As we board the plane to Italy, I can't help but reflect on how close I came to losing everything.
Six months ago, I was a man who didn't appreciate what he had. Who took his wife for granted. Who let his best friend manipulate him into betraying the woman he loved.
But I'm not that man anymore.
I'm a man who knows how lucky he is. Who cherishes his wife. Who would do anything to make her happy.
Susanna falls asleep on my shoulder during the flight, and I watch her, marveling at the fact that she's still here. That she chose to forgive me, to give me another chance.
I'll never take that for granted again.
When we land in Rome, we're both exhausted but excited. We check into our hotel—a beautiful boutique place near the Spanish Steps—and collapse onto the bed.
"This is amazing," Susanna says, looking around at the elegant room.
"You're amazing."
She rolls her eyes, but she's smiling. "Cheesy."
"True."
I pull her into my arms and kiss her. "Thank you for being here with me. For giving us another chance."
"Thank you for being worth it."
We make love slowly, savoring each other. The sex is different now than it was six months ago. It's not desperate or frantic. It's confident, secure. We know we have all the time in the world.
Afterward, we lie tangled together, watching the sun set over Rome through the window.
"I'm happy," Susanna says softly. "Really, truly happy."
"Me too, baby. Me too."
And I am. For the first time in a long time, I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be.
With the woman I love, building the life we both deserve.
