Cybele
The mechanism won’t move. I’ve tried every sequence Seralya and I mapped in the collapsing library, every theory we scratched into crumbling parchment while the mountain groaned around us.
The Heart Chamber pulses like a wounded animal screaming its last breath, while the Wildspont in the far wall has been shrieking at a loud frequency for the past ten minutes.
Zareth stands six feet away, watching me, blood-red eyes burning, hunger naked and absolute. The bond roars through me. Neither of us moves.
The look that passes between us is an answer to something neither of us has the breath left to ask. If we die tonight. His eyes say it. Let it be like this. Mine say it back.
I don't know who moves first.
We meet in the middle, his mouth coming down on mine like a door slamming shut on everything that came before. Clothes fall away in pieces, and I barely track which hands belong to whom because the bond is flooding every point of contact and my thoughts are dissolving at the edges.
His hands drop to my breasts and the sound I make is not dignified. He palms them, thumbs dragging slow and deliberate across my nipples, and when I gasp into his mouth he does it again, harder.
I feel him against my stomach. Hard and thick and already leaking through the fabric between us, the length of him an insistent presence that the bond responds to with a fresh wave of heat that floods straight between my thighs.
He hoists me up like I weigh nothing, lowering us both down onto the pile of his discarded outer armor and my shed jacket, crumpled stone-cold cloth that barely qualifies as a cushion but neither of us cares.
He settles over me, between my thighs, his cock hot-heavy against my belly in an unconscious roll that drags it against my skin and makes me arch.
I am wet. Embarrassingly, thoroughly, entirely wet, arousal a thrumming pulse everywhere he has touched, pooling insistent and aching at my core, and when his hand slides between us and his fingers find me, he lets out a low groan against my collarbone that I feel in my spine.
"Cybele."
He drops his mouth to my throat and nips, each press of his mouth a fraction more deliberate than the last, his fangs grazing the skin with exquisite, torturous care, never quite breaking through.
He is hungry. The blood loss from the battle, the wounds still knitting slowly across his ribs. He needs to feed, and he has been quietly, stubbornly refusing to take from me.
"You need to drink," I breathe.
"No." The word is gravel. A leash on himself. "I won't be able to stop."
I take his face in both hands and make him look at me. His eyes are blown nearly black with want, that crimson slit-pupil gaze unsteady as I have never seen on him before. He looks wrecked. He looks terrified.
"I'm not asking you to stop," I say. "I'm asking you to start."
His breath shudders.
"You don't know what the full bond does—"
"I know exactly what it does, and I want it. I want you. All of it." I tilt my head slowly, deliberately, baring the line of my throat. "Take me."
The sound that tears out of him is not human.
He lines himself up against me and bites down at the exact same moment he thrusts home.
I scream.
The twin-strike of his fangs pierce the curve of my neck and the thick, unyielding fill of him drives inside of me in one deep, claiming thrust simultaneously. My nervous system cannot separate them.
The bite blooms outward in a rush of dark, slithering pleasure, electric and intimate and terrifyingly deep. Inside of me, I feel every inch of him stretching me open, the fullness of it so complete that my vision whites at the edges and my hands scrabble uselessly at his shoulders.
The bond ignites in my chest, and I feel his pleasure hit me like a second body, real and distinct and his, the sensation of being buried inside me layering over my own fullness until I can't tell where I end and he begins.
We are not two things in this moment.
We are one.
He drinks from me, one long, deep gulp that I feel everywhere at once, pleasure lancing outward from the bite in molten waves down my spine, my thighs, the soles of my feet.
The guttural, animal groan he lets out against my neck vibrates through his chest and into mine, and then his hips drag back to the very tip of him and slam back in.
I whimper. My mind empties of everything except the thick, throbbing presence of him, the impossible depth of that thrust, the way I feel it settle somewhere behind my navel like a physical claim.
He does not slow down.
His pace is not mercy. It is not gentle.
It is fast and hard and claiming, every thrust rolling his hips to drive as deep as he can go, the slap of his body against mine echoing off the carved walls of the Heart Chamber.
He draws blood from my neck, drinking, groaning against my skin, his whole body shuddering at the taste of me.
I feel his wounds seal beneath my hands as I grip his back, torn skin knitting closed, old bruises fading, the blood running through him and remaking him.
I arch off the stone and it doesn't feel like floor anymore. It feels like floating.
My legs curl up over his back on instinct, heels pressing into him, urging him deeper though there is nowhere left to go. My hands are jello-limp around his neck. My mind has one word left in it and it says Zareth, Zareth, Zareth in rhythm with each thrust.
The metallic tang of the Wildspont fills the air around us.
The stone vibrates in long, building waves beneath the discarded cloth we lie on, and I feel the mountain's distress the way you feel a thunderstorm.
In my chest, in my blood. But beneath that, between each roll of the tremors, there is a new sound beginning. Not screaming.
Breathing.
With every slow drag of him pulling back, the mechanism behind us seems to inhale, carved grooves flickering with the faintest thread of amber light. With every deep, mind-erasing thrust back in, it exhales. Light pulsing stronger, steadier, reaching further along the ancient channels in the stone.
"Zareth." My voice breaks on his name.
He answers by driving deeper, every ridge and vein of him dragging against the place inside me that has stars detonating behind my eyes, so hard I cry out.
The pressure inside me winds tighter and higher and harder.
His cock fills me completely, stretching me to the edge of too much, perfectly, permanently too much.
The bond is a living thing between us now, pulsing in rhythm with our heartbeats, and beneath mine, I feel his pleasure building through it.
His. A pressure behind my ribs that isn't mine, enormous and mounting, older and darker than anything I've ever felt, and it stacks on top of my own until the combined weight of it is something I cannot hold.
"I can feel you," I gasp. "I can — Zareth, I feel everything—"
He groans against my throat, fangs still sunk deep, his hips losing the last of their pace, pushing harder, urgent, his massive body quacking above me, the control he is famous for gone, dissolved entirely into something raw and singular and mine.
The mechanism blazes. Every carved line running with light now, amber bleeding crimson bleeding gold, and I understand in a distant flash of clarity that splits through the pleasure.
This is it. This is what was missing.
Not a key. Not a ritual. Us. My surface-born warmth and his ancient underground dark, wound together by something older than either civilization, the bond completing a circuit that neither world could close alone.
The realization crests the same moment everything else does.
We shatter together.
The climax rips through me in a wave that has no edge, pleasure beyond sensation, beyond thought, my body seizing and arching completely off the floor, his name a broken sound in my throat, every nerve I have firing at once.
Through the bond I feel him follow me over, feel the enormous, rolling shudder of his release, the hoarse moan tearing out of him as he spills deep inside me, his hips stuttering in hard, helpless pulses.
He fills me up with his cum, a sensation of pure warmth flooding my stomach, until I am nothing but light and feeling and him.
The shockwave rolls outward from where our bodies are joined.
It hits the mechanism like a detonation.
The Heart Chamber flares, blinding, total, a white-gold supernova that burns away everything violet in an instant. The Wildspont's shriek climbs to a single, furious, final ear-spliting pitch, and then…
Silence.
The jagged rift stitches closed. Thread by thread, those crimson-amber lines of shared light suturing that ancient wound shut, each pass of light pulling the dark edges together until there is nothing left but smooth, sealed stone.
Violet corruption curls back from the chamber walls like parchment in a fire, dissolving into grey ash that drifts soundlessly to the floor. The tremors rolling beneath us settle in one great held breath released, and then the mountain goes completely quiet.
Steady.
Alive.
Zareth's fangs withdraw from my neck.
I feel the careful pull of them, the press of his tongue sealing the wound, the thin trail of blood he cannot quite catch curving down toward my collarbone.
He is heavy above me and trembling slightly, his whole body wracked with the aftermath of what just moved through us both. Inside me, he softens slowly, still twitching with small, involuntary pulses, like his body is still trying to process the fact that the world rearranged itself around him.
My lungs work in shallow, ragged pulls. My heartbeat is enormous in my ears, Zareth’s beating the same erratic speed against mine, two rhythms settling into one.
The bond between us has shifted into something new.
Entirely synchronised with his. Permanent in a way that no amount of distance will ever undo.
Zareth lifts his head, crimson eyes are soft, I have never seen them this open. Undone.
I reach up and touch his face. My hands are still shaking.
"We're alive," I say. It comes out wondering. Like I'm still deciding if I believe it.
He turns his mouth against my palm.
"We're alive," he affirms.
My eyes fall closed. The mountain breathing beneath us, slow and healthy and whole. The Wildspont is closed, the corruption dying in the dark somewhere above us, crumbling to ash in tunnels it spent centuries poisoning.
We didn't just survive. We changed the fundamental magic of the world.
