Chapter 66
SIXTY-SIX
HARLEY
After a drive that felt like forever, we park next to a state-of-the-art private jet, and I shake my head. Sure, all our families have their own, but this is… this seems different.
I don’t waste time getting out of the car and head up the steps to the jet, the others close behind me.
I nod at the stewardess waiting for us and walk through.
The plane is luxurious, and my eyes snag on the engravings on the material of each of the seats.
It looks like a fancy family emblem, with an R in the middle.
Who the fuck is R?
“Whose jet did you say this was?” I murmur, and Cole side eyes me before sighing.
“I text my cousin. It turns out that one of their jets was stored here for some reason, so he sorted everything out for us.”
“And he didn’t ask why?”
Cole’s lips twitch. “He’s not in the business of asking questions, though I’m sure they’ll come eventually.”
“What will you tell him?”
He full on smirks this time, and I feel like I’m missing something. “The truth.”
Yep, definitely missing something.
Lana takes a seat next to Cole, facing me, and Logan sits at the back, his laptop in front of him as he keeps track of Sav. She’s been in the same place now for nearly an hour, but we all agreed to keep an eye on her tracker in case she ends up moving by the time we get to the city.
I’m grateful as fuck to the people with me, since I don’t know what the hell I would do without them.
There’s no way I’d be able to help Sav without these three.
Sure, I can fight if I need to, but they have skills I’m sure I don’t know about.
I think I need to start paying a little more attention to my friends, because today has been one surprise after another.
I spend the first half of the flight pacing, wishing it didn’t take an hour to get to Sav and that I could just be with her. Wishing her father wasn’t such a piece of shit. Wishing a whole lot of shit, really.
Eventually, I get sick of pacing and take a seat in front of Logan.
“Any change?” I ask desperately, though I don’t know what answer I’m hoping for.
If she’s still in the same place, then she’s still trapped and if she’s moved, she’s either gotten herself free, or she’s in even worse trouble than before.
“My answer is the same as the last time you asked me,” he grunts, and I huff out a breath.
Okay, so maybe I’ve been asking him every five minutes, but so what? I’m fucking worried.
“You said you had people waiting for us when we land, who are they?”
Logan’s head slowly lifts from the laptop, and he stares at me, a hard glint in his eyes. He seems to be debating with himself before he finally answers, “Two of my brothers.”
I blink and tilt my head to the side. “You don’t have any brothers.”
His lips quirk the smallest bit, and I’m… well, I’m confused as all hell. “They might not be my blood, but they are my family. My brothers.”
Why is everyone acting so goddamn weird and shady today?
What the fuck have I been missing these past few years?
After what seems like an eternity, we finally land on the tarmac, and I breathe a sigh of relief that we’re one step closer to getting my girl back.
We all stand at the same time, all of us eager to get off the jet and go get Savannah. I follow behind Cole while Lana and Logan trail after us, but just as we’re descending the steps, Cole stops dead in his tracks, leaving me to almost crash into him.
He curses under his breath, and I peer around him, finding four people waiting near two cars just a few steps away from the jet. There’s three men and one woman, all standing casually as they wait.
“What’s wrong?” I mutter to Cole as I eye the people.
“Remember when I said my cousin would ask eventually?”
“Uh huh.”
“Well, it looks like he’s sent his wife and brother to do exactly that.”
Two of the men stand off to the left, and if I had to guess, they’d be Logan’s mysterious brothers, while the other two standing together must be Cole’s cousin and his wife.
Cole starts down the steps, and the two closest to us—Cole’s family—approach. The guy is big and kinda scary looking, wearing a suit and a Cheshire cat grin on his face, while the woman is dressed in black leather pants, a black tank top, leather jacket, and red heels.
The more I look at her, taking in her long blonde hair and indifferent expression, the more she reminds me of Lana. Not that they look too similar, but more that they’re both scary as fuck.
“En—” Cole doesn’t even get to finish whatever he was about to say before he’s wrapped in the guy’s arms.
“You little shit, what the fuck is going on, and why are these two here?” The guy tilts his head toward the two who are now standing and talking to Logan. “They wouldn’t tell us anything. Just what the fuck have you got yourself into?”
While I’m all for family reunions, we’re wasting time when we could be going to get Savannah. “Sorry, but can we please get the fuck going?”
Everyone’s attention snaps to me, but I don’t care. I need to get my girl back.
“Right,” Cole mutters. “This is Enzo and Izzy Romano, and it looks like we just got more people to help…” He takes a step back from who I now know as Enzo and grins. “You don’t mind coming to help us fuck shit up, right?”
Romano…
As in, the Romanos?
Surely not, they’re notorious in this city, known by everyone in the business world because of their investments and their… side businesses.
Is Cole really telling me his cousins are in the Mafia? No, not in the Mafia, are the Mafia.
Jesus fucking Christ, today just keeps getting more and more fucked up. I look at the man who I’ve known my entire life, my best friend, and view him with fresh eyes.
Enzo and Izzy exchange a glance before replying at the same time, “Always.”
Logan and the other two guys approach us, introducing themselves as Damon and Cal.
We give everyone a quick run-down, though it’s clear that Damon and Cal already know what’s going on, Izzy and Enzo do not. They go from looking neutral to downright furious, and I’m glad I’m not the only one.
“Well then,” Izzy speaks for the first time, her eyes trained on me. “Let’s go get your girl back and kill a bunch of assholes, huh?”
Her words should scare me, having to take a life, but they don’t.
How could they, when I know if I don’t take theirs, they’ll no doubt take Savannah’s, and I’ll let that happen over my dead body.
We head to the two cars. Logan, Damon and Cal get into the first one, while I take the one with Enzo, Izzy, Cole, and Lana.
Once we’re seated, Cole leans over to whisper, “Are you sure you’re up for this, Harl?”
I pull back to look him dead in the eyes. “What if it was Lana?”
He eyes me before nodding. Yeah, he knows I don’t have a choice in this, just like he wouldn’t if it was Lana who was in danger.
“So,” Enzo says, looking toward Lana in the rearview mirror as he puts the car into drive. “You must be my new cousin.”
I glance around Cole to look at the girl in question, and she tilts her head. “I don’t think that’s how it works.”
Enzo snorts. “It sure as fuck does in this family.” He gestures towards Izzy, who sits in the passenger seat.
“There’s no in-law in this family. Izzy is my sister.
You’re my little cousin’s girlfriend, which makes you my cousin now too.
Plus, I’ve heard all about you from your boy Cole over there, and I think you’ll fit in perfectly. ”
Cole groans under his breath, and while I’d usually love this type of banter, I can’t enjoy anything right now.
And I won’t until I have Savannah safely in my arms, right where she belongs.
