Epilogue Two #2

Cruz looked up, his dark eyes narrowing. "It is three o'clock in the afternoon, Connor."

"I am aware of the time, Cruz," Connor sighed, taking a long drink. He turned around, leaning against the mahogany console, looking at the four parents. "We have an update from the Principal’s office."

Marcy sat up slightly, her brow furrowing in gentle concern. "Is Elise alright? Did she fall?"

"Elise is perfectly fine," Leon said, dropping into a leather armchair, running a hand over his face. "Elise is currently the reigning monarch of the playground. A boy named Timothy, however, is currently receiving intensive psychological counseling."

Kinsley closed her magazine, leaning forward, her chaotic eyes sparking with instant, dangerous interest. "What did Timothy do?"

"Timothy," Connor explained, setting his glass down, "made the critical error of pulling Elise’s hair during the recess transition, and then he allegedly stole her favorite purple crayon."

Kade Lancaster’s frame instantly went rigid. The loving, gentle father evaporated, and the ruthless titan of industry snapped to the surface. "He put his hands on my daughter? I will buy the school. I will have his parents relocated to a different continent."

"Stand down, Kade," Leon laughed, holding up a hand to stall his brother's wrath. "The twins already handled the situation. The threat was neutralized."

Cruz frowned, exchanging a quick look with Kinsley. "Did they hit him? We have explicitly taught them not to use physical violence."

"Oh, no. There was no physical violence," Connor assured them, though his lips were twitching violently with the effort to hold back a grin. "They didn't lay a finger on him. They used... alternative warfare."

"Explain," Kinsley demanded, practically vibrating with curiosity.

Leon cleared his throat, adjusting his posture. "According to the yard duty monitors, when Timothy pulled Elise’s hair, Ethan and Eli did not yell. They did not push him. Instead, they orchestrated a highly coordinated, psychological takedown that would have made a military strategist weep."

"Eli distracted the teacher by claiming he saw a rare coastal hawk near the fence," Connor continued, tagging in seamlessly.

"While the teacher was looking away, Ethan approached Timothy.

Ethan loudly, and with terrifyingly precise vocabulary, informed Timothy that his behavior was a symptom of deep-seated insecurities and a lack of emotional regulation. "

Kinsley slapped her hand over her mouth, a delighted, chaotic squeak escaping her lips.

"But that’s not all," Leon said, his shoulders shaking with silent laughter. "While Ethan was verbally dismantling Timothy’s self-esteem in front of the entire sandbox, Eli flanked him. Eli had apparently hoarded four bottles of liquid glitter glue from the art supply closet. He proceeded to empty all four bottles directly over Timothy’s head, his backpack, and his shoes, while declaring him 'a shiny beacon of poor choices. '"

Cruz buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking uncontrollably. Kade let out a booming, thunderous laugh, completely delighted by the image of his nephews acting as his daughter’s glittering, articulate bodyguards.

"The principal called us in," Connor sighed, attempting to look solemn and failing miserably.

"We had to sit in those tiny, brightly colored plastic chairs while Timothy’s mother shrieked about the glitter.

We had to be incredibly firm, Kade. We had to use our serious voices and tell the principal that we would speak to the boys about appropriate conflict resolution. "

"It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life," Leon confessed. "Because Elise was sitting in the corner, clutching her recovered purple crayon, looking at Ethan and Eli like they were Marvel superheroes. The entire kindergarten class was in hysterics, and Timothy looked like a disco ball."

"I did not teach them that!" Kinsley gasped, though she was laughing so hard tears were streaming down her face. She looked at Cruz, who was wiping a tear of mirth from his own eye. "I explicitly told them to use their words! They used their words!"

"And industrial-grade craft supplies," Cruz pointed out, his voice thick with exasperated pride. He looked at Kinsley, his dark eyes shining with adoration. "They are your sons, Kinsley. They are tactical hurricanes."

Marcy sat perfectly still amidst the uproarious laughter of the men and her soul-sister. A soft, serene smile touched her lips as she poured herself a cup of chamomile tea from the silver pot on the table.

"I think," Marcy murmured melodically, cutting through the noise, "that it is very important we remind the boys that glitter is notoriously difficult to wash out of clothing.

However..." She paused, taking a slow sip of her tea, her dark eyes flashing with a rare, mischievous spark.

"I also think we should order extra dessert for dinner tonight. "

Kade looked at his wife, his heart swelling with an overwhelming, consuming love. He leaned over, pressing a firm, deeply affectionate kiss to her temple.

Down the hallway, the sound of childish laughter echoed from the playroom. Ethan and Eli were arguing loudly over the architectural integrity of a block tower, while Elise’s sweet, calming voice gently mediated the dispute.

The Sanctuary was full. It was loud, it was chaotic, and it was breathtakingly alive.

Cruz reached across the distance between the sofas, his large hand finding Kinsley’s. He intertwined their fingers, anchoring himself to the vibrant, beautiful woman who had rewritten the stars of his universe. She squeezed his hand back, her chaotic eyes bright and at peace.

They had fought through the darkness, survived the venom of their past, and dismantled their own empires to build this fortress on the cliffs.

And as the coastal sun began to set, casting a golden, perfect light over their family, they knew they would never need to fight for their happily ever after again. They were already living inside it.
