BIKAR

Warm weight snuggled against my chest is the first thing that I note as I wake.

We fell asleep in the helm room!

Grimacing at the potential fallout from this, I stifle my sigh.

Heather stops by Bambi's quarters at the beginning of every rotation to harass my mate into having the fast-breaking meal together.

My little doe is not one to face each new rising with a smile; she is more reminiscent of a snarling beast. A quick peek at the ship's log tells me that meal was over and done several human hours ago.

If there is one female I do not wish to land on the bad side of, it is Heather. Though she is human, that does not mean she is incapable of great harm. Bambi is not the only one I researched after logging the human data.

Heather is… complicated, to say the least.

Phasing the tips of my fingers into my chair, I send Heather a brief message, letting her know Bambi is fine and will contact her soon. The response I get is short and succinct.

Thanks for the update, Winged Wanker.

Could be worse. At least she did not threaten me… this time.

Leaning down, I nuzzle my cheek against the silkiness of Bambi’s hair, soaking in the calming balm of her presence.

Her scent is sublime, and I could bask in it all rotation if she would let me.

Ignoring how sore my arse and lower back are, I relish holding my mate.

Who knows how long it will be before she allows such a thing again.

Pulling her closer to me, I smile at the grouchy grumble she lets out while I consider our conversation the night cycle before.

After watching…

That.

We discussed everything and nothing all at once.

Because of how she was raised, my mate was not allowed to enjoy many things.

During the course of our conversation, she regaled me with more tales of Mrs. Cavanaugh, the librarian, the only human who encouraged her to read and educate herself outside the restrictive parameters she dealt with.

However, Bambi also explained to me that she was always too scared to check books out and take them home with her, lest her sire find them and punish her for breaking the rules.

She also feared he would destroy them, and she explained how guilty she would have felt for inadvertently ruining something that did not belong to her.

One other thing she expressed with fondness was that there was another human female, one she calls Miss Ronda, who would slip books into the parcels she picked up from the local thrift shop.

Bambi said it was an unspoken thing between them, and she hid the books under the flooring in her room.

It was a small act of defiance against the strict guidelines she was supposed to adhere to.

My little doe is far braver than she thinks.

Helplessness is not a feeling I have felt often since escaping the Aynar, but the thought of my delicate mate getting caught by her sire for blatantly doing something against the rules… it makes me sick to my stomach.

But… that was then, and this is now.

My mate will never want for anything ever again. Not so long as I am alive and able to fulfill her every need. Bambi shifts in my lap, her rounded arse pressing against my pivvy and screamingly full bladder.

I am not sure which is worse.

The need to relieve myself or the painful erection my mate has caused.

Trying to void with a hard pivvy is nigh impossible, and it is about to exceed my ability to hold. Taking my life into my hands, I try to wake my mate as carefully as possible. “Bambi. Little doe, it is time to wake. The rotation is wasting away while we loiter here.”

I am not sure if it is hearing a male’s voice so close, the sensation of being held, or the disorientation of waking somewhere unfamiliar—maybe a combination of all—but my mate startles awake.

Her head snaps up, the back of her skull making perfect contact with my battered—still healing—face, and I feel something give around the cartilage in my nose.

Groaning low in my throat, I pop the tech leads out of my back and lean away from her flailing limbs.

“Bambi! Calm yourself. There is no harm done. You are safe with me. Always.”

Clarity gathers in her eyes before they widen in alarm. “Oh shit… Bikar, you’re bleeding!”

Feeling wetness on my lip, I reach up and swipe my fingers under my nose.

Lifting my hand, I see the tips are covered in fresh blood, and I roll my eyes at the irony of it all.

My mate has maimed me more in our short acquaintance than any enemy has since the Aynar.

“Yes, that is what happens when another being’s skull makes contact with my nose and partially re-breaks it. ”

I attempt to take the sting out of my dry words with an understanding smile. “You were startled. All is well, but I am afraid I must let you go. If I do not void my bladder soon, I may perish, not to mention the feel of your delectable ass has made my pivvy hard as stone.”

Hot color surges in her cheeks, down her neck, and across her collarbones. “Oh, erm. Yes, I need to, erm, use the bathroom too. But, uh… the other thing…”

Snickering at her discomfort over bodily functions, I stand and lower her to her feet. “Do not forget your tablet.”

Lifting it from the comm console, I hand it to her and smile in bemusement as she utters a hasty thank you before bolting out the door.

Grimacing, I follow her, catching a glimpse of her long, curly hair as she ducks through the entry to her chambers before turning and hurrying to mine.

Swiping a trickle of blood from my lip, I smile while ignoring the slight pang of pain.

Our lives will never be boring; that is a certainty.
