fight. And the song is getting louder.

I try to activate [Alchemical Synthesis]. The skill flickers, fails. Fifty percent chance of failure, and I rolled badly.

Crystal shards start forming in the air around the Core. Dozens of them, sharp and gleaming, oriented toward me like arrows waiting to be fired.

I have maybe three seconds before they launch.

Think! Johnson screams. You built this place! You know how it works!

I built this place.

The words echo in my head, cutting through the neural static. I built this place. This is my dungeon. My creation. My—

My signature.

The seal on Floor 4 recognized me. The deeper floors opened because they know who I am. And this boss—this beautiful, deadly, impossible Core—was created by someone who thought like me. Designed like me.

Loved elegance like me.

I reach for my mana. Not for a skill, not for an attack. Just raw power, shaped by will alone.

And I speak.

“Override authorization. Architect Velthar. Stand down.”

The room goes silent.

The crystal shards hang in the air, motionless. The Core’s rotation slows, then stops. The colors on its surface shift—blue bleeding into gold bleeding into something that looks almost like surprise.

" │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Reduced mode.

The Core’s hum returns, but softer now. Less aggressive. The crystal shards dissolve back into ambient mana. And when it attacks again—

It’s manageable.

The Resonance Wave that hits me is uncomfortable instead of crippling. The neural disruption fades to a dull headache. I can think again. I can move again.

What did you do? Johnson asks, sounding genuinely shocked.

“I pulled rank.”

You can do that?

“Apparently.”

Why didn’t you do that on the other floors?

“I didn’t know I could until just now.”

You— He stops. Takes what might be a breath. You are the most infuriating person I’ve ever met.

“I get that a lot.”

The Core is still attacking, just less effectively. Crystal shards form and fire, but they’re slower now, easier to dodge. The Resonance Waves come at longer intervals. And the [Summon Constructs] ability?

It creates one golem instead of four.

I can work with this.

The fight takes twenty minutes.

Twenty minutes of careful dodging, strategic attacks, and learning on the fly.

The Core’s [Harmonic Shield] reflects physical attacks, so I can’t just hack at it with my cleaver.

But alchemical attacks work—the resonance bombs I invented earlier are particularly effective, creating frequency interference that disrupts the Core’s structure.

Halfway.

The Core’s attacks are getting more desperate now—the reduced mode apparently has a time limit, and it’s starting to push against its constraints. The shards are flying faster. The Resonance Waves are coming closer together.

And then the unknown ability triggers.

The Core is pulling crystal from the walls, the floor, the ceiling. Streams of glittering material flow toward it, merging with its surface, making it bigger. What was head-sized is now torso-sized, and growing.

That’s not good, Johnson says.

“Very astute.”

Do something!

“Like what?”

I don’t know! You’re the Architect! Architect something!

I watch the Core grow, my mind racing. Physical attacks don’t work. My resonance bombs are effective but too slow—it’s regenerating faster than I can damage it. And I’m running out of mana, out of supplies, out of time.

The Core is going to win.
