Chapter 68

SIXTY-EIGHT

HARLEY

The car finally stops, and I look through the window to see Logan and his two brothers getting out of the car. I go to open the door, but Izzy’s voice stops me.

“Wait.” I glance at her, but she’s busy looking up at the building next to us. It’s a high-rise in the middle of the city, where Savannah is being held in her father’s penthouse. “Your girl… is her surname Marks?”

“It is…” I trail off, not knowing what she’s saying.

Her lips quirk into a smile, but it’s not as creepy-looking as Lana’s. “Oh, good, it looks like I have a guy on the inside.”

“You—”

She cuts me off with a wave of her hand. “It’s better if you don’t know,” she says, not taking her eyes off her phone as she types out a message.

I wait impatiently, wanting to get the fuck out of here and to wherever Savannah is, when Izzy’s phone vibrates.

“We need to take the back stairwell. There’ll be less guards if we go that way.”

She’s barely finished her sentence, and I’m jumping out of the car and heading to Logan, who is currently standing and… laughing? with his brothers.

Seriously, did I wake up in the fucking twilight Zone today or something?

It’s only when I get closer that I notice a man standing inside the building, staring at them, and I realize they’re just putting on an act for his benefit.

Thank God, because if Logan was actually laughing and joking around, I might have an actual stroke.

“This way,” I murmur under my breath and tilt my head toward the side of the building.

We reach where the others are waiting, but Enzo is grinning from ear to ear.

“This is great. It’s been far too long since I got to do something exciting. Just make sure no one tells my wife because my angel might actually kill me if she knew I was getting into trouble without telling the family.”

“Why haven’t you told anyone?” Damon asks.

Enzo points toward Cole with a quirked brow. “Because if Luca or Marco knew what this one was getting up to, they’d lose their shit. They’re far too sensible nowadays.”

Izzy snorts. “Oh, please, you just wanna save the chaos for us.”

He elbows her. “Don’t pretend you don’t love this as much as I do, sis.”

Logan clears his throat. “Can we get the fuck going?” he says dryly, and I send up a silent thank you because if this goes on much longer, I’m going to lose my shit.

With his words, all joking stops, and we enter the side door.

I unconsciously check to make sure I still have the two knives Logan gave me before we left the cottage, which of course I do.

He tried giving me a gun as well, but I’ve never shot a gun in my life and would probably do more damage than good with it.

To my surprise though, he didn’t give Lana and Cole anything.

No, it turns out they have their own huge selection of weapons, but don’t even get me started on that.

We head up the stairs, and I immediately spot two guys standing there, guns in hand.

They don’t notice us at first, and before I can even think about what to do, they’re both shot in the middle of the forehead.

I have no idea who the shots came from, I’m just thankful it wasn’t me who had to deal with them.

I can handle myself, sure, but two at once, while I brought knives to a gun fight?

I’d probably end up exactly how they are—dead.

A cackle comes from Enzo, and he starts humming under his breath. Whatever the song is, I have no idea, but I’m beginning to think there’s something not quite right with that guy.

We all charge up the stairs, one flight after another, and by the time we get to the top, I’m panting.

Izzy puts her finger to her lips and points upward, making me look through the gap in the stairwell to see at least eight guards standing around.

Oh fuck.

Damon counts backward from three under his breath before we all charge upstairs, weapons at the ready. Shots go off, and I’m not sure if they’re from our side or theirs, but it turns into more of a fist fight than a gun fight as we all have even numbers.

A man charges toward me, and I pull out my knife, but at the last second, the knife is shot from my hand. Like actually shot from my goddamn hand, the bullet only missing my fingers by an inch or so.

What the fuck?

I look around wildly and see it’s Izzy aiming a gun toward me. My brow furrows, but then I look toward the man and see him taking down someone from his own side.

Ah, that must be her inside guy.

How she has someone on the inside already I don’t know, but it’s clear that whatever the reason started long before she learned about what was happening here today.

I had expected the fight to go on longer, but it’s only moments later the guy I almost stabbed is the only one from their side left standing.

I glance around at the carnage everyone has left, and vomit starts to crawl up my throat when I spot a severed fucking head near my feet.

How in the…?

My head snaps to the others, and I see Enzo grinning at me with a goddamn machete in his hand.

A fucking machete.

Where did he even get that from? Surely, I would have noticed him carrying it when we entered the building? He continues to grin at me like this is the best day of his life, and I have to force myself to stay in place and not take a step back. This dude is creepy as hell.

“Nate,” Izzy says with a grin, pulling my attention from the fucking demon who’s leering at me like I’m his next meal, and the guy—Nate—tilts his head.

Lana steps up next to me, not taking her eyes off Nate, but it isn’t a calculating expression on her face, it’s one of shock. I elbow her discreetly and bend down to whisper in her ear.

“You good?”

She blinks a few times, staring up at me as she slowly comes back to herself and dips her head once.

“I-I’m fine. He just… reminded me of someone. Someone who died a long time ago.”

I frown, but before I can say anything, I hear the others starting to make a plan.

“So we go in, kill everyone but Harley’s girl, and go home?” Enzo asks, and I snort because surely, we need more of a plan than that, but everyone else nods at him.

Well then, I guess maybe not.

“What do you say, Nate? Ready to blow your cover?” Enzo asks, and the guy grins.

“Let’s go fuck shit up.”

We all head up the final flight of stairs, and I hear Lana whisper to Enzo, “Who is that guy?”

Enzo chuckles. “My brother, Luca, is best friends with a guy called Alec and that”—he nods toward Nate—“is Alec’s brother. Why? You better not be thinking of stepping out on our boy. The last time a woman hurt this family, she ended up being shipped far, far away.”

I can almost feel Lana’s eye roll. “He looks familiar, that’s all.”

I don’t know why she’s so keen to find out about this guy, but I’ll worry about that later because right now, all that stands between me and Savannah is a few walls and a few men who are about to find themselves dead.

“Enzo, Nate, Cal, you three come with me to get rid of however many guards are left over. Harley, Cole, Lana, Damon, and Logan go find Harley’s girl. Sound good to everyone?” Izzy says, and we all nod in agreement.

It's time for me to get Savannah back where she belongs.
