Chapter 15 #2

Nate let out a shaky laugh, his grip on her hand tightening as he blinked rapidly. “She’s here,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “She’s here.”

Claire barely had the strength to lift her head, but she watched as Dr. Patel carefully lifted the tiny, squirming baby, wrapping her in a warm blanket before bringing her closer. “She’s perfect,” the doctor murmured, placing the newborn against Claire’s chest.

The moment their daughter touched her skin, everything else melted away. The pain, the exhaustion, the fear—all of it faded as she cradled the tiny, precious life in her arms. Her daughter. Their daughter.

Nate’s hand trembled as he reached out, brushing his fingertips over their baby’s soft cheek. His breath hitched, and Claire turned to see the sheen of tears in his eyes. He was completely undone.

“She’s so beautiful,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

Claire kissed the top of their daughter’s head, tears slipping down her cheeks. “Hi, baby girl,” she murmured, her heart swelling in a way she never thought possible. “We’ve been waiting for you.”

Nate let out a watery chuckle, leaning down to press a kiss to Claire’s lips before resting his forehead against hers. “You did it,” he whispered. “You brought her into the world. I am so, so proud of you.”

Claire closed her eyes, absorbing the warmth of the moment, the love wrapped around her like a cocoon. She had never felt more exhausted, more vulnerable… or more complete.

Their daughter was here. Their family had just grown by one perfect, tiny soul.

And she had never been more in love.

The hospital room felt softer now, the tension of labor replaced with a thick, overwhelming sense of love and relief. Their daughter’s cries had softened into small, hiccupping whimpers as she settled into Claire’s chest, her tiny body warm and delicate against her mother’s heartbeat.

Nate hadn’t moved from his spot beside Claire, his hand still clasped around hers, his other resting gently against their daughter’s back. His thumb brushed over the soft fabric of the hospital blanket wrapped around her, his touch reverent as if he still couldn’t believe she was real.

“She’s perfect,” he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. “Absolutely perfect.”

Claire smiled tiredly, tracing the curve of her daughter’s tiny fingers. “She looks like you,” she murmured, and when she glanced up, she saw Nate blink rapidly, struggling to keep his composure.

“She looks like both of us,” he said, his voice thick. “But I see you in her eyes.”

A knock at the door interrupted them, and when Nate looked up, Leo stood just outside with a nurse, his small hands twisting together in front of him. “Can I come in?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Claire’s heart swelled. “Of course, sweetheart.”

The nurse guided him in carefully, and Nate immediately reached for his son, lifting him up and settling him beside Claire on the bed. Leo’s eyes widened as he caught his first real glimpse of his baby sister, his expression a mix of awe and uncertainty.

“She’s so small,” he whispered, leaning closer.

Claire shifted slightly, allowing Leo to get a better look. “She is,” she agreed softly. “But she’s strong, just like you.”

Leo’s gaze flickered up to Claire’s, something unreadable in his young eyes. Then, slowly, he reached out and lightly touched his sister’s tiny hand. The baby’s fingers curled instinctively around one of his, holding tight. Leo gasped. “She grabbed me!”

Nate let out a soft chuckle, wrapping an arm around Leo’s shoulders. “She already knows you’re her big brother.”

Leo beamed, staring at his sister as though she had just performed magic. “She likes me.”

Claire felt a lump rise in her throat as she watched the moment unfold—the quiet reverence of it, the way Leo’s small fingers remained wrapped in his sister’s tiny grasp. “She loves you,” Claire whispered. “And so do we.”

Nate leaned down, pressing a kiss to the top of Leo’s head. “You’re going to be an amazing big brother, buddy.”

Leo nodded seriously, his gaze never leaving his baby sister. “I’ll protect her. Always.”

Claire reached for Nate’s hand, intertwining their fingers as they both watched their children together for the first time. The moment was so simple, so profound, it made her heart ache in the best way.

Later, after the nurses stepped out and the room was quiet again, Nate helped Claire settle against the pillows, adjusting the blankets around her. Their daughter remained nestled against Claire’s chest, peaceful and content.

Nate stretched out beside them, one arm draped around Claire’s shoulders, the other resting gently on their daughter’s back.

His lips brushed against Claire’s temple, lingering as he breathed her in.

“I didn’t think I could love you more,” he murmured.

“But watching you today… seeing you bring her into the world… Claire, I—”

She turned her head slightly, pressing her lips to his, silencing him with the softness of the kiss. When she pulled away, she rested her forehead against his. “We did this together.”

A small, contented sigh came from their daughter as she shifted slightly in her sleep. Nate ran a slow, careful hand down her tiny back, his expression completely undone. “This is everything,” he whispered. “You. Leo. Her. Us.”

Claire exhaled softly, her body finally relaxing into the safety of Nate’s arms. “It really is.”

And as exhaustion settled in, as sleep pulled her under, she knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together. Because this was their family, their love story, and it was only just beginning.
