Chapter 19
I opened the door and let Ronan into the room. We sat down on the couch, and I turned to look at him.
“It’s not your fault that you couldn’t get her back, and I understand that.”
“I’m really sorry about Charlotte. Vampires can be persuasive, and ’er being enamored by ’im is probably part of ’is plan.”
“To try to get to me,” I added quietly. “Can you tell me what he even wants with me? What purpose would I serve him?”
“Well, ye are in a position of power and new to de position at dat. Ye are learning as ye go, and dat could be beneficial to ’im.”
“Has anyone in a position of power within the organization ever sat down and spoke with him? Did anyone get his version of what happened, or are we just believing other people? Also, who are those people, and were they present?”
“No. No. Yes. Scott. And yes.”
“Then I need to talk to Scott,” I said.
“Would ye like me to get in touch wit ’im? He actually lives in Michigan, too.”
“Yes, I would like you to get in touch with him and let him know that I am coming to speak with him. I would appreciate his candor when I get there. I also need to speak with Maddox. I want him to contact Alexander. I want to meet with him and get his side of the story as well. Maddox should be able to feel him out for me and tell me what the situation is going to call for.”
“I don’t tink dat’s a good idea at all. Why would ye think dat meeting wit Alexander would be a good idea? I don’t see any of it ending well.”
“Respectfully, I didn’t ask you what you thought about it. This,” I said, motioning to the space between us, “isn’t working. You keep letting your feelings get in the way of your job. I am your boss. I didn’t ask what you thought about it. I simply told you what to do.”
“Ye can believe dat, but dat’s not what I’m doing. I am trying to give ye sound advice. Go talk to Maddox and see what ’e tinks about it,” he said.
“I fully intend to. Now pick up your phone and call Scott. I will be back shortly.” I left the room and walked down the hall. I pulled my phone from my pocket and texted Maddox.
