Chapter 10. #3

“Benita… I’m not good company right now,” he whispered. The admission cost him something. He hated the sound of his own exhaustion.

“I did not ask you to fuck me, Boss.” Her voice stayed soft, almost amused, but completely serious underneath.

“I asked you to relax. There is a difference.” She kissed him again, just as gently, lingering a fraction longer this time.

“Get some rest. I will always be ready to accept you when you want me. Tonight is not about that. Tonight is about you still being upright in the morning.”

She stayed close, forehead to forehead, one hand still covering his on the keyboard. The other rose and brushed a strand of hair back from his temple with a tenderness that felt almost maternal and entirely sensual at the same time.

Brian exhaled. The fight left him in a slow, reluctant wave.

He nodded once.

Benita stepped back just enough to pick up the glass and place it carefully in his hand.

He stared at the whiskey for a second, then lifted it and drank.

The burn went down smooth and hot, settling in his chest like liquid heat.

It did not erase the anger or the grief sitting under his ribs, but it loosened the worst of the knots.

She waited until he set the empty glass down. Then she reached past him, locked the computer with a few quick keystrokes, and powered the monitors down. The office fell into deeper shadow, lit only by the city lights beyond the glass.

“Come,” she said quietly.

Brian pushed the chair back and stood. His legs felt heavier than they should have.

Benita took his hand as though it were the most natural thing in the world and guided him around the desk.

She did not rush. She simply walked with him, matching his slower pace, her fingers warm and steady around his.

Gloria was waiting in the hallway exactly where Brian expected her to be. She met Benita’s eyes, received a small nod, and fell into silent step several paces behind them. No words. No questions. Just the quiet professionalism that had already become the backbone of Brian’s new life.

They took the private stairs rather than the elevator.

The climb to the hundredth floor was short, but every step seemed to pull more weight from Brian’s shoulders.

Benita never let go of his hand. Her thumb brushed absently across his knuckles as they climbed, a small, continuous reminder that someone was still paying attention to him as a man rather than a title.

The master suite was dark when they entered.

Benita released his hand only long enough to switch on a single low lamp near the sitting area, casting the enormous bedroom in soft amber light.

The bed… king-sized, dressed in dark sheets that probably cost more than Brian’s old monthly rent…

waited like an invitation he had been ignoring for too long.

She turned to him.

“Arms up,” she said gently.

Brian almost smiled at the quiet command.

He lifted his arms. Benita stepped in close and began unbuttoning his shirt with careful, unhurried fingers.

The fabric whispered as she slid it off his shoulders.

She folded it neatly over the back of a nearby chair rather than letting it fall.

Next came the belt. The soft clink of the buckle.

The slow slide of leather through loops.

She knelt without ceremony to remove his shoes and socks, then rose again and worked the button and zipper of his trousers with the same calm competence.

There was nothing rushed or overtly sexual in the way she undressed him. It was care. Pure, deliberate care. When he stood in only his boxers, she did not guide him toward the bed.

Instead she took his hand again.

“Come,” she said softly. “You’re not getting into that bed like this.”

Brian followed without protest. His feet moved almost automatically as she led him across the suite and into the vast marble bathroom.

The space was larger than his entire old apartment, all gleaming stone and soft lighting.

Benita released his hand only long enough to turn the shower controls.

Water began to cascade from the wide rainfall head and the side jets, steam rising almost immediately in the cool air.

While the water warmed, she stepped back and quietly undressed herself.

There was no performance in it. She simply removed the maid’s uniform with the same practical efficiency she had used on his clothes, folding each piece neatly and setting it aside.

When she turned back to him she was completely bare, her body soft and real in the growing steam, but her expression remained calm and focused.

She stepped in close again and hooked her fingers into the waistband of his boxers, sliding them down his legs so he could step free. Then she took his hand once more and guided him under the warm water.

Brian’s eyes drifted half-shut the moment the heat hit his skin. Three days of sitting in the same chair, of barely moving, of living on cold coffee and pure stubbornness, caught up with him all at once. His shoulders sagged. His head tipped forward.

Benita moved behind him first. She lathered a soft cloth with clean-smelling soap and began washing his back in long, steady strokes.

There was nothing teasing or suggestive in her touch…

only thorough, gentle care. She worked over his shoulders, down the line of his spine, across the tight muscles that had been locked for days.

When she finished his back she moved to his arms, lifting each one in turn and washing from shoulder to wrist with quiet patience.

Brian swayed slightly on his feet. She steadied him with one hand against his chest and kept working.

She washed his chest next, the cloth moving in slow circles, then lower across his stomach.

She knelt to wash his legs, one at a time, careful and methodical, never lingering, never turning the moment into anything more than what it was: a woman taking care of a man who had pushed himself past the edge of exhaustion.

When she rose again she guided his head back under the water and washed his hair with gentle fingers, massaging his scalp until some of the tension finally began to ease.

By the time she finished rinsing him clean, Brian was barely upright. His eyes were half-closed. His breathing had slowed. He looked like a man who might fall asleep standing under the water if she let him.

Benita turned the shower off. She stepped out first, grabbed one of the thick towels, and dried him with the same careful attention she had used to wash him…

patting the water from his skin, working from his shoulders down to his feet without hurry.

Only when he was completely dry did she quickly towel herself off as well.

Then she took his hand again and led him, still naked, back into the bedroom.

She pulled the covers down, guided him onto the mattress, and drew the soft sheets up over his clean body. Brian sank into the pillows with a low, exhausted sound. His eyes were already closing.

Benita leaned down and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to his lips.

“Good night, Boss,” she whispered.

Brian’s answer was little more than a tired breath.

She brushed a damp strand of hair back from his forehead, her voice low and steady in the quiet room.

“When you’re ready for more than rest… you already know where to find me. Until then, just sleep.”

She stayed only a moment longer, making sure the covers were settled around him. Then she turned out the lamp, leaving the room in soft darkness, and slipped quietly out the door.

Brian never heard it close.

Sleep took him completely… deep, heavy, and dreamless… for the first time in three days.
