Chapter 13

MADDOX

Joslyn disappeared up the stairs, and I turned to Ronan. “Don’t do anything stupid. You can’t risk Charlotte by trying to be a hero.”

“I know ’ow to do my job, Maddox,” Ronan snapped.

“I know you do, Ronan. I just don’t want to see you risking everything to prove something.”

I heard a large vehicle pull up in front of the house, and I opened the door. The local team I called in had shown up. It was time for Ronan to leave. He looked up the staircase, and I could tell he was debating whether to go up there to tell her goodbye or not.

“The more time you waste, the less likely you are to be the hero.”

I was trying to tip the scales. It worked; he gave me a pissed off look, and out the door he went.

I walked away from the door and heard Joslyn upstairs.

It sounded as though she was crying. I kind of knew what it felt like to have a whole new life just chosen for you.

She had a choice; at least that is what everyone was telling her.

From her demeanor and actions, she didn’t think there was a choice at all.

I climbed the stairs, and as I drew closer to her bedroom door, I could hear her sobbing.
