Chapter 8 The Call

I slept soundly that night.

I woke naturally the next day, stood on the balcony in the sun, and fried a few simple dishes.

Morning passed quickly.

Mu Jinci still hadn’t returned.

I decided to remind her.

I didn’t want this marriage another second.

I called.

She hung up.

I called again.

She hung up again.

On the third try, she answered and snapped, “Su Yueming, are you annoyed yet?”

I stayed calm. “Are you home?”

She paused, then her tone turned smug. “Missing me after just one night? You practically pushed me out the door yesterday. I thought you’d gone crazy. Turns out you’re just purely Being Jealous.”

I let out a quiet laugh.

She was still so sure of herself.

“What are you laughing at?”

Mu Jinci sounded irritated.

“Nothing. Just thought something you said was kind of funny,” I replied.

“…Su Yueming, do you even hear yourself?”

“Enough with the nonsense. Come home. We have time today. Let’s go to the Civil Affairs Bureau and get the divorce done.”

Silence on the other end.

Finally she spoke. “What did you say? Divorce?”

“Yes.”

Something I said set her off.

She exploded.

“Su Yueming, fine, you’re Being Jealous—I’ll let it slide. But now you’re joking about divorce? Don’t push it!”

Her voice rose higher with every word.

“What’s the point of empty threats? If you’ve got the guts, actually go through with it. Su Yueming, do you dare? We’ve been married five years—can you really let go?”

“There’s nothing to let go,” I said, taking a deep breath. “This marriage should have ended long ago.”
