BIKAR

“Bambi. You will come to no harm, I promise.”

Convincing my mate to go flying with me is taking more sweet-talking than I expected.

More even than asking her to enter into double occupancy, which is interesting.

My Bambi, she is not one to try new things with boldness like Slavic’s Ruby, or her Heather Feather…

but she is not as timid as Einar’s Rowan either.

My mate’s temperament is solidly between those females.

She is bubbly, mischievous, sarcastic, lively once she is comfortable around you, and so sweet it makes one’s teeth hurt.

The gods knew what they were about when they made her for me.

I am glad for my brothers and their happiness, but being mated to a female of any other personality…

It would be a disaster.

Flashing my most cajoling smile, I try again. “I have not stretched my wings in many rotations and wish to share this with you. If you will permit it.”

Pretty brown eyes flick back and forth from my face to my wings in rapid succession. “You won’t drop me.”

An indignant scoff escapes before I can stop it. “Never.”

The conviction in my voice is what finally wins her over, even though my reply was not as polite as I intended it to be.

White teeth nibble on her plush lower lip for a tic. “Okay… but you won’t go super high up my first time, right?”

“Not if you do not want me to.”

Her breasts heave with each sharp breath, and I do my best not to get caught ogling her. She has not consented to such liberties yet.

Though I remain hopeful. My mate is exceptionally lovely.

Taking tentative steps towards me, she extends her arms, and I scoop her up before she changes her mind.

Nestling her securely against my chest, I reassuringly nuzzle the top of her head.

Her trust means the worlds to me, and flying with me…

it assuages a want I have longed for. Extending my wings takes little effort, and I do not hide my groan of pleasure when I stretch them out.

“Does keeping them tucked inside you all the time hurt?”

Her question stops me in my tracks. “It is not a painful sensation per se. More like when you have sat in one place for too long or have your legs curled up beneath you. When you stand, you are stiff and stretching feels good.”

“Maybe since we are living on a planet now, instead of a spaceship, you can stretch them more often or maybe leave them out permanently. Everyone knows you have them now, so there’s no reason to keep the slits and spikes on your back covered.

None of your brothers wear shirts, so I can only assume it’s not comfortable for them because of the spiny things y’all have. ”

This female never ceases to amaze me. Vornek gave us residency in a structure that borders the wilderness and lies on the edge of the city complex.

It is a blessing since my brothers and I are…

wilder than most. We are most assuredly less civilized than the other Rukuhks here.

Our current activity reflects that. Flapping my wings to test the air currents, I am pleasantly surprised to feel an updraft in the small clearing next to our domicile.

Taking two running steps, I spread my wings and catch the updraft just as a large gust of wind hits the clearing.

Bambi squeaks and buries her face against me, squeezing her eyes shut.

Raising my voice so she can hear me over the wind, I tighten my arms around her.

“Take a deep inhale and slow your breathing. We are not very high up.”

It takes several tics, but eventually she is brave enough to open her eyes.

I was honest; we are not far from the ground.

Using a human measurement, it would be an estimate of twenty feet.

Coasting back and forth across the open area next to our home does not take much effort.

We do not have to go high and far for our first flight together.

Her consent to try this at all makes me ecstatic.

“Bikar…”

Bambi’s voice quavers and I immediately go to land. “No! I’m okay; this isn’t scary like I thought it would be. This is… this is wonderful.”

Joy permeates my being. “Perhaps you would like to see more of our new home?”

Turning her face up, she beams. “Yes, let’s do that! Fuck flying in an airplane, shuttle, or ship. This right here is the way to do it.”

Angling my wings to catch another air current is as automatic as breathing. If the Aynar can be applauded for anything, they did make our bodies functional instead of misshapen with no practical use. That would have been far worse.

“As my mate wishes.”
